To not want to drive 40 minutes to return a Jam Jar?

itsme189 · 21/10/2021 11:00

A family member (partners side) made us all Jam for Christmas last year, lovely gift and was very nice.

They now want all the Jars back to do it again they are like Kilner Jars (just not branded I don't think) I do still have it in the random Tupperware cupboard.

I would have to drive 40 minutes to return the Jar DH thinks I should as it is thiers. I just said it was a gift and I am happy to not receive any Jam this year to avoid this. We wont see them between now and Christmas. He thinks I'm being unreasonable?

DH can't drive and there is no public transport to where they live!

You should’ve told her you hate jam and you regifted it so it wouldn’t go to waste 😂

BoredZelda · 21/10/2021 12:30

Make some jam of your own, fill the jar and send it to them as a gift.😀

silverbubbles · 21/10/2021 12:31

Let them know you will return the jar when passing and if this means you miss out on XMOS jam so be it. Its simply not worth the petrol cost otherwise.

NortieTortie · 21/10/2021 12:31

Haven't read the full thread but what a shame, you tripped on the way to the car and it smashed Sad

PatchworkElmer · 21/10/2021 12:31

I’d take a Tupperware pot with you at Christmas, so that you can decant your ‘gift’ immediately and save yourself a drive.

2bazookas · 21/10/2021 12:32

Post it.

I send all parcels by royal mail's collection system; you pay standard postal charge online plus 30 p and they collect it from your house.

fumfspos · 21/10/2021 12:32

OP did you get any other presents from that or was the jam (jar not included) the sum total?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 21/10/2021 12:33

If it's your partner's family, it's up to him to sort it out.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 21/10/2021 12:33

Haha…I know makers of food that have a rule that if you don’t return the jar you don’t get more, but it’s not usually in relation to a Christmas gift. It’s a ‘hey my pickles are done, do you want a jar?’

People are so weird. No way would I drive all that way to return a jar I got as a Christmas gift. I think she must have thought this a way to do inexpensive gifts, and failed to plan the logistics of it.

JellyTotCat · 21/10/2021 12:33

God what an annoying woman. You did the right thing not driving it back.

IslaPineappple · 21/10/2021 12:34

Say oh that's good news we won't be getting more. Didn't like to say but last year it made us all ill. Happy Christmas!

I love a bit of tit for tat.

GREAT! The OP can now send this link (or get her DP to do so) to the OP's partner's aunt, then the OP's partner's aunt can buy a bunch of them. Instead of demanding the ones she gave AS GIFTS are returned to her!
CheeseCakeSunflowers · 21/10/2021 12:35

Do you make jam op. If so and assuming you will be seeing them at some point this Christmas, you could gift them a jar of jam and put it in their container. Actually even if you don't make jam you could buy a fancy pot and decant it into the jar then pretend you made it. A nice cheap present sorted.

NailsNeedDoing · 21/10/2021 12:35

@itsme189

They messaged everyone individually asking for them back.

They've responded "I dont really want to drive all the way there, hopefully other people are more willing to return theirs or this will get expensive. And yeah I wont be making any for people who cant return it"

I DONT WANT YOUR BLODDY JAM

I just said no problem maybe let people know you need the Jar back next time.

How rude! This woman should be embarrassed about herself.

Message her back and say great, you don’t want anymore jam so everyone’s a winner.

SGChome20 · 21/10/2021 12:36

The chances of me still having the jar at this point would be nil. Or I’d be using it for something else. Really odd for them to ask for it back!

Grabmygran · 21/10/2021 12:36

This is batshit! But you didn’t need to make such a meal of it. Something like ‘oh sorry didn’t realise you wanted the jar back so it went in the recycling. Totally understand you wont be able to give us any jam this year’ would have closed it all down

HoppingPavlova · 21/10/2021 12:37

You are a better person than me. I would have responded ‘Are you on crackConfused’.

Seriously bonkers and would have been moot for me as when finished I would have binned it into recycling, no matter how fancy the jar. Have enough crap cluttering my kitchen.

Xmasbaby11 · 21/10/2021 12:41

That's so tight. The jar is part of the gift.

Calendulaaaaa · 21/10/2021 12:43

Love this! Use sainsburys basics though
Teateaandmoretea · 21/10/2021 12:44

How utterly ridiculous some people are.

I'd tell DH to post it. It's his family not yours.

Oh4Tunas · 21/10/2021 12:46

That's weird! The jar is definitely part of the gift. I think with family or good friends it's borderline okay for them to casually request it back if you still have it, aren't using it for something else, and will be seeing them soon. A little strange of a request, but within reason, but to ask someone to make such a long drive just to return a jar is ridiculous!

They should've just bought more and asked anyone who was able to return the original jars when they can, for future use.

thisplaceisweird · 21/10/2021 12:46

@BoredZelda

Make some jam of your own, fill the jar and send it to them as a gift.😀
this, or just fill the jar with your own jam or anything else and say you're using it! It's like asking for wrapping paper back. Weird
Mamamamasaurus · 21/10/2021 12:46

Give them the jam jar back, when you next see them (fuck posting it) but wrap it and gift it, it's their Christmas present. Problem solved.

MoonCowbag · 21/10/2021 12:46

Who are the 3% of lunatics who think YABU?

This is one of the weirdest things I've ever heard and YADNBU!!!

A vote for classics from me! Grin
