So sick of the constant stupid fireworks

When will they hurry up and ban fireworks for private sale?
Have 2 dogs shivering under the sofa. Huge bangs outside. What if you have a baby in bed?
Anti social behaviour if you ask me.
Take your kids to a proper display.

I absolutely hate them and don't understand how they're still legal. Awful for pets, awful for people with PTSD and basically noise pollution. They were going off last night until 3am in my area and I had to get up for work.

BeaucoupFish · 05/11/2021 21:43

@PinkWaferBiscuit
I hate Tescos
They don’t give a shit about anything except profits and their food is appalling

BeaucoupFish · 05/11/2021 21:45

@CecilieRose
Not just noise pollution also air pollution
I can’t understand why they are not banned

Tilltheend99 · 05/11/2021 21:46

@DeepaBeesKiti live in south east/south coast and it has now been going since 6pm. Sounds as if right outside and is literally ringing in my ears. This is the longest/worst night so far but has gone on at least the past five nights here. They leave all their rubbish in the park too.

specialsauce · 05/11/2021 21:47

@mydogisthebest I think you are being obtuse and deliberately misinterpreting my original post in order that you can keep banging on about how firework old people and wildlife,and all the others- dont worry I havent forgotten the list!!

I was evolving the conversation to highlight the social and environmental impact of fireworks v pets.

I think you are refusing to entertain the discussion I raise as you know that hands down pets are worse for the future of the planet.

You do dont you? Be honest. I know it's hard to admit because you love your dog, but they arent half an environmental disaster. Humans are worse though, obvs.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 05/11/2021 21:47

My baby hasn’t woken once with the fireworks going off - stuck on a bit of white noise in her bedroom and she’s fast asleep 🤷‍♀️

hamsterchump · 05/11/2021 21:47

Start/sign a petition if you want them banned or restricted but I don't think the majority agree so you might have to just get used to it or keep moaning and shouting into the void I guess. I'm afraid the people setting off fireworks and enjoying the displays aren't on Mumsnet at the moment to read your rants.

CoffeeAndKittens · 05/11/2021 21:47

@DeepaBeesKit

I always wonder where people live that they are hearing it "constantly".

I live in the south east. Heard about 5-10 mins of faint popping at 7.15. Nothing since. You could hardly hear what there was through the double glazing, if the tv had been on we wouldnt have heard it at all.

I live in the north, in a top floor flat, on a hill, which has a view across a mixed community, so some celebrating Halloween / Bonfire night and some Diwali. I can say, without a word of a lie, that since last weekend, fireworks have been going off constantly since about 6pm every day until about 10pm. Then sporadically until 2am. They are mostly massive displays of banging brightness. It sounds at best like cars constantly back-firing, at worst, gunfire (I know what that sounds like). Luckily, my two cats don't care and no-one in the household suffers from PTSD or any debilitating fear, but the noise is so constant, despite watching noisy film, that even I'm on edge and know there is no point going to bed any time soon despite being tired! I have friends with pets that are suffering and a couple with PTSD / autistic children and they are having an awful time this week. I'm genuinely glad you are not having to listen to the constant bombardment, but some of us are.
Grumpylate20s · 05/11/2021 21:48

Don't you all have sound proofing or heavily glazed windows 🤔

etulosba · 05/11/2021 21:48

l don’t mind it at this time of year, but then I live in the countryside so it’s generally pretty quiet.

So do I. Bangs are pretty normal. I hear gunfire and bird scarers year round. Fireworks are rare.

Perhaps we should go back to restricting the sale of fireworks to the public to the week before November 5th like it used to be.

fairymouse · 05/11/2021 21:51

I agree private sale should be banned , although in this country we're pretty tame with fireworks

I was absolutely terrified in Berlin at New Year's Eve a few years ago , people were just letting them off all over the place in the street!

QuestionEverythingOrBeASheep · 05/11/2021 21:51

@Ghoulette

Also, some twat across the road from me thinks setting off one loud, white firework every 2-3 minutes (sometimes even 5 mins) is fun. For the past half hour.

It's not. It's shit. If you are going to set them off in the garden at least make it worth it!!!!

My Twatish neighbours have decided that 21:45 is the ideal time to start their fireworks. Sod everyone else! Let's see who can create the loudest shit yourself bangs, that sound like lightning has just struck the house. Great! I'm glad they're having fun. My dog is quivering so hard under the sofa the whole sofa shakes. She was fine until a few years ago when another highly responsible Twat, decided 2pm was a great time to let random bangers off . To top it off 11 and 12 midnight is also the ideal time for bangers.

Honestly..... selfish is the new normal until 2022 when around mid January they will eventually stop.

Some shop have started selling only 'silent' fireworks. This is the way to go. That way everyone is happy.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 05/11/2021 21:52

@Grumpylate20s

Yes. It makes no difference when every house near us is letting off fireworks. We're in a densely populated area in a street full of semis and terrace houses the fireworks feel like they are in my living room because they are being set off mere metres away and no window double glazed or otherwise would solve that sadly.
WonderfulYou · 05/11/2021 21:54

I hardly think an evening or two of fireworks is comparable to the worry that your home and family might be blown up by a mortar round

An evening or two isn’t an issue. A planned event where people know it’s happening isn’t an issue.
Having random people buying explosives and setting them off all around you all night for days on end is an issue.

A couple of months ago a shooting happened near to where I live. 5 people were killed. It’s distressing hearing loud bangs from different angles all night. I don’t want to ruin anyone’s fun but I do want some stricter restrictions. How many accidents are caused by fireworks every year.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 05/11/2021 21:58

Oww I wonder if we share neighbours. Twat down the road has literally just started up with a box of extremely loud, extremely obnoxious explosives. Let's hope they don't last too long it's now almost 5 hours since they started here and I've had enough of resettling the toddler.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 05/11/2021 21:59

We get them a lot here, all the time.

I'm on the fence. Tonight I have a sick child who really needs to fucking sleep, but if she were her normal perky self, she'd be at her bedroom window watching them.

CovidinPrimary · 05/11/2021 22:00

All the local council displays have been cancelled this year near me, covid etc. We normally have a massive one in the local (quite famous) park, that’s over by 9pm, with garden fireworks not really being a thing.

Every other house is letting off HUGE LOUD fireworks instead to compensate - like professional grade the (giant) house behind me had fireworks timed to music, must of cost a fortune.

Behind their house is a paddock full of horses, we are semi rural, the local farmers are losing their shit - luckily my pets only take offence to the post man. Diwali last night was even worse, going off to the early hours

tabulahrasa · 05/11/2021 22:01

“There aren't any "proper displays" in Scotland because Queen Nicola is still banging on about Covid and they've all been cancelled.”

Eh? No they haven’t.

They all went ahead here, I’ve seen people on Facebook at ones in Ayrshire and Argyll as well, so I think it’s just yours, not a National thing.

CoffeeAndKittens · 05/11/2021 22:02

@Grumpylate20s

No. We live in an old converted mill complex and sadly the double glazing and sound proofing is abysmal. Might as well be living in a cardboard box.
Alpacahunter · 05/11/2021 22:04

Plymouth was packed! Shock

So sick of the constant stupid fireworks
Iheartmysmart · 05/11/2021 22:07

I’ve just taken advantage of a brief lull in the noise to take my dog out for a quick walk before bed. You can almost taste the air where so many fireworks have been set off. Not sure somebody is going to be overly chuffed in the morning to discover a firework on the roof of their convertible!

RickJames · 05/11/2021 22:09

In Germany you can buy enormous fireworks, some of them are basically bombs. They aren't expensive either. You have a four day window once a year to stock up before NYE. I've always loved them and have usually bought tons of them but last year they banned them in my Bundesland. It was fine, and i enjoyed not having a grey cloud of smoke hanging over the sky on NY Day. Plus not having all the crap in the street, rocket parts in my garden etc.

I'm totally thinking banning is fine now. It was fun but they are very disruptive and bad for the environment so YANBU.

olivehater · 05/11/2021 22:12

I don’t really like other peoples dogs and have to put up with them all year. So you can cope with a few nights of fireworks!

So when you are sat in your house, you are forced to sit and listen and be disturbed by multiple peoples dogs?

Your children can't sleep because of everyone else's dogs?

That's awful

Ghoulette · 05/11/2021 22:14

As can my Dementia suffering grandmother who is terrified of them, war vets, those with PTSD, kids with sensory issues etc etc etc. And no, I won't stop posting this over and over again.

3-4 months is hardly a couple of nights, too.
