I couldn't find my umbrella so decided on buying one off FB marketplace.
Found a nice Joules one for £15 and asked to buy it.
At 09.12 am had the conversation via messenger and agreed to buy. She said it would be on the doorstep and put the money through the letterbox. Fine by me.

I asked what time was convenient and she replied no later than 12.15 as she was going out and gave me the address. I said I would be there at 12.
At 11am I found my umbrella (DH had it) so messaged her at 11.12 am to apologise and say I didn't need it after all, but thank you very much.
She replied
Is this a joke I have changed my plans plus taken item off eBay!!!?
I am fuming Angry reported and informed police as you have our address plus our plans!! Very odd

It was literally 2 hours so why take it off eBay? She hadn't changed her plans and why that level of aggression?

Was I really being as unreasonable as she says? Genuinely confused!

@spudjulia ok then 😂😂

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 29/10/2021 13:11

This is a false analogy as no "refund" was requested by OP - no monies were yet exchanged. She changed her mind - it's allowed.

Sofiegiraffe - You took only one of my two paragraphs and responded to it in isolation - if you took note of the whole comment, you will see the full analogy that I was suggesting.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 29/10/2021 13:16

Blimey, how do people have the energy to give this much of a fuck about a £15 brolly.

Yes it's irritating being messed around but it's an umbrella. Not a 4K prized bull.

Do you think the same about other (potentially) poor people 'banging on' about the removal of their 'only £20' weekly UC uplift?

There are rich people out there who would be totally unable to understand somebody caring about a theoretical £4K bull - as it's 'hardly a £60M Van Gogh, is it'.

FreshFancyFrogglette · 29/10/2021 13:24

Exactly @WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll the fact that people can't comprehend why shes upset is surprising to me.

Imagine loosing your last £15 on the way to the shop, that's what it feels like.

Yes I read your entire comment. You are talking about a refund - you say what if her DP had found the brolly after monies had been exchanged and OP had then decided she wanted a refund, right? Well, I stand by my comment - that's a false comparison. She didn't want a refund as monies were never exchanged. Unless I am missing something else of what you mean?

@Luckingfovely

You committed to buy it, you should have bought it. You're totally in the wrong. Yeah, her message wasn't exactly mature and the police thing is obviously stupid, but she's right to be fuming.
In theory yes, but back in the real world people change their mind or can't get transport all the time, and change buying plans as a result.

Annoying to take something off ebay and then find it isn't sold, but then again she has no obligation to list in multiple places, and she could easily have committed to sell to OP and then found it sold on ebay as well and then she'd have been the one having to pull out of one of the sales.

The seller is rightfully a bit annoyed, but the reaction was completely OTT, it happens all the time and the seller was a bit crazy.

But she still has the umbrella worth £15 so what exactly has she lost other than a small bit of time? A small bit of time that could easily have been lost as a result of the umbrella selling on facebook and ebay and leaving seller as the one having to renege on a deal.
LaetitiaASD · 30/10/2021 11:18

And another thing... when selling on facebook or anywhere else there are three types of "deal" -

Deals that never happen

Deals where you get money in exchange for the item

The bad deals - the ones where you end up without the money or the item

If you have so few bad deals that you have the time and energy to get upset with the deals that don't happen then you're winning.

Sofiegiraffe · 30/10/2021 11:47

@LaetitiaASD
Very sensible posts, with which I fully agree.

FreshFancyFrogglette · 30/10/2021 15:30

Well you cant take the umbrella to the shop and exchange it for food, so potentially going hungry for a day whilst she tries to find another buyer... Or anything else that she has committed to with the assumption she would have £15 to pay for it.

Shasha17 · 30/10/2021 15:48

I'd be angry with you too and would just have bought it having already arranged it

Tal45 · 30/10/2021 15:51

You should have looked properly for your umbrella in the first place so you didn't end up wasting her time. People do this sort of thing all the time which is why she is so pissed off.
