Aibu to find 17c too cold at home?

Apparently I'm crazy for finding 17c too cold.

I'm currently wearing a top, a hoodie and a big blanket/hoodie thing and I still have a cold nose.

Please tell me I'm not crazy and 17c is bloody cold to have it at home. What temp is your perfect temp at home in the evening?

I’m amazed that people would go out without a coat or just in a t shirt in 17degrees - that’s really not warm at all

Tigger85 · 02/11/2021 20:10

Thermostat is set to 16 degrees, I hate being hot, dp would set it to 20 but that is far too hot for me and causes big bills.

TheKeatingFive · 02/11/2021 20:10

20 is about right for me. 17 would be miserable.

Babyroobs · 02/11/2021 20:10

Ours is set at 20 and feels about right.

Walkaround · 02/11/2021 20:11

@TuftyMarmoset - no, I think it’s definitely more than just psychology, although I agree, psychology plays a part in wanting to feel cosier in the winter.

FairyBooms · 02/11/2021 20:11

I went out without a coat this morning. I did have a jumper and big scarf though. It was less than 8 degrees. I just don't feel the cold as much as most.

But 17C is warm to me. I hate anything above 18 usually.

Winterflower84 · 02/11/2021 20:11

With two young children ours is never below 20.5. I'd be freezing at 17! Would drink hot tea nonstop.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 02/11/2021 20:11

Mine was off all day and the thermostat said the temp was 16 degrees. I was working upstairs and had on a thin, silk thermal t-shirt, jeans and a sweatshirt. Socks and trainers. Felt comfortable.

Heating is now on & the temp is showing at 19 degrees. I’m in pj bottoms, vest top and a loose sweatshirt. Socks and Ugg boots. Am toasty warm!

I’ll turn it down again before bed - set it to come on if the temp drops below 15 degrees. Will have the bedroom window open a bit and a blanket over the (admittedly very warm, Hungarian goose down) duvet.

Lovey combo for me.

HappySonHappyMum · 02/11/2021 20:12

It's currently 17 in our house - haven't had any heating on and it was 2 degrees outside this morning when we got up. I absolutely point blank refuse to put the heating on during the day when it's only me working from home so I have furry slippers, a thick wollen blanket for my shoulders and wrist warmers to keep my fingers warm while I'm typing! We have an electric blanket on our bed for during the night. The kids are wearing more clothes and have blankets for the sofa in the evening. The bloody energy companies are going to get as little of my money as possible this winter!

myusernamewastakenbyme · 02/11/2021 20:12

My lounge thermostat says its 19.5c...i'm lovely and warm and would be uncomfortable with it any warmer.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 02/11/2021 20:13

I also went out minus a coat today. Outfit as above, with a Beanie and a scarf. Didn’t feel at all cold.

JetRocket · 02/11/2021 20:14

I’m generally chilly under 20. Pre kids we’d both wear jumpers and run around 18 but now we have a small toddler and a baby I’m breast feeding (boobs out constantly) we keep it between 20-22 all the time Grin much more civilised in my opinion

Lookwhoseinsideagain · 02/11/2021 20:14

I understand now why half of mumsnet users claim to spend daft sums like £500+ a month on heating!

Firstruleofsoupover · 02/11/2021 20:15

Middle of the Menny P here, (as Tom Allen might have it as he references the pandemic as the Panny D) and about 18 degrees C is good generally for both me and partner with extra jumper and or mittens ie fingerless gloves for me as needed. No heat at night required yet and windows open a little during the night.

Very thin tog single duvet at night for me, him on the other side has a higher tog. Curiously a long sleeved very thin top at night helps me get a good sleep. A single duvet for each of us with matching single covers. With a thin throw draped at the bottom of the bed (nice and thin, that a person could easily drag over themself if temporarily cold in the night) you would never know the difference in terms of how neat the bed looks in the daytime. Sorry OP you were not asking about night time temp management, I am aware - but after a couple of Danish holidays I realised how nice this separate two single duvets on a double bed arrangement was and just maybe someone reading has not considered this.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 02/11/2021 20:15

I'd absolutely die at 20 ! My heating is at 18.5 this evening and we are in pyjamas, I feel very comfortable. But we spend a lot of of time outside and down stables so it feels like a tropical island indoors compared !

Pinkfluffyunicornsandrainbows · 02/11/2021 20:16

I have mine on 20/21, 17 would be too cold for us.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 02/11/2021 20:16

In fact I'm so warm I'll be turning the heating down in a minute

LeniLemon · 02/11/2021 20:16

I went out without a coat this morning

As did I. I find as long as it's not really windy, it's perfectly fine in jumpers and joggers/jeans. I went to Tulleys Farm just recently and we were out until 12am there, I was in a long skirt, t shirt, jumper, plus light coat (the ones that don't do up at the front, fabric silly, a bit trenchy). I felt fine.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 02/11/2021 20:16

Oh I tell a lie, it's at 17.5

LeniLemon · 02/11/2021 20:17

Fabric usually... Some may say I was silly I suppose...Grin

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 02/11/2021 20:18

In fact I've only stopped wearing my summer sandals last week 😂

Firstruleofsoupover · 02/11/2021 20:18

Um I meant to say this is completely standard in Denmark, where I first saw the idea of two single duvets on one bed.

GreenOwl · 02/11/2021 20:18

I set my thermostat to 18°C but I haven't turned my heating on yet this year. It's currently 20.1°C in my house and didn't go below 18.5°C during the night so I don't need to turn it on yet.

FuzzyPuffling · 02/11/2021 20:18

Our house gets down to 8 or 9 degrees in the winter. That's quite cold.

YearsSinceISawYou · 02/11/2021 20:18

It used to be the case that if it fell to 16, schools and offices would have send people home. I don't know if that is still the case.

21 here...that's as high as it seems to go no matter what it's set to.
