Cups used once don't go in the dishwasher!

I have family down. It's raining. So endless cups of tea are in order. However, one member of the family likes whisking cups away the instant you put them down and puts them in the dishwasher. Then another clean mug is used for the next round of tea, even though it is the same four people drinking it and all have personal, identifiable mugs. And obviously once whisked away and put in the dishwasher not everyone remembers their own mug so you can't get them out again. Also risks offending the person 'helping'. Now the dishwasher is running and my extensive mug collection is taking up all the space. So drinking out of a 'non mug' vessel and have to do the actual washing up in another lot.
I know this is a first world problem, just thankful I actually have a dishwasher otherwise I would have to do two lots of washing up by hand.

Aibu? Or just a wee bit precious.
Yabu: It's normal to get a new mug for each refill.
YAnbu: whisking is unnecessary and fussing.

How does reusing the mug work with lipstick wearing?

BelleOfTheProvince · 29/10/2021 20:37

To be fair the whisking mostly annoys me as I am preoccupied with toddler and my half drunk tea is not locatable when I go back to it. The same with plates when I am going back for seconds but my plate is whisked away and I have to get another one out. I've got a reasonable amount of crockery but not endless.
We're talking two pr three my each for two successive pots.

We reuse cups for a day and then they get washed. Although yesterday I misplaced my cup and had to get a fresh one. Found it on my bedroom windowsill later Grin

@EatYourVegetables

My mistake!! The “grim” comment already happened while I was typing my post. I way undershot there.
It was meeeeeeeeee!!!!

No shame, no surrender. Give me a fresh mug or give me death!

Starcaller · 29/10/2021 20:39

Surely you just empty out any remnants and give it a quick rinse? Not just pour tea on top of cold dregs.

I agree, OP, I think it's pretty wasteful and unnecessary. And it's annoying when the dishwasher is filled with mugs and you can't fit your normal stuff in.

Firesidefox · 29/10/2021 20:39

Clean mug every time unless you're literally having another cup of tea the minute you finish the first.

topcat2014 · 29/10/2021 20:39

I never use the same cup at home but use one mug for a week at work!

Helps you identify yours ;)

If there were lipstick marks I'd give the mugs a quick wash in the sink. Sometimes might even do this between rounds anyway. But putting them all in the dishwasher every time seems like a waste of space and time!

Oh yuck. That's horrible.

I remain on Team Fresh Mug Every Drink. Grin

TheCanyon · 29/10/2021 20:44

I use my mug all day, only wash it out properly with fairy if it has coffee scum at the bottom that doesn't come off with 5 rinses. A guest in my home I'd rinse out their mug and reuse it if totally different mugs and used quickly yeah.

But you say,
even though it is the same four people drinking it and all have personal, identifiable mugs

And

not everyone remembers their own mug so you can't get them out again

So which is it?

Singinghollybob · 29/10/2021 20:47

I use the same cup but I'll pour any old tea out and give it a quick wash/rinse and reuse.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 29/10/2021 20:47

1 mug all day, only change when I make my hot chocolate at night. There's nothing left in the bottom of my mug to tip away. Anyone whisking away half finished cups or plates would be firmly told to stop.

BelleOfTheProvince · 29/10/2021 20:47

As in , stick to one mug Oh mine is the black
Several mugs used no one remembers. Also, you remember when you are collecting because you equate the mug with the 'order'.
Eg black, sugar no milk. Etc.

Oh definitely a clean mug for each drink. Even if I wash it in the sink and dry, that's fine. I always leave the end of my coffee so would not put fresh coffee on top. My brother and sil drink tea, they always use the same cup, sometimes they just take it off the counter and pour fresh stuff on top. One time they were smelling the milk thinking it was off as there was floaty white bits in their tea but turned out the cup was re used from breakfast and had tea in the end of it and this was about 7pm when I called in. Their cups have brown rings inside, some are so brown that it looks like the colour of the inside of the cup is brown. They just rinse under tap and leave draining. It's fucking grim, I never take drinks off them.

yourestandingonmyneck · 29/10/2021 20:48

Can't believe the amount of people requiring a new mug for each drink Confused

Can you not just rinse it out in the sink?

One mug per day for me. Even if I'm switching between tea / coffee. I give it a quick rinse in the sink so I really can't see the issue.

TravelLost · 29/10/2021 20:49

Ha ha ha

Endless discussion in our house about that.
I’m team reuse, esp as I’m picky about which mug I’m using so I’m for ever reminding people to NOT put my mug in the dishwasher.
Dcs dint have hot drinks and find that crazy.
DH uses his maybe twice and the puts it in the dishwasher.

We are forever at odds with each other 😂😂

BelleOfTheProvince · 29/10/2021 20:50

Not adverse to a rinse under the tap.
The whisker doesn't allow me the opportunity.

No, I want a nice squeaky clean mug with no lipstick on I don't like the sound of a quick rinse in the sink.

That said I probably have 3 hot drinks a day tops when at home, so it's only 3 mugs. The dishwasher gets run when it's full.

Gladioli23 · 29/10/2021 20:52

I use a new mug for each drink mainly, but if there is a big group we all reuse mugs all day as otherwise the dishwasher gets too full.

So YA neither BU nor NBU.

NigellaSeed · 29/10/2021 20:52

I would hate this too! One mug per day.

I also hate when guests hand wash things when I have a dishwasher it's messes up my whole system

hah...MIL is the absolute Queen of this...I torture her by making a cup last ages, and I keep putting it down, and she'll always ask if I am finished, I always say no, even if I am!

Doesn't matter where she is either....in her own home or someone elses. She's all over the cups until they are gathered in safely.

Sparklingbrook · 29/10/2021 20:53

Just give it a rinse in the sink

If a quick rinse gets lipstick off then it's time to change the lipstick.
