Go to A&E?

Sorry, I know this isn’t an AIBU and these threads are really annoying, but I’m home alone and can’t figure out whether to go to A&E or stay at home until DH and kids are home later tonight and reassess.

I’ve fainted three times today.

Firstly in the shower this morning, but managed to sit on the bathroom floor before I fell down. Thought maybe I just got up too quickly this morning, low blood pressure etc.

Then it happened again a couple of hours later in the kitchen. Fell to the floor, hurt my hip, think I was only unconscious for less than a minute.

Finally, it happened about an hour ago. More scary this time, as I don’t remember it happening, but woke up in my hallway feeling bruised as if I’d fallen. Think I was only out for a minute or two.

This is really odd. Never happened before. No underlying health conditions, although I feel like I might have a mild UTI today.

Call 111 at the very least. Please do not drive. Is your nearest A&E far away? You need to seek urgent care, especially if you don’t know a reason why you keep fainting.

Turtles25 · 06/11/2021 18:08

Just came to say go to A & E but you already are.
Hope you feel better soon. X

@JaniieJones

'Well apparently it is serious enough for an ambulance so what do you know?'

Hey its a chat forum I'm sharing my opinion like everyone else. The dh will return when he hears his wife has an ambulance on way anyway, surely he could've taken her himself if she'd asked him to return after her first fainting do?

We'll have a thread saying someone really ill had to wait hours for an ambulance as they were snowed under..

What makes you think that OP isn't really ill?
AdobeWanKenobi · 06/11/2021 18:09

@Derbee

No, A&E would be completely inappropriate
Fainting was the sign that my mother had a serious heart issue and needed a pacemaker to regulate it. Inappropriate? What’s inappropriate is you spouting this utter bollocks to a vulnerable OP. Thankfully there are people here who gave her the right advice because it’s not an exaggeration to say ignoring her symptoms and listening to you could have killed her.
AttaGirrrrl · 06/11/2021 18:10

But her DH doesn’t have an ECG machine, or a way to measure her blood pressure or blood sugar, does he?

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 06/11/2021 18:10

@Derbee

No, A&E would be completely inappropriate
Please refrain from ever giving anyone medical advice again.
ScribblingPixie · 06/11/2021 18:12

Make sure you tell them about the suspected UTI. My friend had this and it was a kidney infection.

Offmyfence · 06/11/2021 18:12

@Derbee

No, A&E would be completely inappropriate
Please do explain why..
AdobeWanKenobi · 06/11/2021 18:13

Please refrain from ever giving anyone medical advice again

Amen.

This will be one of those “tis but a mere scratch” posters who claim to only use A&E if they need to crawl there with limbs hanging off and doing a Tesco big shop on the way.

Flyingbymypants · 06/11/2021 18:15

@Derbee A&E entirely appropriate for a person who has fainted 3 times in a day. They need blood tests and ECG monitoring.

SueSaid · 06/11/2021 18:17

@AttaGirrrrl

But her DH doesn’t have an ECG machine, or a way to measure her blood pressure or blood sugar, does he?
Oh but they do all that at a&e! To sit all day and call 111 who then calls an ambulance would seem odd when her dh could have taken her.

Then there'll be ill oaps sat waiting for an ambulance for hours as they're busy taxiing people in.

TheEleventhMonth · 06/11/2021 18:19

Good luck OP, let us know how you get on.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 06/11/2021 18:21

What exactly is A&E for then?

Because accidents and bleeding .. not good enough.

Feverish and feeling like dead.. not good enough.

Fainting repeatedly not good enough.

Infections and other concerning signs.. not good enough.

Horrible persistent sudden pain ... not good enough.

What's the A&E for then?

LaikO · 06/11/2021 18:22

You did the right thing, OP. Also, we don't know that the OP was prioritised over all of these hypothetical OAPs sitting waiting for an ambulance. I doubt they'll prioritise her over someone who's had a heart attack, for example. No way should she be driving, and if it's related to her UTI getting worse then she really does need to be seen ASAP.

TheShadoutCrepes · 06/11/2021 18:25

I assume the 111 call handler (who will have taken a more detailed history from the OP) will have advised ambulance rather than family conveyance to A&E is because their risk threshold is relative low for the patient having a further episode of loss of consciousness (cause unknown at this stage) and her dh is unlikely to be able to provide emergency care for his wife while he is simultaneously trying to drive a car.

Thomasina79 · 06/11/2021 18:25

I hope you are ok it’s scary being on your own when something like this happens and you are completely right to try and get help.

On this sort of thread when someone is reaching out for advice on worrying health issues I do think people should only respond if they are proper health professionals.

OP let us know how you are if you can x

Winterfellismyhome · 06/11/2021 18:26

Some people on mumsnet are so weird about going to A&E. Seems like you should only go if your heads falling off, anything less and you better wait 3 weeks for a GP appointment

Hope you're okay OP Thanks

mineofuselessinformation · 06/11/2021 18:36

Yet another medical thread where posters come on and clearly know everything fuck all and are telepathic to boot.
FWIW, I got sent to A&E last week by 111 (no ambulance needed) for an unexplained sub-conjunctival haemorrhage (burst blood vessel in the eye to you and me).
Certainly, don't go for a fractured eyelash, but most people are sensible enough to know when they need investigation / urgent help.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 06/11/2021 18:38

good luck
do you know if it is related to the position your body is in?

Cryalot2 · 06/11/2021 18:42

Hope you are ok op.
Seek medical help asap.
Meanwhile do not drive or close the bathroom/toilet door, or have a bath or shower.
Is there anyone who you can call to be with you until you get sorted.

Good wishes C

This is not a case for A and E in my eyes.

Out of hours dr. Yes.

anniegun · 06/11/2021 18:43

Always worth asking randoms on the Internet rather than calling 111.

Offmyfence · 06/11/2021 18:44

Rationale?
Nocutenamesleft · 06/11/2021 18:44

@mummyh2016

It you're on hold to 111 for too long then I'd go to A+E if it could be a water infection. I had one a few weeks ago that spread to my kidneys because my GP didn't give me antibiotics quick enough. I ended up at A+E the next day anyway in agony to get the correct antibiotics. Only those who have never had a UTI will play it down.
UTI and kidney infection are two different things

I’ve had multiple of both and a kidney infection had me almost in ICU!
