Are you expecting a Christmas bonus?

YABU - No bonus for me!
YANBU - Of course!

If you do - how much?

I've worked many, many many many jobs and never once received a Christmas bonus, so I have no frame of reference!
I've been to a few limp Christmas dos, however, but (as an antisocial goit) I think I'd have rather had the cash!

(I'm starting a new business, which will be recruiting from 1st Jan and am wondering how much I need to budget in for Christmas bonuses, as I've seen them mentioned on here quite a bit and it seems like quite a lot of people really benefit from them.)

I don’t get a Christmas bonus. I got one with a previous employer, it was a voucher for €250, but that was about 15 years ago. We do normally have a lovely Christmas party though, and last year when it couldn’t happen we got sent a nice hamper with a couple of bottles of wine, chocolate etc.

Mandofan · 14/11/2021 18:25

Yup, should be 10% so £6,000 (before tax) DP is in a similar field but doesn’t get one unfortunately

Sherrystrull · 14/11/2021 18:25

Teacher. So no.

ToManderleyAgain · 14/11/2021 18:27

We get a Christmas party and a generous bonus (not salary dependent, everyone gets the same). I’ve not experienced anything so generous anywhere else, but it’s one of those things that makes me pleased to work where I do, and makes us all feel valued Smile

DriftingBlue · 14/11/2021 18:32

I work for a non-profit. Bonuses do not exist.

Dh’s bonus is tied to the fiscal year. Honestly, we both hate the bonus system. It’s just an excuse for the company to hold back a portion of salary at a whim. In theory the bonus in his field should be an extra 20% of gross and it should always be paid unless the person gets a negative review. Yet there is always some excuse as to why they can’t pay full bonuses or any bonuses.

ivfbabymomma1 · 14/11/2021 18:34

I work for a really small business. There's about 9 of us including owner, he gives us all around £200 a few days before Xmas. But that's not to be expected it's just how generous he's feeling. Last year we got £200! I think the year before we got £100. Hoping for another £200 this year which goes straight on our Xmas food shopping lol

BarbaraofSeville · 14/11/2021 18:34

Complete how long is a piece of string question as you have people who've never received a single penny right through to those who expect tens of thousands of pounds.

My employer buys us all fish and chips, but only the light bite lunchtime offer so about £6 each.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/11/2021 18:36

DP is self employed so doesn't get anything except the client he does the most work for sends him a bottle of home made sloe gin, which I drink because he doesn't like it.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 14/11/2021 18:38

@Pumpkinsonparade

Self employed so no bonus!! Do get gifts though off my customers!!
Yup this ^
spanieleyes · 14/11/2021 18:39

Teacher, so no.
But a member of staff, whose husband is a farmer, brings us all in a stalk of sprouts!

Seafog · 14/11/2021 18:41

At my current job I don't receive a cash bonus from my employer, but I do get abundant tips and gifts from regular customers that come to our store.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 14/11/2021 18:41

I wish
I'm a teacher 🙂

Rainbowsew · 14/11/2021 18:43

In the NHS! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

holidaynearlyover · 14/11/2021 18:47

@Mammyloveswine

I'm A teacher.. we don't even get a drink at the Christmas do (we pay for ourselves)
I'm guessing my bonus will be covid this year 🤣
emmathedilemma · 14/11/2021 18:47

Private sector but no, we usually get a "gift" from the company (too much chocolate or a food hamper type thing) and there's £30pp towards a Xmas "do", although in reality someone uses puts a credit card behind the bar to pick up the drinks bill as well.

gabsdot45 · 14/11/2021 18:48

I'm going to get a Lidl voucher for 30 euro.

RandomDent · 14/11/2021 18:48

Not a sausage now I’m in public service. But I used to work retail for a holiday job (an Indy, not a chain) and would get an extra £100 Christmas week. We were very busy at Christmas though!

LittleOwl153 · 14/11/2021 18:49

I think it also depends on what kind if wages you are planning in paying staff. If your staff are likely to be paid in the region of claiming Universal Credit (for thise claiming rent and childcare this can be higher than you think) they'd probably prefer a gift or Christmas meal than a bonus which throws out their claim and they will loose 55% of whatever extra is paid in January anyway which is another headache!

MrsMcCluskeysCat · 14/11/2021 18:50

We got one last year because we couldn't have a Xmas party it was 1.5%. Not sure if we will get one again this year, we aren't having a Xmas party so will have to see.

happytoday73 · 14/11/2021 18:50

No bonus, hamper, Christmas do etc... Private sector...
My boss might buy me a bottle of wine.. I will buy a gift for my staff

DixiePeach · 14/11/2021 18:50

First time ever as a thank you for our work over last18 months £1k (pro rate) higher education staff.

ChimChimeny · 14/11/2021 18:53

Ours isn't a Christmas bonus but the annual company bonus, based on personal and company performance. I'm getting 5% which I was VERY surprised about (and very pleased obvs) apparently we had a good year!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 14/11/2021 18:53

Local Authority worker here so obviously no bonus and we have to (quite rightly) pay for our own Christmas meal.

BitterTits · 14/11/2021 18:55

I'm a teacher too. No bonus (in fact a real-terms pay cut). We get a very modest lunch once a year in September - and I mean a small portion of canteen curry and rice and a bit of crumble. That's the only perk. This wasn't the case when I started 20 years ago when we had a buffet to celebrate the end of the year, a breakfast at the beginning and a catered training day at a conference centre. As for a monetary bonus, no freaking way.

Peace43 · 14/11/2021 18:57

I work for a big company. Bonuses are 1Q if they come. No bonuses at Xmas.
