And fitted sheets?

I recently lost my grandmother and I have decided that I need to bloody well up my standards a bit - she had very high standards, and she's right!

I'm quite good at ironing generally, even work shirts but I just can't work out how to iron a massive duvet cover without it taking hours/being bloody difficult

I've never ironed them and never will. They look absolutely fine without ironing.

blink18two · 25/10/2021 14:31

@kanteeeeee

Buy some Crease Release spray, it's not perfect but it takes two seconds and is better than creased sheets.
Tell me more!

I don’t. My grandmas both had very high standards too but would be fully supportive of me sacking off unnecessary ironing and doing something fun instead Smile

Chloemol · 25/10/2021 14:33

I don’t

GinnyBee · 25/10/2021 14:33

Ain't nobody got time for that! In the summer when I hang them outside they dry straight, but in the winter I just deal with my soft and wrinkly sheets out the tumble dryer!

My MIL irons hers with starch, I cannot comprehend how she considers it time well spent! I mean, I like a crisp sheet as much as the next person, but not enough to torture myself by ironing them myself.

Sorry to hear about your grandmother xxx I think her generation in general were more particular about housework, but that's possibly due to fewer women working outside the home. If I was a housewife I would probably do more ironing and apple pies too.

AspCommie · 25/10/2021 14:33

I also don't own an iron. Ironing bedsheets is bonkers.

CremeEggThief · 25/10/2021 14:33

You don't. Simple as that. I'm sure you can find umpteen different ways to fill your time instead of ironing (anything!) tricky things.

Butteredtoast55 · 25/10/2021 14:33

Exactly as Rachel has described. A lovely set of freshly-washed, ideally line-dried and ironed bedlinen is a joy. My DM was like your grandmother and she would often iron our bedlinen for us but now I do it or my DH and my DC do their own.

Whatup · 25/10/2021 14:34

get a clothes steamer soo much easier than ironing !

girlmom21 · 25/10/2021 14:34

Yes OP. Cotton bedsheets are your friend!

Chikapu · 25/10/2021 14:34

I don't. You could buy a steamer and use it after you've put the duvet in the cover.

woodhill · 25/10/2021 14:34

I tend to fold them in four then iron or iron small section at a time

grapewine · 25/10/2021 14:35

Ironing bedding seems a monumental waste of time.

Lottapianos · 25/10/2021 14:35

I'm super house proud, and make sure the pillows and cushions on the bed are all plumped up every morning, but I would not even dream of ironing sheets (or anything)!

Carboncheque · 25/10/2021 14:37

I don’t iron duvet covers or sheets. My mother only started doing this once she’d retired. Life’s too short for ironing duvet covers.

evilharpy · 25/10/2021 14:37

@RachelHasThoseInBurgundy

Fold them in half and iron one side then flip and do the other.

With fitted sheets you fold in half matching the corner seems and hook the corner over the end of the board, iron that section, flip over and hook the other corner, iron that section, then hook a corner so you have the top edge section on the board, iron, then pull the sheet towards you and iron a section at a time.

I iron for a living and this is how I get perfect results.

As a professional ironer, what kind of iron would you recommend? No iron I've ever had seems to get out stubborn creases in things like cotton shirts or bedding.

I don't iron bedding for the above reason. It takes forever and still looks a bit creased.

viques · 25/10/2021 14:37

I have vintage linen sheets and pillow cases which I do iron, but duvet covers? Luckily they didn’t make linen duvet covers in the thirties forties and fifties which is when my stuff was produced.

DramaAlpaca · 25/10/2021 14:37

I don't iron them, God no! But if I did I'd fold them and iron a bit at a time as described above.

Mybalconyiscracking · 25/10/2021 14:37

Line dry every time.
If you must iron get someone to help you fold them precisely longways 4x, iron each side, turn out and iron again, turn out and iron again.
Almost certainly not worth the effort though!

Bagelsandbrie · 25/10/2021 14:38

No way am I wasting time ironing bedding.

The only thing I ever iron is shirts for work because other people see them but no one sees my bedding except me so I don’t care about that at all!

chipsandpeas · 25/10/2021 14:39

if i ever have to iron sheets which is very rare then i put them on the bed and run the iron over them and the same with the duvet

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 25/10/2021 14:39

Mine are super king size and they’re folded and ironed in sections. I iron pillow cases, but not sheets.

Brakebackcyclebot · 25/10/2021 14:39

What an absolute waste of valuable time. Spend the hours you might have spent ironing a duvet cover or sheet doing something else!

LakieLady · 25/10/2021 14:40

Life's too short to iron duvet covers. And many other things ...

Monsterpumpkins · 25/10/2021 14:40

Ironing lady here!!
Iron the right side.. Make a quarter turn. Iron the right side.. Make a quarter turn. Iron the right side. Make a quarter turn.. Iron.
All done!!
