Cups used once don't go in the dishwasher!

I have family down. It's raining. So endless cups of tea are in order. However, one member of the family likes whisking cups away the instant you put them down and puts them in the dishwasher. Then another clean mug is used for the next round of tea, even though it is the same four people drinking it and all have personal, identifiable mugs. And obviously once whisked away and put in the dishwasher not everyone remembers their own mug so you can't get them out again. Also risks offending the person 'helping'. Now the dishwasher is running and my extensive mug collection is taking up all the space. So drinking out of a 'non mug' vessel and have to do the actual washing up in another lot.
I know this is a first world problem, just thankful I actually have a dishwasher otherwise I would have to do two lots of washing up by hand.

Aibu? Or just a wee bit precious.
Yabu: It's normal to get a new mug for each refill.
YAnbu: whisking is unnecessary and fussing.

We use the same mug for a day. Unless switching from coffee to hot chocolate (for example).

Sparklingbrook · 29/10/2021 20:26

I have a new mug for every drink. Just my preference. We have a dishwasher and a lot of mugs.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 29/10/2021 20:28

I don't like using recycled cups....nasty habit...also have a dishwasher and too many mugs.

Dh doesn't care...but knows not to reuse mine. :o

HeddaGarbled · 29/10/2021 20:28

Ha, this is my marriage in an AIBU. I’m for a clean mug every time, his are permanently stained from multiple uses.

Quickchangeartiste · 29/10/2021 20:28

I am definitely in the - fresh drink fresh mug category, but there’s only 2 of us, I have a lot of mugs, a different am ho,e alone most of the day.
Would not be so fussy with my in-laws 🤷🏻‍♀️

TinaYouFatLard · 29/10/2021 20:29

I like a fresh mug each round.

Davros · 29/10/2021 20:30

One mug per day. I only drink tea

LavenderAskew · 29/10/2021 20:30

I would for me but not for guests unless filling from a pot.

I never realised i had mug rules

dudsville · 29/10/2021 20:30

Both positions are OK. Speak with one another.

Chocolatewheatos · 29/10/2021 20:30

Depends how soon. I'm not drinking out if a mug that's had a warm milky drink sat stagnant in it for 2hrs. If the mugs still warm then it's a fair refill.

AosSi · 29/10/2021 20:31

I think it's fine to reuse if you're brewing again right away. However, I wouldn't want to use the same mug all day...would rather just stick it in the dishwasher. I have a lot of mugs, might as well use them up. Grin

junebirthdaygirl · 29/10/2021 20:31

Oh no..fresh mug each time unless you are just topping up from the teapot. Sometimes people say..no need for a clean mug this one is fine but l stick them in the dishwasher and take out fresh ones. What about the cold tea at the bottom??

DuploSubmarine · 29/10/2021 20:32

Oh I use a new cup for every hot drink! I find it a bit grim otherwise. Each to their own though. DH reuses his. I don't think it's weird fo whisk and put in dishwasher. It keeps things tidy.

AosSi · 29/10/2021 20:32

Although yes, I wouldn't reuse mugs for guests unless using a teapot! Though that might vary depending on guest. The ones I'm more familiar with, maybe...cos they'd probably be up brewing their own cuppa in the kitchen.

321zyx · 29/10/2021 20:33

One mug per day here.

FelicityBeedle · 29/10/2021 20:33

@Chocolatewheatos
You tip out the last drop of tea when you finish, rinse if you’re fussy and use it again.

TheMagicDeckchair · 29/10/2021 20:33

It depends. If you make a pot of tea, then refills from that round are fine.

If you’re putting the kettle on again and making a fresh round then I always use clean cups. I dislike stained mugs, it feels unclean.

I would hand wash a mug if the rest were all in the dishwasher rather than reuse.

EatYourVegetables · 29/10/2021 20:34

Careful! This is MN. In about 2 posts someone will come along to tell you that you should either Zooflora or bin your china cup after use and use a brand new one for every drink and anything else is “grim”.

But here in the real world yes of course you should reuse mugs, it’s a waste of water and energy not to, and it’s becoming clear we don’t have infinite supply of either.

I’m in the “mug a day unless switching drinks” camp.

HereWeGoAgains · 29/10/2021 20:34

I do this! New mug with every hot drink. We do only run the dishwasher once a day though, so it doesn’t really make a difference.

EvilRingahBitch · 29/10/2021 20:35

What do you mean "what about the cold tea at the bottom?"? What kind of monster doesn't finish their brew?

Libertaire · 29/10/2021 20:35

YANBU.

My favourite big tea mug isn’t properly seasoned until it has had at least 3 good strong brews made in it. It’s the tannins coating the surface which give the tea its depth of flavour.

EatYourVegetables · 29/10/2021 20:35

My mistake!! The “grim” comment already happened while I was typing my post. I way undershot there.

thecombineharvester · 29/10/2021 20:36

Reuse the mug and rinse quickly under the tap between uses! In case there are any dregs or whatever.

whatatool · 29/10/2021 20:36

But.....but.......how do you get a fresh mug every time when everyone knows that no matter how many mugs you have, everyone has their favourite??

AdoptedBumpkin · 29/10/2021 20:36

I generally use cups 2/3 times, but will wash dirty dishes once per day.
