'Told off' by a random stranger

I was on my way to an appointment with the Midwife this morning around 10:30am.

I was running late because I was feeding DD and didn't have time for any breakfast. Left to get the bus and grabbed a pack of Salt and Vinegar Squares from Sainsbury's and ate it at the bus stop once I had gotten off the bus.

Minding my business eating my Squares and some woman comes up to me saying 'you shouldn't be eating crisps at this time of the day'Hmm I told her I'm pregnant and I'll eat whatever I want when I want. She then said I was rude and unfit to be mum and went about her day!

AIBU in thinking she's actually the rude one coming up to me telling me off as if I'm her 5 year old child lolConfused

My reply is always "If I want your opinion, I'll ask for it!" Silly cow! But it is annoying, coming from a stranger. I wonder if she would so readily offer her advice to a large hunk of a man? Probably not, in case he decked her!

KisstheTeapot14 · 09/11/2021 17:49

Lord above, some people need to get a life of their own don't they?

Yes - being pregnant or having a small baby does seem to encourage certain members of the community to make random comments.

Your bump is big/small/ your baby is big/small/cries to much/you're breastfeeding/bottle feeding? They're too big to be in that buggy (thanks male bus driver who had no idea DS had a disability)

And soon after having baby 1 people will be asking if you're pregnant again or when you will be having no. 2.

Now DS is almost 12 I get less of these nosy/silly comments! But I still remember them.

Happy crisp eating - just ignore the busybodies of this world.

Salt n Vinegar are totally delish.

Bertiebiscuit · 09/11/2021 17:52

No one ever has the right to comment on what a stranger - or colleague-is eating as long as it is legal - this is no one else's business, which in my experience mostly happens to women - "food shaming" is every bit as unnacceptable as "ft shaming" or "slt shaming". The works needs to stop policing women's behaviour - and maybe take the odd look at what Men get up to 🤔

WORLD!!!!!

It always amazes me when people feel they have the right to tell complete strangers what they should and shouldn't be doing!

Not read the whole thread - how old was she? When I was young, many decades ago, it was generally considered very bad manners to eat in public. To this day I find it slightly difficult to eat anything on public transport or in the street ...

She was rude, but maybe she was also old and stuck in the past?

fetchacloth · 09/11/2021 17:58

Foxtrot Oscar and mind your own business would be what I would have said. 👿

She was rude because she was rude.

Absolutely no need to start bringing ageism into it.

MyPOV · 09/11/2021 18:01

I would have told her after you were done with the chips you were planning to eat an ice cream Sunday with loads of fudge and whipped cream. 🍦 🍨 😋

munchkinman · 09/11/2021 18:01

Wtf!! You eat what you like when you like…

Coffeemaniac · 09/11/2021 18:03

She should’ve minded her own business! How rude!

Skyelils · 09/11/2021 18:07

I would have told her to f@@k off and get a life

SpidersAreShitheads · 09/11/2021 18:10

OP, you've given an explanation as to why you were eating crisps in the morning - but you really don't need to.

You're an adult. If you want to eat crisps at any time of the day, that's up to you. You don't need to explain to ANYONE why you're eating crisps (or anything else). Your body, your choice. It doesn't matter if there was no good reason other than you fancied a pack of crisps at 9am, it's no one's business but your own. No need to explain it to anyone.

Pliudev · 09/11/2021 18:13

Some of this seems to have deteriorated into an excuse for being vile about older women. No it's not right to interfere in what someone else is doing but some of the suggested responses are misogynistic and unnecessarily abusive. There often seems to a disturbing level of vitriol reserved for the older female and I wonder what those posters will be like when they reach a more mature age themselves?

Passenger42 · 09/11/2021 18:13

I'm more shocked by the disgusting language from people on these replies. It's really not necessary

Granjeanne · 09/11/2021 18:15

If you were eating the crisps to combat pregnancy nausea, perhaps you should have just puked all over her? That'd teach her!

Threewheeler1 · 09/11/2021 18:16

@GinIronic

I didn’t realise there was a “eat between” label on a packet of crisps. Cheddars are my breakfast of choice - with a few olives.
When I was pregnant with DS1 I ate olives all day. I firmly believe that olives are the food of champions. Also, a fruit and therefore healthy. My desk drawer at work was also well stocked with mini Cheddars which are actually the food of the Gods. I very much approve of your breakfast feast Grin

Some people get a kick out of making other people feel shit. I suspect this lady was such a person.
calvados · 09/11/2021 18:20
