I couldn't find my umbrella so decided on buying one off FB marketplace.
Found a nice Joules one for £15 and asked to buy it.
At 09.12 am had the conversation via messenger and agreed to buy. She said it would be on the doorstep and put the money through the letterbox. Fine by me.

I asked what time was convenient and she replied no later than 12.15 as she was going out and gave me the address. I said I would be there at 12.
At 11am I found my umbrella (DH had it) so messaged her at 11.12 am to apologise and say I didn't need it after all, but thank you very much.
She replied
Is this a joke I have changed my plans plus taken item off eBay!!!?
I am fuming Angry reported and informed police as you have our address plus our plans!! Very odd

It was literally 2 hours so why take it off eBay? She hadn't changed her plans and why that level of aggression?

Was I really being as unreasonable as she says? Genuinely confused!

You were totally in the wrong how can you not see that?

Lalastepmum · 28/10/2021 18:51

Tbh I rather you message and say I won’t be coming rather than a no show. Which happens endlessly on Fb.
She is unreasonable

LetHimHaveIt · 28/10/2021 18:52

I'd've bought it anyway, frankly. I think you've behaved badly and seem very nonchalant about it.

She's gone OTT, though.

Sneezecakesmama · 28/10/2021 18:53

I totally accept it can be annoying, which is why I apologised rather than simply not turning up and wasting her time. I could have done that and been a total arse.

I give lots of stuff away locally on freecycle and people often don't turn up or message. I don't really mind.

I get the eBay thing now, but its simple to relist and costs nothing.
You'd think I'd strangled her cat.
It was a lovely umbrella actually and I wish I had collected it, but I am trying to reduce my carbon footprint and not buy unecessary stuff.

whatnumber · 28/10/2021 18:53

This is the reason I only send my door number to people when they have messaged to say they are leaving and on their way to collect.

furbabymama87 · 28/10/2021 18:54

I hate being messed around on those selling sites as people do take the piss, but informing the police is insane.

Chloemol · 28/10/2021 18:55

You are a time waster. You should have bought it

StaplesCorner · 28/10/2021 18:55

I can't see why you can't see you were unreasonable so she's entitled to a bit of a rant. You were a total arse!

Sneezecakesmama · 28/10/2021 18:55

@Jamallama

Is it FB or eBay? You can't seem to make your mind up
I was buying it on FB. She'd obviously also listed it on ebay, which I knew nothing about. Thought that would be obvious?

SoupDragon · 28/10/2021 18:57

How would you have felt if you'd turned up and she said she'd sold it to someone else?

Whinge · 28/10/2021 18:58

It was a lovely umbrella actually and I wish I had collected it, but I am trying to reduce my carbon footprint and not buy unecessary stuff.

Confused It's a second hand umbrella. You were fine with buying it until 45 minutes before collection time. By all means change your mind, but making this into an environmental decision is a bit of a stretch.

InTheMiddle23 · 28/10/2021 18:59

You might not mind, but others certainly do.

Sprogonthetyne · 28/10/2021 19:00

She has every right to be annoyed, for the shake of £15, I'd have gone through with the sale (obviously different if you can't afford to, but then you wouldn't be buying £15 umbrella anyway).

The police comment isn't because they would be interested in you messing her around. It's because you now know her address and what time her house will be empty, and possibly some of the items or at least quality of goods that are in her house. This could be useful information in the wrong hands, and she has no way to verify that you innocently lost then found your umbrella, it could easily be a scam to get the information.

That's bollocks, it's a second hand umbrella.

Don't try and make yourself out to be less of a time waster because you did it for eco reasons Grin

You are in the wrong, you messed her about, you should have just honoured your agreement and bought it anyway. Yes, her response was over the top and she clearly hasn't notified the police, but she does have a point that you know her address and when she will be out.

RealMermaid · 28/10/2021 19:00

You are the incarnation of everything bad about Facebook marketplace lol. It's easy to say she was unreasonable and it was an overreaction but for all you know you're the 5th or 6th person to mess her around on this, it does get very frustrating when buyers commit to a time and you arrange things around them and then there just bail at the last minute.

Sn0tnose · 28/10/2021 19:01

Is this a joke I have changed my plans plus taken item off eBay!!!?
I am fuming angry reported and informed police as you have our address plus our plans!! Very odd You might know that you’re a perfectly law abiding citizen who’d just lost and found a brolly, but all she knows is that she’s told you where her house is, that it’s going to be empty all afternoon and that other people have been contacted like this and have had their house burgled.

It was literally 2 hours so why take it off eBay? She hadn't changed her plans and why that level of aggression? To be fair to her, you’d only misplaced your brolly for two hours and were already buying a new one, so her taking it off eBay so she and others weren’t wasting their time messaging about a sold item isn’t unreasonable. And she could well have been planning to go out earlier but delayed her plans to work around you. You’ve completely wasted her time. I’m not surprised she’s got the hump with you.

ArchwizardTVampirebat · 28/10/2021 19:01

Yes, but she'd lose any watchers she had, or if it was on as an auction, anyone who'd already bid.

LocoCoconanas · 28/10/2021 19:03

You told her so I think that’s pretty good.

I’ve been trying to buy something for over a week, and the person i want to buy it from is being an ignorant fuckwit and won’t give me her house number nor commit to a collection time despite asking 3 times. I’m off to eBay!

Viviennemary · 28/10/2021 19:04

What a time waster you are. But I doubt Interpol will be putting out an international arrest warrant for you. Still annoying for her though. You are totally in the wrong here.

GiltEdges · 28/10/2021 19:06

Hmm

People like you epitomise everything I hate about FB marketplace.

SummerOfComedy · 28/10/2021 19:06

We sell a few things on Facebook. Recently sold a small kitchen item.
Had a lot of interest from many people saying they were coming to pick up and then no show. Not even a reason for not turning up!
Happens a lot.
I still prefer Facebook to eBay though, it's less hassle and the worst that happens is a no show. Gets sold in the end.
Doesn't bother me.

🙂

Waahingwashingwashing · 28/10/2021 19:07

Eco reasons and carbon footprint for a second hand umbrella 😂😂😂

LaBellaTrix · 28/10/2021 19:09

There is nothing worse than time wasters. You should have bought the brolly regardless f finding yours.

DiamondBright · 28/10/2021 19:10

There's no excuse, you're a time waster. It's a second hand umbrella the ethical implications are at best minimal. It sounds like you need a second umbrella in your household anyway.

SnackSizeRaisin · 28/10/2021 19:12

It was her choice to tell you she'd be out. That was completely unnecessary! Anyway you still don't actually know if the house is empty - there could be other people home.

Complete over reaction. No shows are part of the territory with FB marketplace. If you don't like it don't sell stuff that way. Go via eBay and post it or give to charity.
