Read this sex scene from Giles Coren’s failed novel!!!

In his latest column in The Times Vile Coren is asserting that there are no successful white male authors any more. Yeah, sure, keep telling yourself that’s why your novel failed so spectacularly and you won The Bad Sex Award, Giles. Then read the actual, totally bizarre sex scene (the bit about the shower head!):

@lentilsforever

His friends and family probably all posting screen shots to him with laughing emojis!
If the general public were calling my friend/family member an idiotic cunt on social media, I don’t think I’d send them screen shots with laughing emojis.

Unless, of course, I also thought they were an insufferable twat.

Athenajm80 · 09/11/2021 14:37

I briefly got confused and thought it was by Gyles Brandreth so read it in his voice. It simultaneously made it scarier and more amusing

TaraR2020 · 09/11/2021 14:41

@athenajm80 😂😂

TooBigForMyBoots · 09/11/2021 14:49

I think that when he was younger he, and those around him, viewed him as a bit of a literary enfant terrible. But he lacked the work ethic and talent to deliver.🤷‍♀️ Now he's a mediocre, middle aged man who owes his career to his father's name. He could be grateful for that and continue coasting very comfortably. But he doesn't. He rages. Its everyone else's fault. Nobody understands his unique intellect. They're plebs. Or paedophiles. It's because he's a a white MC man.🤦‍♀️🙄

He didnt become L'enfant Terrible, he became Kevin the Teenager. But without the charm.

TooBigForMyBoots · 09/11/2021 15:01

OMG @Athenajm80 he should totally get Gyles Brandreth to voice the audiobook.😂😂😂

lentilsforever · 09/11/2021 15:14
@lentilsforever An “absolute mauling” of someone who celebrated and gleefully mocked the death of a young woman? Do you think I need to #bekind? Giles Coren seems like such a sensitive and compassionate man. By jove, maybe you’re right and I have been a bit rough on him. The word on the NW10 streets is that he’s a thoroughly nice chap.
Look at your OP? My point was… the thread went from something lighthearted to well, something really very not!

Can’t understand why you didn’t start your thread about that rather than this? As that is clearly the issue

lentilsforever · 09/11/2021 15:15

@BouncyMonk

* If the general public were calling my friend/family member an idiotic cunt on social media, I don’t think I’d send them screen shots with laughing emojis. *

This is exactly what his friends and family will be doing,

NoOtherShadeOfBlue · 09/11/2021 15:24

@lentilsforever how strange that you are so confident he would find this thread discussing his terrible writing and lack of talent utterly hilarious when he gleefully celebrated the death of a young woman who wrote a pretty mild critical tweet about him once? How can he be so thin-skinned about that but apparently cheerfully immune to any other discussion of his (many) failures as a human being and writer?

As for the change in tone - not so inexplicable I’d say. I found that sex scene as hilarious as anyone else (sadly, not due to the elegance of his satire) but his other behaviour utterly repulsive. So my feelings change depending on which we’re discussing.

Finally, if he and his wife can laugh off the comments on his mediocrity, good for them. But if they derive any amusement from reading about the pain his tweet about the journalist’s death caused, they are truly contemptible. If you’re trying to defend him, giving us as image of them chuckling over dinner about the response to his callous glee when she died, really isn’t helping.

KentishTowner · 09/11/2021 15:26

@lentilsforever I think that’s quite common that long threads on MN tend to change in subject matter and tone as multiple people express their differing opinions. Is that really such a problem? Does everything have to be lighthearted?

No, you’re right

lentilsforever · 09/11/2021 15:31

My point about him and friends finding funny is that you would only think he’d be hurt or alarmed if you didn’t actually read his articles and understand the sense of humour of the people he will socialise with.
I went to public school and this is exactly The type of thing they will be laughing about. A mumsnet thread.

Camdenish · 09/11/2021 15:31

He doesn’t live in N10. Unless he’s moved. Please god he’s moved.

I’m pretty sure HE doesn’t even think of himself as a thoroughly nice chap.

TooBigForMyBoots · 09/11/2021 15:32

I and others posted about him being a revolting individual on pg1 of the thread. So it's hardly @KentishTowner's fault.

lentilsforever · 09/11/2021 15:36

It’s no one’s fault!!
I was just pointing out the discrepancy between OP and the actual content

ShesComeUndone · 09/11/2021 15:38

That was hilarious.

Didn’t his wife have a great fashion blog a few years ago? I seem to remember it being funny and well written and really useful. How does she put up with such a dick? (That question is deliberately ambiguous).

I might be wrong about the blog as it was a while ago that I read it.

KentishTowner · 09/11/2021 15:45

@lentilsforever I thought the sex scene would be a funny topic for MN to discuss. I don’t have a bloody clue what GC and his public school boy friends would make of this MN thread or whether they are reading it at all. I suspect not as they’re probably writing 3 columns a week and running the country. After reading a very funny Twitter thread about Giles’ assertion that there are no successful male authors and also the sex scene itself I was prompted to listen to his podcast for the first time.

podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/giles-coren-has-no-idea/id1470598116

And tbh I thought he sounded pretty cross about the Twitter storm and his bad sex writing being mocked. But maybe it’s all fabricated outrage and actually he and Esther are sitting and laughing about it. I really don’t care either way. But I do think it is an interesting topic of discussion for MN.

Agreed

lentilsforever · 09/11/2021 16:05

Just curious why you name changed for it?! Nothing to be ashamed of surely?

lentilsforever · 09/11/2021 16:06

I always always search Op before posting

I’ve been caught out getting invested in some (involving sick children) that turned out to be complete fabrications based on history

NoOtherShadeOfBlue · 09/11/2021 16:10

Well, if he and his public school friends are screenshotting and laughing, I hope when they read the posts about his despicable tweet about the journalist’s death makes them feel a flicker of shame and disgust, even if they do affect to laugh it off. His general twattishness and bizarre ideas about sex (and how many hands one person can have!) is one thing, but that goes so far beyond what anyone could find excusable.

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 09/11/2021 16:20

@Bellringer

30 seconds i'lll never get back Some funny comments afterwards
That's what she said Grin
TooBigForMyBoots · 09/11/2021 16:52

🤣🤣🤣 @BlameItOnTheBlackStar.

KentishTowner · 09/11/2021 17:08

There’s more bad(ly written) sex! ‘Winkler’ is truly the gift that keeps on giving! Obviously, just to reiterate, it’s all a massive joke and Giles meant it to be crap and never wanted to win the Booker Prize or anything.

Read this sex scene from Giles Coren’s failed novel!!!
OP posts:
Trixiefirecracker · 09/11/2021 17:21

@KentishTowner I think you are somewhat fixated. Maybe try and go do something a bit more relaxing than endlessly searching for bad writing by Coren.

KentishTowner · 09/11/2021 17:32

@Trixiefirecracker you’re right, I am fixated on how bad the sex scenes from his failed novel are.

I think someone using a Mumsnet thread to tell someone to do something else other than post on Mumsnet is hilariously hypocritical!
