How often do you deep clean your house all the way through?

Firstly, AIBU to be totally fed up of cleaning?!
My house is not a tip (I don't think!) but I have just spent 2 whole days cleaning it from top to bottom and it's still not finished. Twice a year I usually deep clean all the way through- things such as touch up paint, clean rugs/sofa/carpet with a professional carpet cleaner, scrub the whites around the windows, pull beds/furniture out and clean behind. I also spent at least an hour cleaning every day without the bigger jobs such as changing beds, cleaning blinds/windows etc. It honestly feels like a complete never ending task. Me and DH have been cleaning for the last two days in preparation for Christmas (last bit of annual leave before we put our tree up). I really wish I had a cleaner.

…. Also, a couple of large plastic boxes tucked away. Anything left lying around is put in there, so if they can’t find anything they know where to look. I have always refused to put stuff away for them, because they don’t learn that way!

Ickle37 · 13/11/2021 09:25

I dont even know what that means. Do you get a wet cloth and wipe everything? What does ' deep clean' mean?? Never.

Lanique · 13/11/2021 09:32

I have cleaners that come in EOW and do about 10-12 hours pcm on the house. Because they only come twice a month they can do a deeper clean in those hours than if they were spread over four times a month. They clean the kitchen, utility, bathrooms, bedrooms and study. They dust, hoover and mop. This includes getting behind some but not all of the furniture.

The weeks in between I'll do a surface clean which involves cleaning the kitchen, utility and bathrooms, hoovering and mopping.

In terms of deep cleaning which to me includes all skirtings and woodwork, windows, fridges, inside cupboards, rugs etc - probably once a year and never in one swoop, just as and when.

God I sound boring.

Crumblinginside · 13/11/2021 13:36

Ickle it means pulling sofas out.
Cleaning / dusting eg not just a hoover but lights.
Defrosting the freezer. Cleaning the oven.
All that stuff Grin

NadiaVulvokov · 13/11/2021 13:37

Never.

Life’s too short to stuff a mushroom as they say.

Cornishclio · 13/11/2021 13:46

Every so often (maybe once or twice a year) I will do one of the main rooms like pull the bed or sofa out to hoover behind or van carpet, wash down paintwork. Not all on the same day though. Unless you have a lot of pets or clutter or a messy family I would say an hour a day for everything is enough. I will hoover a few times a week, dust or wipe down surfaces once a week, clean bathroom and kitchen thoroughly a few times a week and cursory wipe downs if needed in between. Unload dishwasher, laundry and beds but only two of us plus grandchildren one day a week.

I have live-in cleaners who work as a tag team.

We had a good go during the monotony of Lockdown.
That'll probably do us until the next pandemic.

Kdubs1981 · 14/11/2021 18:55

@IVFdreams2021

I clean for about 6 hours on a Saturday or Sunday once a week.
6 hours?!!!!!
YukoandHiro · 14/11/2021 19:02

The thing about a cleaner (I have one) is that they don't do any of this deep clean stuff. It's very surface. I pay a cleaner as I don't have time to keep it clean enough myself due to working and DDs and endless other commitments but it means it's never done properly and occasionally is so grotty i'm embarrassed

MrsToothyBitch · 15/11/2021 10:07

@YukoandHiro this is where I struggle too- I'm not a bad cleaner, but things like the cupboards and fridge cleans are the reason I want help. I can do basics, I want my deeper cleaning done so we don't have to find the time for it.

CommanderBurnham · 15/11/2021 15:03

@MrsToothyBitch and @YukoandHiro I so understand this.
I used to have a deep clean once a month (7hours) it was amazing but required a good few hours of tidying beforehand.

I moved to 2 deep cleans a month (31/2hours), alternating upstairs and downstairs.

It works really well. They do the back of toilet cisterns, light fittings, skirts etc. If you get a duo then you can reasonably expect them to move furniture and clean too.

MrsToothyBitch · 15/11/2021 16:25

@CommanderBurnham I've seen a good company locally so I might see what they can do!

appleturnovers · 15/11/2021 16:49

Once every 2 or 3 years...

It used to be never, but I got sick of cleaning flats top to bottom when I was about to move out of them, to get the deposit back, and realising they were cleaner on the day I moved out than they had ever been all the while I was living there. So I made a resolution to occasionally clean the house I'm currently living in as though I'm moving out and want my deposit back! Still don't get round to it that often though.

The house is cleaned from top to bottom once a week (4 stories).

General cleaning is every day.

By you?

And what does that entail?
Skirting boards?
Tops of wardrobes?
Behind beds?
Lampshades?
Pulling our kitchen appliances?

We've just been discussing this cleaning obsession because that's what it is. We're going to try and relax a little. We both do it, yesterday we spent all day reorganizing and cleaning, glass out of oven doors, shelves out of the fridge, pulling the beds out, etc, etc. Over a 4 story cottage. We both just take a floor each and work down or up, she's better at the kitchen than me. Music on, clean away or she'll have a friend on loudspeaker or her mum on the phone. Then even for just a few hrs, the house is in showroom condition, it's therapeutic. Because we clean every day it ends up just being maintenance. We cannot cope with either clutter or mess. Then we both went managed to find time for an hr on the cross-trainer.

I'll die on the steps with a vac in my hand.Halloween Grin

Effectively your hobby is. Leaning. Ok, suppose we’re all different.

Cleaning (must be the shock)

It does seem a bit weird, but, we've both agreed to try to work on not being so uptight about it. I must fluff the sofa cushions 3 times a day. I can see the second sofa's cushions are a little deflated. The windows are being replaced on Friday so mess alert.

Although this weekend we're out in Harrogate day and night so we're going to skip a week.

speakout · 15/11/2021 18:54

I can't imagine taking the glass out of oven doors to clean every week.
How dirty do they get?

Evangeli · 15/11/2021 19:00

I only heard of the phrase "deep clean" here on mumsnet. I had no idea it was a thing.

has anyone here read the book "the Women's Room" by Marilyn French? it was one of my - perhaps THE- wake-up books. There's a whole section devoted to describing the heroine's cleaning system- she has a complex filing system with each cleaning task (curtains, shelves, crystals etc) set down on a filing card, with the appropriate timelapse, and she has the cards in a filing drawer, and she moves each card to the back of the drawer once it is done, and then the next card/task comes up at the appropriate interval.

It left a great impression on me and this thread is reminding me of that book.

RedHot22 · 15/11/2021 19:24

Many years ago it was called a ‘Spring Clean’

A clue regarding frequency is in the name

That's the point, they are removed and made clear again. So don't become particularly dirty. She's obsessed with clear gleaming glass 😂😂 I like lines and a plush surface on the carpet.😳

We do kill 2 birds with one stone, the catching up with my music and she talk on the phone with whomever she wants to for hrs on end..
