Are you expecting a Christmas bonus?

YABU - No bonus for me!
YANBU - Of course!

If you do - how much?

I've worked many, many many many jobs and never once received a Christmas bonus, so I have no frame of reference!
I've been to a few limp Christmas dos, however, but (as an antisocial goit) I think I'd have rather had the cash!

(I'm starting a new business, which will be recruiting from 1st Jan and am wondering how much I need to budget in for Christmas bonuses, as I've seen them mentioned on here quite a bit and it seems like quite a lot of people really benefit from them.)

OP posts:

3 weeks off work, £400 this year and usually a box of nice biscuits.
But I am retiring 2nd week of January and then off on a luxury long haul holiday with dp so the best bonus ever.

Littlemissmagnet · 14/11/2021 21:31

@gaslady14

Lol I work for the NHS. I don't even get a payrise for working Xmas day!
Lol same! Christmas day is a normal working day! ALSO we get pay cuts and they still manage to dress it up as as a pay rise and call us lazy if we complain! Bonus 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 however I still love the NHS. The People who work for it are NOT in it for the £££ and their good nature is quite often taken advantage of.
Onionbhajisandwich · 14/11/2021 21:32

I usually get about £200. DH usually gets between 1k and 2k. Not sure either of us would “expect” it though. It’s nice when we get them but I wouldn’t be pissed off if we didn’t.

Porfre · 14/11/2021 21:33

About £50. And usually £30 gift vouchers.

Berkeys · 14/11/2021 21:34

@Rumplestrumpet

Civil servant here, never had a Christmas bonus in 15+ years. And we have to pay for our own Xmas party - not a penny from our employer (you tax payers!)

Specifically a Christmas bonus, no, but we do get a bonus at the end of the financial year which is about 10% of our salary. We do usually get some sort of hamper/gift at Christmas though.

DP just got his annual bonus a few weeks ago which was a few thousand and will get vouchers at Christmas.

Both private sector tech companies.

Porfre · 14/11/2021 21:36

Boss also pays for everyone to have a meal at one of those posh hotels. They usually do Christmas meals for different companies

SpikeDearheart · 14/11/2021 21:40

I don't 'expect' one as such - I have had one the last few years but it depends on how the business is doing so it would be foolish to expect it. As you were asking, last year it was £500, which is a bit under 1% of my gross annual salary.

FawnFrenchieMum · 14/11/2021 21:40

Me no, but always had an annual bonus based on company profits and personal performance. DH yes, usually gets £150-£250 in the building trade. That would be approx 1.5-2.5 days pay

KatherineJaneway · 14/11/2021 21:41

Public sector here so no chance

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 14/11/2021 21:45

Not a Xmas bonus no, last year we got a £50 Amazon voucher instead of a Xmas do. We do have the possibility of an annual bonus at end of financial year though which is up to 20% annual salary dependant on company and own performance.

Pjparty · 14/11/2021 21:45

No Christmas bonus but one in January which is approx 40% gross annual salary- in financial services it is more normal to get a bonus than not

BonnesVacances · 14/11/2021 21:48

I WFH 8 hours a week and my boss sent me a Selfridges hamper last year.

AutumnLeaves21 · 14/11/2021 21:50

Ha! Another nhs worker here, absolutely not.
I got a lip balm and a cupcake for working the COVID pandemic though. Makes it all worthwhile Grin

TreeLawney · 14/11/2021 21:54

Another public sector worker so no. Also fund our own Christmas do + tea, coffee etc through the year. Gold plated pensions though 😉

TractorAndHeadphones · 14/11/2021 22:08

Large corporate here, no Christmas bonus but a budget for a christmas do (usually between £30 - £50 per head). Our salary a week early (10 days before Christmas)
We get a bonus at the end of the financial year though usually at least a month's salary

CasperGutman · 14/11/2021 22:11

Public sector, so no megabucks bonuses here. That said, my manager has a small budget for discretionary performance bonuses, and tends to find some reason to give out small sums (maybe £50 sort of level) on the day of the team Christmas meal. Along with an afternoon off, it makes for a pleasant celebration of the festive season but I won't be buying a new car with it!

TractorAndHeadphones · 14/11/2021 22:11

Also adding - Xmas eve is unofficially a half day. When we used to be in the office everyone got a subsidised breakfast from the on-site canteen (a few quid for a full English!) so all we did was come in, eat and go home. One year we spent the whole morning watching christmas videos made by various teams
im not complaining

RoseMartha · 14/11/2021 22:12

No. We get nothing at Christmas. No party, no token gift, no card. Nothing.

Bloodypunkrockers · 14/11/2021 22:18

Another public service here

What's a bonus?
What's a Christmas party?

We might go out for lunch but we have to use flexi and pay for it ourselves

HellsAngel81 · 14/11/2021 23:40

Vet Nurse so no!!!! Will likely get fat from all the chocolates that our lovely clients bring in instead Grin

AmyDeirdre · 15/11/2021 00:23

Job 1. Gift (e.g. smellies) plus cash in a card (it was grossed up through payroll), given at a company meal in a restaurant after work. This was really nice, small owner run company but felt like they made an effort and cared. It was a generous cash gift too...maybe 1 week's pay if I remember right.
Job 2. Generic gift card, about 1/3 week's pay.
Job 3. Nothing
Job 4. Company gift card, about 1/3 week's pay. Subsidised optional Christmas party

Good to plan ahead, OP. The only thing I would say is that it would be bad to reduce it, e.g. to give 1 week's pay the first year, then as the company grows, find you can only afford 1/2 week's pay the 2nd year. Increasing it year on year won't be an issue, on the other hand!

Also, it's very industry dependent, as pp show. Not paying a bonus/paying only a small bonus would be less acceptable in some industries.

LuaDipa · 15/11/2021 05:50

Nope. Our bonuses are quarterly and performance related.

Draggondragon · 15/11/2021 05:53

Yes I will get about 10k tax free plus a month's salary in the gratuity account which is paid when I leave. But I live abroad and don't have any pension.

Nyxly · 15/11/2021 05:57

I do but it's the first job I have done. 10% of my annual salary raising to 15% if my teams perform very well. I have several teams which is why I can earn an extra 5 where other people only get an extra 3%.

However, due to the pandemic everyone got 10% last year, regardless of performance. This year the company has out performed expectations so its standard of 12% with the possibilities of an extra 5% for me.
