To not want to drive 40 minutes to return a Jam Jar?

itsme189 · 21/10/2021 11:00

A family member (partners side) made us all Jam for Christmas last year, lovely gift and was very nice.

They now want all the Jars back to do it again they are like Kilner Jars (just not branded I don't think) I do still have it in the random Tupperware cupboard.

I would have to drive 40 minutes to return the Jar DH thinks I should as it is thiers. I just said it was a gift and I am happy to not receive any Jam this year to avoid this. We wont see them between now and Christmas. He thinks I'm being unreasonable?

DH can't drive and there is no public transport to where they live!

They can come and pick it up, the tight arsed CFs! If they wanted the jars they should have said ‘the gift is the jam only - we want the jar back’. All that for a quid and they earn six figures.

Any arguing and snide comments, tell them it is a waste of petrol and time to make such an unnecessary journey and you are surprised that they have asked.

Dasher789 · 21/10/2021 15:48

this is madness. glad you have told them you cannot return the jar op. if it was a present last xmas, its a miracle you even have the bloomin thing!

ElftonWednesday · 21/10/2021 15:53

Just say sure, they are welcome to collect it from you any time.

SapphireSeptember · 21/10/2021 15:56

@Beautiful3

That's even more batshit than OP's situation, given that you paid for them! I doubt Sainsbo's ask for their jam jars back when they want to make more.

Arrowheart · 21/10/2021 15:57

If they want it that badly they can collect it.

Mix56 · 21/10/2021 15:59

Will you see them at Xmas ?
Give them the jar, wrapped.

mountbattenbergcake · 21/10/2021 16:02

@itsme189

I have messaged them and said "Hi, insert small talk here things are a bit tight at the moment so we aren't able to return the Jar but we have it here if you are passing to collect. Please don't worry about making us anything this year if you need the Jar and can't get it"
You are my literal hero Shock
GreenMoonflower · 21/10/2021 16:05

Purchase some Aldi basics jam and decant into kilner jar.
Unwrap these (link below) and add to jam.
Seal lid and stick a cheap tacky rosette bow to the outside.

Voilà... Your own special brand of plum jam.

Send to Auntie Tytasssa Ducks-Butthole as her Christmas gift.

This.
AnneB78 · 21/10/2021 16:12

if the petrol is an issue have you considered cycling there and back?

brokenbiscuitsx · 21/10/2021 16:13

@AnneB78

🤣 Nooo! Why is the OP cycling somewhere to give a jam jar back, this is ridiculous
AnneB78 · 21/10/2021 16:14

Well I'm not sure the friend would do this, but surely if she is demanding her jar back and not returning it then it could be construed as theft? I may be wrong but if it was me I would make sure it was returned asap

EmJay19 · 21/10/2021 16:15

"I dont really want to drive all the way there, hopefully other people are more willing to return theirs or this will get expensive. And yeah I wont be making any for people who cant return it"

Omg they are a total and utter fuckwit thank Christ you didn’t bother to take it back if that’s their attitude. Thou own a boat but can’t actually give away a jam jar 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

beigebrownblue · 21/10/2021 16:15

Just tell them what you would produce in CO2 emissions by getting iit back to them in a care kind of defeats the object...

CecilyP · 21/10/2021 16:16

They've responded "I dont really want to drive all the way there, hopefully other people are more willing to return theirs or this will get expensive. And yeah I wont be making any for people who cant return it"

That's you told, OP! I would be tempted to reply, 'That's fine, Auntie, your jam was nice enough but, in all honesty, I prefer Raspberry Jam from the Co-op's irresistible range.'

GrinHilarious. Watch out OP you're going to have the police on your doorstep handcuffing you next!

"Stop in the name of the law, jam jar thief!!"

Jesus wept.

safariboot · 21/10/2021 16:17

"Sorry, you've left it too late, we won't be around your way before Christmas. Unless you want to come and pick up."

MesChiensSontBeaux · 21/10/2021 16:18

Cycling? 🤣🤣🤣 And now It’s theft. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

This thread is bringing out all the best people.

What???? It was a present. The jar is an integral part of the gift if the gift is a jar of jam.

Pbbananabagel · 21/10/2021 16:19

Can you reply again and lay on the kill-them-with-kindness e.g say,
“Oh I’m SO glad you get it! It is a long way and a lot in petrol just for a jar! Lol, thanks for understanding :)”

ThePlumVan · 21/10/2021 16:20

Smash it. End of problem. And jam hopefully.

No the OP misinterpreted, it was a blob or gloop of jam not a jar of jam. The jar wasn’t included Grin
SunshineCake1 · 21/10/2021 16:38

I make mince meat and give to two people who always return the jars. If I have to a friend who I isn't live near or see often I wouldn't ask for the jar back. If they offered on the next visit I would accept.

Post it back. Don't Amazon them a new one.

NewlyGranny · 21/10/2021 16:42

Plum jam is a bit pedestrian too, imho. Quince, now, or damson cheese, or crabapple jelly I'd be excited about. Even greengage jam.

I bet the aunt has plum trees, so only has to buy the sugar. Or perhaps she went scrumping?

TatianaBis · 21/10/2021 16:45

Who actually buys jam jars though? We save up all glass jars and put them on Freecycle - they normally go to jam makers.

My mum, who’s big jam/marmalade maker, has a cupboard full of Bonne Maman jars she’s stored up. She gives her jam to friends and family but they get soon replaced by store bought jam.

The chances of aunt actually having bought the jam jar I’d say are fairly slim.
