So sick of the constant stupid fireworks

When will they hurry up and ban fireworks for private sale?
Have 2 dogs shivering under the sofa. Huge bangs outside. What if you have a baby in bed?
Anti social behaviour if you ask me.
Take your kids to a proper display.

I knew those 'Britons boycott Chinese goods over COVID-19' headlines weren't true.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 05/11/2021 22:16

Judging by the number of people who go to displays, lots of people like them, me included. I have dc - babies sleep though except dd1 but she was always awake screaming so made no real difference. We also made sure we trained our dog when he was a puppy - sat in the garden while they went off around us and have lots of reassurance and treats. This year he’s totally ignoring it. I get the arguments against year round celebrations but complaining about fireworks on fireworks night is ridiculous.

LittleDandelionClock · 05/11/2021 22:16

I live in a rural area in a small village. No fireworks. Haven't heard a single one.

Another reason to live out here in the countryside.

takes smug hat back off, and basks in the quiet.. Smile

I do fucking hate fireworks though. Noisy bastard things. Should be banned, apart from at big public displays.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 05/11/2021 22:16

Agreed fucking hate them.Poor animals . Dangerous and unnecessary should be banned apart from pre arranged displays.

Rosebel · 05/11/2021 22:16

Personally it doesn't bother me although I often wonder how safe it is for anyone to buy fireworks.
I'm lucky though. They've been going off since 6 o clock here and my baby has slept through and our cats don't give a toss.
Must be awful for those with scared children or pets or suffer from PTSD.

Blossomtoes · 05/11/2021 22:17

It’s once a year. Our dog hasn’t even noticed.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 05/11/2021 22:19

Many of us have nor said we dislike them. I like them at displays and I'd like them just as much if they were not as loud. No one needs access to explosives so why can't we just stick to using them at public displays.

CheshireChat · 05/11/2021 22:20

I love fireworks, particularly the loud ones, I even love the smell and the eerie fog that remains in the air when everyone's gone to bed and everything's quiet again...

But if they were banned/ only quiet ones allowed/ only organised displays then it really wouldn't make significant impact on my life. It just wouldn't. It's 2 nights out of 365 and I'd still have all of the other nice things associated with Bonfire Night/ NY to make up for it.

And sure, my otherwise neurotic cat and ASD son are both fine, one indifferent, one enjoying himself respectively, but I can easily imagine what it would be like if they were both upset so have sympathy for those who are struggling.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 05/11/2021 22:21

@Ghoulette that’s unusual as usually dementia patients remember their childhood and younger years fondly and fireworks definitely featured heavily for many through those younger years.

I do think they needn’t be obnoxiously loud but actually this years’ so far have been pretty normal and short lived round here. Mostly crackly ones. The fact members of the public can buy them has always baffled me (although I love sparklers).

etulosba · 05/11/2021 22:22

Then I compared this to my diesel SUV. My god.....cheese is a drop in ocean vs the school run!!!

That’s reassuring.

I have never done a school run in my life. I can enjoy my cheese stress free.

etulosba · 05/11/2021 22:22

Ha ha!

Wrong thread.

olivehater · 05/11/2021 22:26

No Nyx but I have to put up with them
running up to my kids off leads when they shouldnt be when out for walks regularly.
I regularly have to dodge dog shit on the pavements in my village. Dogs intrude on other peoples lives far more than fireworks do in the grand scheme of things.

MrsKeats · 05/11/2021 22:28

Still going here at 10.30
The selfishness is astonishing.

I worked on a dementia unit for years, and bonfire night and NYE was always hell. A few patients did like them yes, but a large number didn't because they don't understand. It's not simply a case of them living in their fond past. They literally don't understand what's going on around them.

Dementia patients aren't cookie cutter and every single one is different. Some react fine one night and watch them happily, and the next night they are terrified. Some are also war vets so it's 100x worse when they vaguely remember but don't understand what's happening.

Another poster here posted about the dementia patients she is looking after tonight, one of whom needs one on one care purely because the fireworks terrify him.

Still in full swing here too. Sad It's going to be a long night.
Moonlaserbearwolf · 05/11/2021 22:39

I haven’t heard any private fireworks displays this evening. It must vary so much by area.

Completely agree that buying fireworks should be restricted to large organised displays, or at the very least require a license. If a few thousand people every year in the UK end up in A&E with firework injuries, it seems crazy that any adult can buy them.

Nyxs · 05/11/2021 22:43

Sounds like the dig owners in your village are really bad.

But it's not quite the same as people nor even been able to get away from it in their own homes.

And as people have said, it's not just dogs. It's people too that are distressed. Some who can't just "put up with it".

Rovicha88 · 05/11/2021 22:43

Still going strong here OP! I can’t believe there are actually people out there who think setting off loud fireworks at nearly 11pm is acceptable. So so selfish

BurntTheFuckOut · 05/11/2021 22:44

Still going here too, sigh.

PeachesPumpkin · 05/11/2021 22:49

To be fair, in my experience, dog owners have zero consideration for others, so I don’t see why we should be expected to stop a long-standing tradition which brings cheer to so many.
I am sure there are responsible dog owners out there somewhere, but sadly I haven’t met any.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 05/11/2021 22:53

No one is saying we should stop fireworks entirely. Why can't public displays be a considered and reasonable compromise?

YourFinestPantaloons · 05/11/2021 22:53

YANBU

I hate fireworks, they're too loud, they're boring and whilst I am not a dog lover at all (in fact dogs mostly annoy me) the fact that they give dogs heart attacks should be enough for others to have consideration for their neighbours.

Awful things and I can't believe that we are just allowed to buy them from the supermarket unregulated!

KeeG8181 · 05/11/2021 22:54

Just walked past DS'S room and he's bloody stood up in bed looking at the fireworks going "ooooh"
Thanks Guy Fawkes😅

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 05/11/2021 22:59

Can I terrify you once a year too? (not once a year by the way. It's bonfire night, diwali and new years and the week leading up to it and the week after because people are dickheads).
amusedbush · 05/11/2021 23:01

@DeepaBeesKit

I always wonder where people live that they are hearing it "constantly".

I live in the south east. Heard about 5-10 mins of faint popping at 7.15. Nothing since. You could hardly hear what there was through the double glazing, if the tv had been on we wouldnt have heard it at all.

The east end of Glasgow, if you must know. They have been going here since about 6pm and, yes, it has been constant. It varies from a faint crackling to unholy bangs that make me jump out of my skin but it hasn't stopped. I'm currently in bed listening to a steady POP POP POP POP - it has been going for days, too.

Not that the date matters. People around here set them off when their team wins at football, to commemorate the death of someone, for days on end over bonfire night, new year... it doesn't end.

I have ASD and the noise has me on edge and my poor dog is terrified under the bed. He was completely desensitised and didn't blink at fireworks for the first 6 years of his life, then on NYE 2020 some utter fuckwit set some off on the pavement right outside our flat, in the middle of a built-up area. The room lit up like it was on fire, the noise was deafening and the poor thing has been scared stiff ever since.
