Aibu to find 17c too cold at home?

Apparently I'm crazy for finding 17c too cold.

I'm currently wearing a top, a hoodie and a big blanket/hoodie thing and I still have a cold nose.

Please tell me I'm not crazy and 17c is bloody cold to have it at home. What temp is your perfect temp at home in the evening?

17-18 is what I put our house to. I find anything above is really stuff, but we have old thick cottage walls so I think the heat stays in.

tiredanddangerous · 02/11/2021 19:48

18 here.

Obecalp · 02/11/2021 19:48

If it was 17 degrees outside, I would wear a jumper and a light coat to go out. So why would it be comfortable to sit still inside with no coat on at that temp?

Well, to answer that, I don't wear a coat at all in 17 degrees outside.

Notcontent · 02/11/2021 19:49

For most people around 20 degrees is good for living areas where you are going to be mainly sitting around and not doing physical work. Around 18 degrees is good for bedrooms if you are just going to be sleeping in the bedroom.

I know some people say to just put on another layer but it’s really not the same!

I'd be out in a t shirt or a sundress in 17c weather!

MGMidget · 02/11/2021 19:51

17 is too cold for me, except when I was a student many years ago and lived in a house with no central heating. In reality wrapping up warm indoors can achieve a reasonable level of comfort if you cant afford a bigger heating bill and are young and fit, not elderly or frail! However, it doesnt feel homely, more like putting on a brave face in the circumstances!

FangsForTheMemory · 02/11/2021 19:52

My thermostat is at 19C. That's comfortable to me.

BoredtoTiers · 02/11/2021 19:53

It'd be too cold for me to sit around in a t-shirt and I'd probably get cold hands and feet.

We set ours at 21 here, but to be honest so much depends on the wind / draughts. Nice sunny, still day and my home office is toasty, the heating doesn't even kick in and I have a window cracked (in Scotland, in November).

Bit gusty and the thermostat might claim it's 21 (in that exact spot, it probably is), but I'd be sticking the fire on if sitting around in my north facing livingroom.

SophieHatterPendragon · 02/11/2021 19:54

16-17 is my perfect! 18-19 is warm for me. Anything over 20 is like a sauna. I hate the heating tho always have done since I was a child. Triggers my migraines too.

My DH has learnt to put layers on if he’s cold and my kids are like me but everyone tells me I’m weird. I’m happy to be weird

Sexnotgender · 02/11/2021 19:54

Fascinated by the people with thermostat set to 22/23! That’s roasting.

My living room is currently 18 and perfectly cosy. I’m under a blanket but I’ve been ill all day😫

House is cool overall though.

rhowton · 02/11/2021 19:55

20c is ok if I have a blanket on me and the door slightly closed to the living room. Ideally I'd have 22c but our heating bill would be huge!

Goneback2school · 02/11/2021 19:56

We've just moved to a house with air to water under floor heating and I can't get the hang of the thermostat at all... Had to get the plumber back to fix it in one of the rooms but now in that room it's reading at 16 degrees while the room next to it is reading at 21. I don't know if the first thermostat is broken but it feels the same temp in both rooms. The thermostat is actually set to come on at 18 all over the house which is fine for us.

Chloemol · 02/11/2021 19:56

Mines set to 18. This time of year I sometimes turn it off

But 17 is too cold

KaleJuicer · 02/11/2021 19:57

This is why we have a climate crisis.

But I am also biased as I'm from NZ where homes are generally unheated - or you just heat the room you're in with a space heater or oil heater or log fire. Last time I was out in NZ in winter I took a room thermometer as I had a small baby and was interested. Bedrooms in my family home were 7 degrees at night (!!!!) and living areas 14 degrees during the day. People just wear more layers!

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 02/11/2021 19:58

Our thermostat is set to 20. 17 would be too cold to be properly comfortable.

PurBal · 02/11/2021 20:01

17-18 is fine for sleep. But 20 is my preference.

ballroompink · 02/11/2021 20:02

17 would feel chilly to me. Yesterday it was 18 in my house during the day and it's ok if you're moving around but I was sat working at my desk all day and felt too cold. If sat still working I find 19-20 better. Over 20 is too warm though.

SpinachIsAGatewayDrug · 02/11/2021 20:03

18c during the day.
20c first thing in the morning and during the evening.
Off overnight.

That's how we do it Smile

Walkaround · 02/11/2021 20:05

I start to feel cold at about 18c at this time of year - not cold in the summer and early autumn at that temp, but despite what the thermostat claims, the colder it is outside, the colder the air feels inside the house at 18c. By midwinter, having the thermostat set to 20c is just about bearable, but definitely feels colder than if set to 20c in October (when 20c feels a bit too warm….). This may just be because the room spends less time actually at the thermostat set temperature in the winter than in the autumn as it cools down faster before the heating has to crank up again, but I think it’s more than that, whether subtle drafts of cooler air swirling around each room but the overall temperature being 20c or what, I’m not completely sure!

Angelik · 02/11/2021 20:06

@KaleJuicer exactly what I was thinking. More layers and more moving. Planning on teaching kids the art of undressing/washing/dressing without at any point being naked!

SirChenjins · 02/11/2021 20:06

22 here - I like a warm house. I try not to have the heating on throughout the house too much though, so use a heated throw when I’m wfh. One of my best purchases ever.

TuftyMarmoset · 02/11/2021 20:08

@Walkaround from the various threads on MN I am increasingly wondering if there is a psychological element.

UltimateBugKilla · 02/11/2021 20:08

17 does start to feel chilly if you sitting still, ours is set to 20, when we turn it on.

WhatIsThisPlease · 02/11/2021 20:08

Mine is set for 20 through the day. It comes on in a morning at 22 and it goes to 22 at tea time when everyone comes in.

20 is still too cold for me so I have a heater in my office. 17 is practically outdoor temperatures!!!! 🥶

Lynne1Cat · 02/11/2021 20:08

The heating in our house is at 20, 22 degrees. There's no point in even having it on at all unless it's anything less!
