Apparently I'm crazy for finding 17c too cold.

I'm currently wearing a top, a hoodie and a big blanket/hoodie thing and I still have a cold nose.

Please tell me I'm not crazy and 17c is bloody cold to have it at home. What temp is your perfect temp at home in the evening?

I went out in leggings and hoodie it was apparently 10c but I was moving walking didn’t feel cold till I stood still at home though just sitting it’s cold at 18c. My house is currently 19.1c and has had the heating on for 30 minutes today according to hive.

sbhydrogen · 02/11/2021 20:20

We haven't got any radiators at the moment (decorating) and our house is generally about 16–17°C. It's so cold. We bought humidity sensors for each room, and it's 75% relative humidity in our bedroom, meaning it is FREEZING and nothing dries. Once our radiators go back on (hopefully tomorrow!) I'll set it to about 20°C 😌

The previous owners of this house had the thermostat at 25°C to come on from 5am til 11pm. I dread to think how much money they spent on their gas bill...

TuftyMarmoset · 02/11/2021 20:22

Genuinely bewildered by 17 being considered freezing. In England the average high temperature is 15 in May and 18 in June.

TupilaLilium · 02/11/2021 20:22

We just turned it up to 18 today and I am still freezing with three layers and a blanket.

laidbacklife · 02/11/2021 20:23

Really depends how well your house retains warmth. But 17 degrees would be quite chilly anywhere I’d imagine!

Dominicains · 02/11/2021 20:23

I live in a well insulated new build and the temp rarely drops below 18 but I do think my living room is a lot colder than the rest of the house (therm is in the hall) so end up clicking it on to 22 just so I feel comfortable - but the rest of the house becomes too hot. Might get a little heater for the living room so I don’t end up spending a fortune heating one room sufficiently and the rest of the house unnecessarily.

BarkminsterBlue · 02/11/2021 20:23

Gosh, you have your houses warm. Our Hive is set to 18.5°C max.

Chelyanne · 02/11/2021 20:24

Our thermostat is set 17/18, smart meter thingy says it's 20/21 though.
If I have been out and about my hands and feet feel like ice to touch no matter what I wear, hubby is always too warm at home but then will have his room at work around 10-12.

itsallgoingpearshaped · 02/11/2021 20:24

It's too cold.

And women feel changes in temperatures more acutely then men anyway, so YANBU to insist on 20C inside.

I wouldn’t say 17 is freezing but it’s not exactly warm - and certainly not t-shirt or sundress weather
Walkaround · 02/11/2021 20:25

Interestingly, I do like it quite a lot cooler overnight - my ideal is somewhere between 20 and 21 during the day in winter (but generally have it a degree colder than the temp I find most comfortable, as 19-20 isn’t too bad), but will happily have it go down to about 15c overnight - by 14c I occasionally wake up with a cold face, as that’s outside the duvet! Fortunately, in a normal winter, the house temp doesn’t normally get as low as 14c overnight. I never have the heating on at night, and like the upstairs bedrooms to be cooler than the downstairs rooms during the day, too, as I like an excuse to have a hot water bottle!

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 02/11/2021 20:25

@Obecalp

If it was 17 degrees outside, I would wear a jumper and a light coat to go out. So why would it be comfortable to sit still inside with no coat on at that temp?

Well, to answer that, I don't wear a coat at all in 17 degrees outside.

Indeed, 17' is summer weather !
KingsleyShacklebolt · 02/11/2021 20:26

We have ours on 20c so yes, 17 would feel cold.

This whole idea that it's virtuous to sit and shiver wrapped in hoodies and blankets, and that there's some sort of prize for holding off putting on the heating for the longest - craziness.

Benjispruce5 · 02/11/2021 20:26

House is on 18. If sitting I’ll put the fire on in living room but prefer bedrooms cool.

I know! I'm in the pub beer garden with flip flops on when it's 17!!

minervas1 · 02/11/2021 20:29

Our thermostat is set to 12! I feel like I must be a natural Eskimo reading these posts Blush

DDMAC · 02/11/2021 20:30

Ours is currently set to 18 but with insulation the thermostat says 21. Dh complains that he’s cold, but he won’t wear a jumper in the house, likes walking around in a light short sleeved shirt which is ridiculous in my opinion.

Throckmorton · 02/11/2021 20:32

Set to 20 during the day and 16 at night. I doubt it goes down to 16 though

Well I think given that gas fired central heating accounts for 30% of UK emissions then yes, we are being more virtuous.
ivykaty44 · 02/11/2021 20:34

my thermostat is set at 17 degrees. Its an open plan home, cavity wall insulation and the attic has maximum insulation.

Its toasty here with a rug over my legs on the sofa and im in a dressing gown with a toasty warm nose - hands and feet

The heating was on for 3 hours and has now turned off - but the house will stay warm until bedtime

In a new build it should be fine as they come well insulated with double glazing etc

LeniLemon · 02/11/2021 20:34

I simply prefer warming up through layers and blankets than I do warming up from warm air. I find warm air really stuffy and oppressive. I don't want a prize. We are just built differently and have different preferences Confused

Walkaround · 02/11/2021 20:34

@DaphneDeloresMoorhead - I don’t think it’s virtuous if you feel the cold less, it’s just fortuitous.

Cattoes · 02/11/2021 20:35

My house is 15c at the moment, I've lit the stove to get it hopefully to 17. Anything above 18 though I find unbearable. I mainly heat the house to stop it getting damp.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/11/2021 20:36

12c Shock Isn't that the temperature that you leave an empty house ticking over at in the winter so the pipes don't burst?

San141 · 02/11/2021 20:36

My temp..until I override is set at 6°!! We have extra layers and are out most of the time! It's then food, bath and bed, all warm the house up!!
