Are you expecting a Christmas bonus?

YABU - No bonus for me!
YANBU - Of course!

If you do - how much?

I've worked many, many many many jobs and never once received a Christmas bonus, so I have no frame of reference!
I've been to a few limp Christmas dos, however, but (as an antisocial goit) I think I'd have rather had the cash!

(I'm starting a new business, which will be recruiting from 1st Jan and am wondering how much I need to budget in for Christmas bonuses, as I've seen them mentioned on here quite a bit and it seems like quite a lot of people really benefit from them.)

Pointless thread OP - I’ve worked where I’ve had 0, 10% of salary and £100.

It depends on the culture and the type of business.

Much better to pay people fairly, give decent benefits and a good amount of Christmas leave imho.

We get the three days between Xmas and new year as additional ‘free’ leave and I’d rather have that than the £600 ish equivalent.

I get an annual bonus, but not at Christmas time. The cash element is up to 20% salary but linked to my own & the company's performance, and the reality is its rarely more than 10% and in recent years more like 6-7%.
There is also a deferred share bonus element, this would be expected to be equivalent to around 10% but the last few years it's been less, I got about 8% last year. That one is less reliable though - what I got last year has already declined in value and is locked in for another 2 years.

Nothing, not even a Christmas meal. It's retail though so what do you expect? Husband doesn't get a bonus either but they do get a meal out and usually a gift of alcohol from their manager.

TheKeatingFive · 16/11/2021 09:48

At Christmas we normally get €500 gift card, couple of bottles of wine, hamper and a print commissioned by my company.

We also get a paid for Christmas party and overnight stay in a fancy hotel/spa place.

Great as all of that is (and they are truly lovely perks), a direct benefit pension would be infinitely more valuable in the longer term.

Nhs worker, we don't get bonuses and have to pay for and organise our own Christmas do if we bother to have one

stuffnthings · 16/11/2021 10:16

Multinational conglomerate with multiple areas of business. No bonus, just a thank you email. There is a team organised and self pay Xmas lunch.

LemonKitten · 16/11/2021 10:23

I'm self employed so no bonus (and no pay for days off either but hey ho!) but my partner is expecting a bonus of around £3k this year, think it's between 0.25% and 0.5% depending on company meeting / exceeding targets - no-one at his company got any bonus last year).

Healthcare not in the UK. I get a 13th month's salary in November. Due to tax I get less than half that net obviously - but still, thats what my employer pays.

DH actually gets it too in a technical profession but a regulated salary type - its fairly common here for people in industries which follow collective wage agreements. I'm not sure there's a UK equivalent.

MissAmbrosia · 16/11/2021 10:52

I'm abroad and also get a 13th month in November and a bonus based on company's performance in March. We also get 85% of a month's pay in May as double holiday pay.

HarrietsChariot · 16/11/2021 11:32

Never had a Christmas bonus. Have usually had a shit Christmas do - sometimes a very extravagent shit Christmas do - and from time to time got a Christmas hamper or gift card (20-40 quid). I genuinely don't know anyone who regularly gets a Christmas bonus from their employer.

weegiemum · 16/11/2021 17:38

I will get £10 from the government on my PIP.

Dh is the boss (GP) so no for him, but he will give all his staff a bonus (I'm not sure how much).

We pay our cleaners an extra weeks salary as a Christmas bonus. They make my life SO much easier, it's worth it!

gwenneh · 16/11/2021 17:45

Yes, we usually get a Christmas bonus (equal to 1 month salary) in the next two weeks or so, and then we get a profit sharing bonus at the end of the financial year.

Planning on having new flooring fitted through the whole house this year -- cannot wait!

weegiemum · 16/11/2021 17:50

Dh also pays for 5he Christmas night out (food plus all drinks until he leaves - puts all the wine on the table for the meal) and he also gave his staff (receptionists, healthcare assistants, dispenser, nurse) a bonus out of the money he made from COVID jags earlier this year.

I've noticed some of you saying no bonus as NHS. If you work in a GP practice, it's because the doctors say no!
