'Told off' by a random stranger

I was on my way to an appointment with the Midwife this morning around 10:30am.

I was running late because I was feeding DD and didn't have time for any breakfast. Left to get the bus and grabbed a pack of Salt and Vinegar Squares from Sainsbury's and ate it at the bus stop once I had gotten off the bus.

Minding my business eating my Squares and some woman comes up to me saying 'you shouldn't be eating crisps at this time of the day'Hmm I told her I'm pregnant and I'll eat whatever I want when I want. She then said I was rude and unfit to be mum and went about her day!

AIBU in thinking she's actually the rude one coming up to me telling me off as if I'm her 5 year old child lolConfused

@TheYearOfSmallThings

I am the old woman in these stories! Because I once told a young guy who was clipping his fingernails on the train that it isn't something to do in public, with bits flying everywhere.

He looked at me with patience and sympathy and waited for me to dodder off and leave him to complete his clipping.

There's a special place in hell for people who clip their nails in public 🤢
Sienna9522 · 09/11/2021 00:07

I’d love her to see me at work, eating chocolate for breakfast Grin

DueOct30th · 09/11/2021 00:24

I usually find ‘do me a favour babe/ love’ usually works I mean it’s short for do me a favour and fuck off but you don’t actually have to say the fuck off part. People get it. 🤣

YourFinestPantaloons · 09/11/2021 00:31

Sorry OP, the vision of a heavily pregnant woman stuffing her face with crisps and telling some loon to do one at a bus stop has really tickled me GrinGrin

Is it a random superstition thing? My mum is a bit like this - you'll just idly be doing something like eating a block cheese and suddenly she'll bat it out your hands and say "Never eat cheese on a Tuesday, it's 3 years bad luck and you'll get an infection in your little toe" HmmConfused I swear she makes half of them up and during my pregnancies she drove me potty with them. Nearly passed out when she found out the pram we bought was kept in the house before the baby was born.

Brusselsprouts21 · 09/11/2021 00:46

Think its more rude you only had one bag. I would demolish a multipack of them when i was pregnant Grin

beachtosunset · 09/11/2021 00:47

yabu - she wanted one of your crisps Grin

Ozgirl75 · 09/11/2021 05:23

I have a very fair child and when he was a baby I had numerous people on separate occasions say things like “I hope you put sunscreen on him” and I always used to stare straight at them and say “nope, I just let him burn to a crisp” or “no, I love the look of a really tanned baby” or similar.
I mean, I live in Australia and I have a fair haired child (and am fair myself), as if I haven’t heard of sunscreen.

Ozgirl75 · 09/11/2021 05:24

Oh and TWICE people said “is that his natural hair colour?” (white blonde) and the second time I replied “no, I dye my infant son’s hair”. The first time I just boggled at her.

Missmissmiiiiiiiiisss · 09/11/2021 06:58

I would have assumed you had pregnancy sickness and needed to mainline carbs at all times of day from personal experience

What a horrid comment. Hope your midwife was very nice to you and the rest of your dat had no more odd/rude people.

Whereismumhiding3 · 09/11/2021 07:16

Yanbu
It was intrusive and rude for this stranger to even comment on you eating crisis at breakfast. Pregnancy 'morning' sickness and making sure you eat something to keep blood sugars up is very good reason and it's none of her business anyway. This woman has some serious issues that she thinks she's entitled to comment on others eating a packet of crisps! You were quite right to to respond as you did. The IRONY of her calling you rude!!!

Reassure yourself that she's probably like this to other strangers and her family- I doubt she is popular giving her unwanted judgemental and frankly wrong opinions! What an unpleasant bullying woman...

UhOhOops · 09/11/2021 07:49

Is 7.48 an acceptable time to eat a ready salted squares sandwich? I don't have a bus journey scheduled...

TheSunAlwayShinesOnStreaming · 09/11/2021 09:21

With half chewed crisps. Spraying everywhere.Grin

This post reminds me, my nan (born in the 1910s,) used to say you should never cut your fingernails or toenails on a Friday or a Sunday. Fuck knows why. Confused

With the woman in the OP's case, and many other cases that other OP's have listed, it's just rudeness. In my case, where the woman said I need to put my cleavage away (when I was wearing a vest top in 85 F mid summer weather,) it was pure jealousy. She was jealous of my fantastic bosoms. Grin

Hmmm, yeah in some ways, the OP gave a good valid reaction, but as I said earlier, IMO, it's best to ignore rude and onboxious people like this. Because ignoring them makes them furious, because their cunty behaviour has got no response or reaction.

And other posters agreed and one poster said 'yes it's best to ignore them, coz if you DO react and tell them to do one, or fuck off or whatever, you end up bringing yourself down to their level then, and get called rude yourself.' Like you say, the irony though! Of this woman calling the OP rude!

These real-life trolls are best ignored, like the trolls who try to goad and bait on here. Ignore them, and they sit there quietly seething coz they got no response from the person they aimed their goady comments at, but they can't say anything, because they have no ammunition, and no argument, if you don't bite/don't respond.

Carriecakes80 · 09/11/2021 17:32

Think someone else put what I was going to put, that I am pregnant atm and feeling nauseous the whole time, there is no let-up, so my midwife (who I love lol) has told me 'Fu*k everything, eat constantly, nibble the second you wake up to the second you go to bed, in fact, have biscuits in your pocket for when you have that fiftieth pee in the night!'
She knows I'm suffering, so salt n vinegar crisps and salted pretzel sticks are a life saver right now....had that woman accosted me, I think I would have thrown my pregnancy notes at her! Don' you dare feel bad! x

Unfit to be a mum because you were rude or unfit because you eat squares? LOL. I wouldn't lose sleep over it. No-one has the right to tell other people what to eat and when (unless you are a dietician) Squares are lush so high 5 that one.
