Cups used once don't go in the dishwasher!

I have family down. It's raining. So endless cups of tea are in order. However, one member of the family likes whisking cups away the instant you put them down and puts them in the dishwasher. Then another clean mug is used for the next round of tea, even though it is the same four people drinking it and all have personal, identifiable mugs. And obviously once whisked away and put in the dishwasher not everyone remembers their own mug so you can't get them out again. Also risks offending the person 'helping'. Now the dishwasher is running and my extensive mug collection is taking up all the space. So drinking out of a 'non mug' vessel and have to do the actual washing up in another lot.
I know this is a first world problem, just thankful I actually have a dishwasher otherwise I would have to do two lots of washing up by hand.

Aibu? Or just a wee bit precious.
Yabu: It's normal to get a new mug for each refill.
YAnbu: whisking is unnecessary and fussing.

If I'm having drinks close together which I generally do in the morning, I'll use the same cup and just rinse with a little water from the kettle but if the cup has been lying for a while, then I'll use a fresh.
What bugs me is oh will take away one of my preferred mugs and replace it with a new one but use one of the mugs I really don't like.

HarrisMcCoo · 29/10/2021 21:14

DH and I are both one mug per day types.

It's just an absolute nuisance when people get a new one each time!

LolaSmiles · 29/10/2021 21:18

I'm a middle ground type.
If I'm having a couple of drinks in close succession then I'll rinse the mug and reuse it. I'd not use my morning coffee mug for a mid afternoon cup of tea though.

The problem with family visits is they easily become hot beverage consumption days, which if a fresh mug is used each time is a huge waste of water in the dishwasher.

YesILikeItToo · 29/10/2021 21:19

I remember when dishwashers were coming in. Part of the process my mother undertook in order to have one, apart from saving up, was getting more dishes. In particular, it struck me that she bought a second bowl for her Magimix. Makes me think of the other name for a dishwasher - ‘the dirty dishes cupboard’

Etinoxaurus · 29/10/2021 21:20

I use rinse and reuse if I’m home alone. Good 7/8 drinks a day. But when there’s a houseful it all goes in the dishwasher, particularly atm. Last Christmas an in-law 😉 drove me round pottering around with her special cup when I was trying to keep everything as clean as possible.

Etinoxaurus · 29/10/2021 21:21

I do have 20 mugs though. And a set of 8 christmas mugs Blush

ProcrastinationIsMySuperPower · 29/10/2021 21:22

I work from home, and drink a lot of tea... I tend to use the same mug all day, but I'll slosh it out with a bit of boiling water before I make a fresh brew.
Visitors always get fresh mugs though.

santabetterwashhishands · 29/10/2021 21:22

Fresh cup for every drink is what we all do in this house🤷‍♀️

TillyDevon · 29/10/2021 21:22

I had no idea anyone uses a mug for whole day! I use several and love my different favourites but also having them clean each time (probably unnecessary I now realise!)

BarbaraofSeville · 29/10/2021 21:23

Put the whisker awayer on washing up and brew duty seeing as it's either your MIL, DM, SIL or DSis Wink

When the mugs run out, just say loudly 'well I would make you all another brew but we seem to have run out of mugs' and then start talking about Christmas or Wendy Wu being chased by kangaroos or anything else at all except jumping up to start managing the hot drink receptacle issue.

hullaballoo19 · 29/10/2021 21:24

Depends how long between drinks. I'd say roughly an hour, any longer and I'll use a fresh cup (also use fresh if changing from coffee to tea for example). I stick with one water glass all day though.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/10/2021 21:25

Sorry, the golfer who got chased by kangaroos is called Wendy Powick not Wendy Wu, I wasn't listening properly when it was on the news the other day.

5128gap · 29/10/2021 21:25

Same all day, sometimes two after a rinse in the morning. I only drink black coffee with no sugar though. My colleagues also hand over their used mugs all day for refill when we do drinks rounds. No one has ever asked for a fresh one.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 29/10/2021 21:26

This is one of the reasons I have a fresh cup every time:
here we have tea, coffee, hot chocolate, peach tea and Fanta, all of which I drank on the same day but I was swapping between them. (I also had a bottle of water on the floor out of shot)

It maybe strange for neurotypical people but when I showed it in my ADHD group I had an overwhelming response of "wow, I thought only I did this!"🤣

Cups used once don't go in the dishwasher!
BrilliantBetty · 29/10/2021 21:31

Clean mug each time, unless there is a tea pot on the table and it's a refill situation. But i'd give it a rinse even then.

starfishmummy · 29/10/2021 21:33

Just hide the excess mugs, keep out one per person only. Then people can wash their own in the sink believe next rew if they want a clean one.

Sweettea1 · 29/10/2021 21:37

Can people not just give there mug a quick wash b4 reusing? Takes a few seconds when kettle is boiling 🤔

tigger1001 · 29/10/2021 21:38

I use the same mug all day. Love that mug. Just give it a rinse when waiting for the kettle to boil,

We don't have a dishwasher though and bugger having a load of mugs waiting to be washed.

Benjispruce4 · 29/10/2021 21:39

Always a fresh mug.

closedown · 29/10/2021 21:39

@junebirthdaygirl

Oh no..fresh mug each time unless you are just topping up from the teapot. Sometimes people say..no need for a clean mug this one is fine but l stick them in the dishwasher and take out fresh ones. What about the cold tea at the bottom??
LMAO obviously you tip out the old tea and rinse the cup out with tap water between uses Grin
NeverDropYourMoonCup · 29/10/2021 21:45

Mugs should be rinsed after each use and washed properly at the end of the day. I wish DP could grasp this.

However, his mother doesn't even wait for you to finish drinking before she's got her hand out to take it away. And as DP doesn't just wave a smartprice teabag at the cup from a distance of roughly 3 nautical miles and actually let's you drink it unmolested, I suppose out of the two, suffering a stained/unwashed mug in the morning is the lesser evil.

limitedperiodonly · 29/10/2021 21:46

I have a favourite mug whose size, shape and thickness guarantees me a perfect cup of coffee. It's the only mug of its kind in my house. It just requires rinsing until the end of the day when I will wash it. I wash it so if it breaks it will be my fault, not anyone else's. If some bloody neat freak took it away and gave me another one we would have words.

If I'm at someone else's house I often don't ask for a second cup of coffee because I don't like their cups. Often I drink the first on sufferance. Most people don't understand the importance of a good cup or mug. I am far too polite to say this but I silently judge them.

limitedperiodonly · 29/10/2021 21:52

I have a second-favourite mug I take on holiday with me because I couldn't bear it if I broke my favourite one. I also take my favourite teaspoon because it is the right size and is not made of cheap stainless steel. That is something else people fail to understand.

MrsTumbletap · 29/10/2021 21:55

Clean mugs every time
Laundry loads each day
20 minute showers
Aaarghh all these wasteful habits!

Do people not see the connection with wasteful habits and climate change? Do you not see how they are linked?

For heavens sake rinse your cup out and use a sponge to remove any lipstick/dregs/stains it take seconds and doesn't require heating a dishwasher to 30 degrees for an hour!

JudgeJ · 29/10/2021 21:58

@CoffeeRunner

We use the same mug for a day. Unless switching from coffee to hot chocolate (for example).
I love to have my morning coffee in my choclaty evening before mug!
