Cups used once don't go in the dishwasher!

I have family down. It's raining. So endless cups of tea are in order. However, one member of the family likes whisking cups away the instant you put them down and puts them in the dishwasher. Then another clean mug is used for the next round of tea, even though it is the same four people drinking it and all have personal, identifiable mugs. And obviously once whisked away and put in the dishwasher not everyone remembers their own mug so you can't get them out again. Also risks offending the person 'helping'. Now the dishwasher is running and my extensive mug collection is taking up all the space. So drinking out of a 'non mug' vessel and have to do the actual washing up in another lot.
I know this is a first world problem, just thankful I actually have a dishwasher otherwise I would have to do two lots of washing up by hand.

Aibu? Or just a wee bit precious.
Yabu: It's normal to get a new mug for each refill.
YAnbu: whisking is unnecessary and fussing.

Oh @ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba that’s awful I’m sorry you were put through that. Flowers
I read today that they aren’t going to sit on the roads any more but will walk into the traffic instead. Hmm

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 29/10/2021 22:31

I don't understand why people are so focused on rinsing being a 2-second job.
who cares?
2 seconds or 2 minutes - it doesn't matter.
I just want it clean & dry from the cupboard because that's what I like. period.

HarrisMcCoo · 29/10/2021 22:31

Inertia if I am already boiling the kettle for a cup of tea then it's not wasted is it🤦🏻 we are talking a few teaspoons of water to swirl around. Nothing to get worked up about 😬

StormyCornishSeas · 29/10/2021 22:31

I rinse a mug and repeat for the day the dishwasher

tapdancingmum · 29/10/2021 22:32

I don't use a new mug if I'm drinking tea all day but I may have a new mug depending on what time I'm drinking it. I have different mugs for different occasions so if I want a quick cup of tea I'll use that mug, if I want a huge cup of tea I'll use that one and if I want to dunk biscuits I'll use that one.

Anybody else in the household can use any of the other mugs but best not to use mine 😂

HarrisMcCoo · 29/10/2021 22:32

@Inertia

The OP mentioned guests , and not knowing whose cup was whose once they’d been moved. I wouldn’t be keen to drink from someone else’s barely-rinsed mug.
Keeps your immune system tip top, if anything 😂
BelleOfTheProvince · 29/10/2021 22:34

Not knowing because they plough through mugs.
If each pot you stick to your mug then it's reasonable to remember if your mugs are sufficiently different. As mine are. Four people. Four colours. Easy.
Four people, ok not three tea drinkers, 18 mugs(yes I counted!) Three pots. Excessive.

One advantage of Covid was being able to take my own travel cup with my own tea in it when visiting people without it looking rude. 😀
No being given drinks in mugs swilled under the cold tap for a second.

BelleOfTheProvince · 29/10/2021 22:37

Also due to excessive amount of mugs used I had to resort to the gravy vessel.
Not ideal.

@Sparklingbrook

thank you.

and wtaf? walking into traffic? that's not environmental, that's just mental.
and sounds like a cult.

Oh such a fun thread to read! I drink coffee prob. 4 a day and maybe a cup of tea once a week so I have loads of mugs but use one particular one for coffee just for me nobody else used it Grin I also use it all day with just a rinse between coffees although I do have a really good heat retaining cafetiere which I get a couple of cups from so probably don't rinse cup until a fresh cafetiere! If I did drink tea I'd get a different mug but definitely wouldn't get fresh mugs for people Grin
And I have the same glass all day for water. And we've a ton of mugs Grin

lisaandalan · 29/10/2021 22:47

Fresh cups. X

imnottoofussed · 29/10/2021 22:49

I'm in the one mug per day camp. I do swill it out under the cold tap between each drink but no point actually washing it or getting a fresh mug out. I don't have a dishwasher though so maybe I'd feel differently if I did but can't imagine so.

DappyApple · 29/10/2021 22:50

We use a clean one each time, but only for the fact that I don’t drink tea /coffee/hot chocolate (so don’t use the mugs) it’s rare that dh will have more than one in a day and dd only has hot chocolate (with milk) always leaves a bit in the bottom thats left to go cold before bringing cup down so wouldn’t re-use anyway. But having said that she doesn’t drink it regularly.

My mum and dad are the only ones who drink a lot of tea, they always tell me to reuse the same cup, I’ll rinse it first though!

But if we were all regular mug users then yes I’d rinse and reuse throughout the day and Chuck the in dishwasher at night.

Xmasbaby11 · 29/10/2021 22:54

Yabu. Dh reuses his mug several times and I find it grim. I have lots of lovely mugs! I do also tend to switch between coffee and a couple of types of tea so reusing wouldn't work. We have a dishwasher.

Undertheoldlindentree · 29/10/2021 23:00

A fresh mug every time unless drinking another in quick succession/the same sitting. A leisurely breakfast say.

Once read about someone who had regular sore throats - they stopped when she switched to a clean mug for every drink.

GiltEdges · 29/10/2021 23:01

@HeddaGarbled

Ha, this is my marriage in an AIBU. I’m for a clean mug every time, his are permanently stained from multiple uses.
Mine too Grin
MagicalFish · 29/10/2021 23:04

My mum does this. She and dad drink copious amounts of tea and have a fresh cup every time. At home they have about 3 billion mugs. We don't. So she ends up putting our dishwasher - containing nothing but mugs - on after every couple of rounds of drinks. So wasteful.

nordica · 29/10/2021 23:10

New mug every time here. I use the same glass all day for cold drinks though, it's the milk in the hot drinks that makes reusing a mug feel wrong.

GoingForAWalk · 29/10/2021 23:13

Mmmm

I'll use the same cup twice for a second cup of tea or coffee within a couple of hours otherwise it goes in the dishwasher

I have sugar in coffee so would never have tea in the same cup after.

I don't have sugar in tea so might use the same cup for coffee later on after rinsing under tap.

I generally can no longer keep up though with who's used what mug and what for so I often just sweep it all up and put in dishwasher

boon · 29/10/2021 23:14

Fresh cups each time here.

Hankunamatata · 29/10/2021 23:15

It's why mum got a tea pot again so she could just top up in the sitting room

GoingForAWalk · 29/10/2021 23:22

I do have favourite mugs for tea and coffee but DD has no sense of ownership so I've got over the 'it's my personal mug back off' because life's too short and DD doesn't give a crap that that's my special first cup of tea in the morning mug GrinHmm

I do have a hierarchy of favourite mugs which have magical properties making my tea or coffee taste that much better ConfusedGrinBlush

TheGoogleMum · 29/10/2021 23:35

One mug all day! Otherwise way too much washing up. Tricky situation though when someone thinks they are being helpful

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 29/10/2021 23:41

Can’t believe people wash the cup after just one brew! I keep a cup on the go for a good few cups of tea, but will switch to a new one eventually. Mind you I drink a lot of tea!
