To ask how the fuck you iron your king size duvet covers?

And fitted sheets?

I recently lost my grandmother and I have decided that I need to bloody well up my standards a bit - she had very high standards, and she's right!

I'm quite good at ironing generally, even work shirts but I just can't work out how to iron a massive duvet cover without it taking hours/being bloody difficult

Garment steamer is a game changer

vocksinsocks · 27/10/2021 08:15

I don't iron anything.

redfairy · 27/10/2021 08:16

I only iron my christmas tablecloth once a year. Everything else is either tumble dried then folded, or is crease free material.

TheKeatingFive · 27/10/2021 08:26

Ironing is like swearing - some are raised with standards.

Has this place morphed into a 1950s marriage manual? 😂

Tam20779 · 27/10/2021 10:00

You could always get a press. I hate ironing. My ironing board rarely comes out and I think the iron is still in a box in the garage since moving 7 months ago. Tbh it wasn’t a great iron anyway.

GladAllOver · 27/10/2021 10:03

There is no ironing at all in this house, don't see a need for it.

Standards are important

Yes, they are, but not these sort of silly self imposed ones, @blink18two
The standards that matter are about behaviour and how you treat people. In terms of house keeping, everything being hygienic and as comfortable as you can manage. A few creases in a duvet cover? Not a standard that matters at all. Sleep in it once and it’s creased anyway…and fitted sheets are stretched on the mattress so definitely don’t need ironing even for your spurious ‘standards’.
I hate when people try to suggest pointless housework is a moral issue.

100% agree cardi

'Standards are important' reminds me of someone who told me 'it's good to be clean' when I said I don't wax. So patronising.

Haveyoubrushedyourteethtoday · 27/10/2021 10:28

I’d never iron a sheet or Dona cover. Though I love the pressed linen you get in a posh hotel.

OP, I always think of my Nan when I drink beer. She loved a cold beer on a hot day. Never, ever from a bottle. Always in a small glass. She would also always wear a hat on special outings. My grandfather always, always wore a collared shirt and slacks. And a cap. Sometimes standards are comforting. Sorry about your grandmother.

Properjob · 27/10/2021 10:30

Good point Fatoaf... I suppose when we all have filters in our washing machines we will reduce the amount of microplastic fibres that are finding their way into fish! At least cotton rots down tho...we can buy organic cotton.. bamboo, linen and hemp..the latter has huge potential but is being hampered by the conservative lobby who think its marijuana 🤣.

Feelingsupersonic1 · 27/10/2021 13:16

I don’t iron a thing. Utterly liberating getting all those hours back a year on pointless activity.

Do you watch TV? Because I think ilthsts an utterly pointless waste of time but I sont judge people for it or tell them that

Each other their own tho. We are free to spend our time how we like...how wonderfully liberating that we can do that without judging other people on how they spend their time.

You just have 😂😂

rainbowmash · 27/10/2021 16:39

I once knew a man who ironed sheets again once they were ON the bed!

Personally I wouldn't have the time or inclination. But if I was going to, I'd use a large garment steamer, the type they use in shops. It's an investment, but gets larger things looking smooth VERY quickly.

HeronLanyon · 27/10/2021 18:20

I knew a man who in the 20s - 40s was brought up in a very large country house with a lot of servants (that’s what they were). The family had their newspapers ironed, he had his pocket money washed. He died around 20 years ago so I can’t ask, but I have no doubt at all that his sheets were ironed !

LuaDipa · 27/10/2021 18:51

I send my ironing out (and did the same when I was a sahm). I don’t like creased bed sheets but unfortunately I haven’t inherited my dm’s skill in producing crease-free washing. And I despise ironing so in my book it’s money well spent.

SpeckledlyHen · 28/10/2021 12:26

@Onshoredebris

Perhaps you should get a hobby if you’re so bored you want to iron duvet covers. And even worse think it matters. People are going to start finding you pretty boring if you’re life revolves around rubbish like this
What a rude and spiteful comment - I bet people are already finding you pretty boring to be round with such a nasty side to you.
Granjeanne · 29/10/2021 19:46

Life is too short to waste on ironing. Polycotton duvet covers etc. look fine if dried on a line outside or stretched out over warm radiators. If you have a large capacity tumble dryer, dry just one large item at a time. Don't be tempted to cram loads of stuff in at once, that's when it creases. But tbh, I just wouldn't worry about it. Creases tend to drop pot anyway once it is stretched out on the bed. Then use a throw or "runner" (like in posh hotels) or lots of cushions ! Don't let the older generations load you with guilt over stuff like this. They had different priorities. Many of them never worked outside the home and didn't have to perform the crazy juggling acts that women today seem compelled to attempt. Your sanity and mental health is far more important than a perfect home. Remember the mantra "dull women have immaculate houses!"

Trulyhadenough · 10/11/2021 17:45

Aaaaagh ! Too many tumble driers ! COP26 , remember?
only ever use tumble drier if it's pouring with rain and not warm enough for things on a maiden to dry in 24 hours. Do like my bedding ironed , though.

fizzypop100 · 10/11/2021 17:49

I only iron my husband's work shirts. Nothing else. Clothes are hung to dry on hangers so there are no creases. Bedding doesn't need to be ironed

Frederica852 · 10/11/2021 17:53

Mine go to the service wash place for washing, drying and pressing. Defo outsource this stuff, it's a game changer!

WildBluebell · 10/11/2021 18:06

I don't iron anything.

Melm22 · 28/11/2021 22:35

Fatty comment fuming

JHMJHM · 28/11/2021 23:13

I iron OP ! I do it while i listen to podcasts or the news. I dont iron my own clothes as most of them are wash and wear. I love ironed sheets and duvets though and as I dont change them that often it is not really a chore. Fold them and iron them - i find that enough. Takes around 3/4 mins x

Poshjock · 28/11/2021 23:23

I don't. However my mum did and taught me so I can do it well - I just choose not too.

I find that if I take them out of the machine and fold them neatly (two person is best with good tension) and I drape them over dining chairs and dry overnight - they have no visible creases.

My mum swore by the best quality - she had Percale sheets and duvet covers with a 500 count. She asked for two sets of duvet covers for her wedding and they are still in use yet - 50 years later and 10 years after she passed. They look perfect and are as soft as silk. She always ironed them (my dad doesn't now) and they ironed so easily when dried as I describe above.

Also vacuuming - I've bought one of those robot vacs. It does the cleaning overnight every night - game changer!
