When will they hurry up and ban fireworks for private sale?
Have 2 dogs shivering under the sofa. Huge bangs outside. What if you have a baby in bed?
Anti social behaviour if you ask me.
Take your kids to a proper display.

@Whinge I've never experienced that.

MrsKeats · 06/11/2021 18:02

Yep loads of fun for all these injured people.

@Santastuckincustoms

I do wonder how the British would cope with any of the other major celebrations from other cultures. As a nation we don't do fun very well do we?

If la tomatina was British we would moan about the clothing stains and wasps until we closed it down to one person eating a tomato with a knife and fork in a sealed room.

It's so much fun looking after the vulnerable and those with ptsd when literal explosions are happening outside. Absolutely fabulous fun.

No one wants them banned, as many have said a hundred times over in this thread. But every other neighbour shouldn't be able to set of hundreds a night over the space of months.

They just need to be restricted to certain nights, licences and only sold for public displays. It's not difficult at all to understand that.

Tilltheend99 · 06/11/2021 18:06

@Ghoulette thank you. I’m hoping the exhaustion will stop her from noticing the noise as badly tonight. 🤞

balonsz · 06/11/2021 18:06

@Ghoulette you can get 2 "selection boxes" for £30 or so, I've seen them in Tesco. But I've never seen anyone sent off 100s of fireworks, that would be expensive!

Ghoulette · 06/11/2021 18:06

@whinge one of our neighbours has been holding a display every other week. No they don't need to but they will, regardless of religion, if they are an utter twat.

Some people unfortunately do.

At £30 you can get two tickets to the local display. I would also bet people aren't just buying fireworks, they are also loading up on food and beers on top of that.

balonsz · 06/11/2021 18:09

Whenever I've been to Battersea, it's involved at least 2 tickets, parking money & food & drink which is ££££ as you need to get there early. For many it's cheaper to have them at home. Not saying it's right but that's one reason people do it, particularly when it's a few families together.

I don't really have a problem with fireworks, there is an issue with some people using them antisocially but there seems to be little will to tackle that largely based on an idea that it would be racist to do so (and no, Diwali is not the time it becomes an issue). However the issue with antisocial noise from fireworks is dwarfed by the noise from antisocial use of cars, loud reving engines, pop-pop exhausts, beeping horns as they race each other and the police doing absolutely nothing. Antisocial behaviour is the issue, not fireworks.

Willyoujustbequiet · 06/11/2021 18:18

I havent got a problem with fireworks as we just don't seem to get them where I am. My dogs have never been scared of them either.

I do have a far bigger issue with inconsiderate dog owners though.

Tilltheend99 · 06/11/2021 18:24

@alloalloallo how awful that your friends horse was injured! Flowers (my baby just jumped off of all four limbs while typing this as someone let something off so loud and close like a grenade Shock makes me so sad)

My DH said he saw a thing on BBC breakfast where they said that people need to inform their neighbours if they will be letting off fireworks otherwise it is classed as a nuisance. So your friend could reasonably make a complaint about it to her local council. Don’t know if it would make much difference but you never know!

MrsKeats · 06/11/2021 18:28

This has nothing to do with inconsiderate dog owners.

It is fairly easy to argue that they are part of the same problem, anti-social behaviour, be that people who let off fireworks at 02:00, or people who let their dog bark all day, both are being anti-social.
DickMabutt73962 · 06/11/2021 18:39

But then what would people on Mumsnet complain about?

MrsKeats · 06/11/2021 18:40

But it's not one or the another. It should be neither.
So a pointless comment.
Are PTSD sufferers also bothering you?
Children who have sensory issues?
Dementia sufferers?

Well aren't you a party pooper OP!
DerAlteMann · 06/11/2021 18:56

Well it's kind of you to say so, but I don't actually recall asking you.

FranklySonImTheGaffer · 06/11/2021 18:56

I understand that fireworks are pretty and probably provide a nice evening of family entertainment but I would 100% support a ban.

I have family members who run a sanctuary and boarding cattery & kennels in the middle of nowhere. Every year they reduce their prices for bonfire night to push people to get their pets out of the way so they aren't scared.
Every year they are available with a horse box in case someone's terrified horse gets injured (and they've been called upon several times).

Tonight I've got a dog who is unsettled because dickheads around here have been letting fireworks off in their gardens since 4pm. It was the same yesterday.

I think actually it's right that animals come first - people come first in 99.9% of all issues and it just isn't right to terrify and hurt animals so we can be entertained (hunting, whales in sea life centres, dancing bears, tiger Cubs bread for petting zoos, all animals being scared and abused in the name of entertainment). But I'm guessing most people will look at fireworks differently?
People tend to forget about the wildlife in this but wild birds, farm animals, foxes, rabbits, badgers, they're all effected by fireworks.

I think pp's are right though, the types of people who do this aren't going to read this thread of give a damn about the damage they do.

If we banned everything that some group did not like then we would not even be allowed to breathe. We have to take a reasonable perspective on things, a balance where we we do not ban fun, even if some people don't like it.

I agree that there should be greater restrictions on fireworks, but the problem is not the private sale of fireworks. When I was a kid private sale of fireworks existed, but they were not being set off late at night, they were not being set off week after week. The same with cars, there were not lots of loud pop-pop exhausts, the issue is anti-social behaviour.

You seem to feel that everyone who does not agree with you is making a "pointless comment", someone or something is not wrong just because you do not agree with it.

Some people have come from warzones, some of them have PTSD, some of those who do will be triggered by fireworks, many will not. Some children have sensory issues, many children love fireworks. The reflex to ban everything someone decides they do not like is childish.

sleepycoffeemonster · 06/11/2021 19:10

I totally agree with @MatildaIThink, people just seem to shout down everyone who doesnt agree with you with exaggerated examples of all the 'sufferers.'

Well if were to tale that stance, I get infuriated with the neighbours cats shitting in our garden all year round where our kids play, very anti social to allow pets to do this and not care and that is the majority of cat owners therefore we should ban owning cats (and dogs as they poop on the floor and some owners dont pick up) because there are lots of us 'suffering.'

nordica · 06/11/2021 19:10

So could one of the posters saying "it's just one night a year" explain why this is the third evening in a row with nonstop fireworks around? 🤨 We've had Diwali and Guy Fawkes so tonight is what exactly...?

TheChip · 06/11/2021 19:12

It just sounds like constant explosions in the distance out the back of my house. Thankfully not as bad as yesterday since the sounds were as if they were in my garden then.

I'm also not for banning them, even for private use. I just think they should be made to be more quiet, preferably silent but I know that would be unlikely. Keep the louder ones for displays that are set days and times so at least people can prepare.
