How often do you deep clean your house all the way through?

Firstly, AIBU to be totally fed up of cleaning?!
My house is not a tip (I don't think!) but I have just spent 2 whole days cleaning it from top to bottom and it's still not finished. Twice a year I usually deep clean all the way through- things such as touch up paint, clean rugs/sofa/carpet with a professional carpet cleaner, scrub the whites around the windows, pull beds/furniture out and clean behind. I also spent at least an hour cleaning every day without the bigger jobs such as changing beds, cleaning blinds/windows etc. It honestly feels like a complete never ending task. Me and DH have been cleaning for the last two days in preparation for Christmas (last bit of annual leave before we put our tree up). I really wish I had a cleaner.

My late mother was always cleaning down paint, washing rugs, etc. The writing on her tomb stone does not mention this.

I clean the important bits, loos, fridge, clothes, bedding.

A cleaner sounds like a great idea!

Birdcloud · 10/11/2021 23:05

Never- we Hoover once a week at the most , bathrooms when one of us notices and a spot scrub if the cats been sick. Our friends say we have a friendly relaxed home. Can’t afford a cleaner. Chill.

How are people not cleaning for an hour or so a day does nobody have kids or anything? Everyone I know spends so much time cleaning even on top of working. Can I have some tips on how to not clean and the house not be like an actual tip.
Get rid of clutter. Try the Organised Mum Method (in fact, she says don't start her cleaning regime until you've fully decluttered the house, she talks you through how to do this.) So, you do half an hour clean in a different room each weekday (as well as the basics of kitchen surfaces, hoover main living area floors.) And one day a week do a focus half-hour instead, in a different area each week so that over 8 weeks or so every area has had a reasonable deep clean (declutter, windows, skirting boards, under furniture). And the absolute freaking cherry on top is that you don't need to do cleaning catchup at the weekend!!! Just relax and do whatever you want (you still have to cook and clean up after that I guess)

My house is now so clean and organised (and I am far from this by nature) that if I miss a day (or three) you really can't tell!

PrincessNutella · 10/11/2021 23:09

I don't even know how the vacuum cleaner works. That's why I got married.

Wineandroses3 · 10/11/2021 23:32

I got in touch with a local estate agent, asked if they could tell me who they use to clean their rented houses for new tenant etc. I got in touch with them and arranged for them to do a deep clean on my bathroom, downstairs Loo and my kitchen. OMG amazing, those rooms gleamed, the shower looked brand new and she got the yellow tinge out of the grout in the tiles in the bathroom, she cleaned above the top of the kitchen units , the light fitting - everything. Only downside was I had to completely empty those rooms before she came, that took me ages and then ages to put it all away again , but I got rid of a lot of junk. I can deep clean the lounge/dining room etc myself now. It cost me a LOT of money, but it was so worth it I feel back in control now. Might get the car valeted 2mo 😆

Not since it was built!

Wineandroses3 · 10/11/2021 23:37

The worst job is cleaning the shower, it takes ages…if anyone has got any tips or handy hints on how to keep a shower clean pls share! 🚿

PickupaPenguin8 · 10/11/2021 23:44

Never. I will when we sell though. I do what I can when I can.

Porcupineintherough · 10/11/2021 23:51

Never.

I occasionally deep clean a room but mostly it's just a quick dust and hoover.

@ghejxodn

Argh maybe I'm the crazy one! But does it not get really dirty if you don't clean? An hour a day isn't much when you think of dishwasher/bathroom/making beds/sweeping/mopping etc?
I spend about 3hrs a day in bits and bats doing all the 'necessary' jobs. The floors get hoovered and mopped once a day, the bathrooms get wiped every morning, I'm just deep cleaning a room a day in preparation for Christmas at the minute, I have to dust, Hoover and mop every day because we have an open fire and the dust is awful. The beds are changed every Friday or Saturday and the upstairs hoovered once a week, but I don't allow the dogs, or shoes upstairs. I have four children, there are four adults and three kids at home, oldest child's partner lives with us, the other three adults all work 50/60 hour weeks. Me and the dogs don't mind the cleaning with the music on! I'm lucky enough to stay at home so I feel that it's my job to keep the house looking decent.

Which bits did you struggle with? I use the method daily shower spray which seems to help a lot and then flash with bleach the rest of the time My standards are pretty low Grin
Wineandroses3 · 10/11/2021 23:59

Notmycat I find my arm aches when I’m scrubbing the shower, I tend to leave it too long so trying to get the dried water marks out of it is a nightmare, A friend told me to use bleach spray on an abrasive sponge, I will look out for the method spray x

Ah ok! A cream cleaner on a non scratch sponge works really well, or viakal if you have hard water. Once it's done, get the method spray and use that, takes about 4 sprays after you shower I do not scrub Grin I'm lazy. Put it on and leave it to work (I never used to but the product needs time to do its job!)
Wineandroses3 · 11/11/2021 00:22

I’ve got some cif cream cleaner that I’ve never used so I’ll try that next time, it’s clean at the moment but that’s won’t last long 😆Thanks for the top tips ☺️

Mamanyt · 11/11/2021 00:48

The whole house? Never. I deep clean a room here and there as needed, and the kitchen and bath are regularly "deep cleaned" as they get so much used...but the whole house? If I am moving, it will get a deep cleaning after it is cleared of my belongings, leaving it nice and fresh for the next occupants. Other than that...life is too short.

MummyToOrla · 11/11/2021 01:27

Kitchen gets cleaned as used, floor swept and mopped before bed each night. Bathroom surfaces wiped over daily. Living room floor swept daily. Hall stairs and landing hovered weekly. Beds changed weekly. Fridge cleaned weekly before I fetch the shopping. Everything else can wait til it needs doing - which in a house with a toddler and soon to be newborn with hardly any visitors can be a good while lol

XenoBitch · 11/11/2021 01:31

No way.
I am a bit of a hoarder, so a deep clean is near to impossible.
I do try and clean the bits I can see.

Harmonypuss · 11/11/2021 02:09

Never!

Nanalisa60 · 11/11/2021 02:15

I’m another one that does a room at a time for the deep clean, usually twice a year usually in May and of course November getting ready for Christmas. I clean a lot probably a hour a day so house always looks pretty clean and tidy, but I’m always so surprised how much dust there is when I move furniture in a room when I do a deep clean . The worst job for me is the Venetian blinds I hate cleaning them, and the windows bloody terrible job.

Teachertired92 · 11/11/2021 04:03

I use an app called TOMM which breaks it down into daily jobs. Well worth it, takes me about 45 mins per day but like you I used to deep clean 2 times a year. This app incorporates the deep clean aspects on a Friday! I don’t do hardly anything at a weekend - just 15 minutes.

Walkaround · 11/11/2021 06:31

Tip for those surprised to see dust when they move furniture to clean behind and under it: don’t move the furniture to look for it. Wink

As a matter of interest, why do some people mop their kitchen floor daily? Do they have numerous pets with muddy paws, or wear outdoor shoes around the house, or are they just phenomenally clumsy when cooking? Or do they eat off the floor? How do they cope with unmoppable carpets?

The perfect question- I used to say 'we only wear socks and slippers indoors' and wonder why other people's houses were so clean, turns out half the time we forget and sometimes get the kids to put their shoes on to be ready for school etc!!!!

Cat brought a live mouse in, I hunted high and low. Moved all the furniture and cleaned as I went. Just to add I could smell it but I couldnt find the poor soul. A week later I found it hanging out of the skirting board just see its tail and a foot. So to answer your question, when I'm mouse hunting 🤣🤣🤣🤣

@Teachertired92 you might feel less tired if you cleaned less.

45 mins of cleaning (tidying is not the same) is a lot!
