Apart from messy? 🤣

To ask what style you would use to describe this living room?
OP posts:

Tired. It's got a look of someone trying to get a look of some description then giving up a bit and panicking and adding bits and pieces that don't work with the wallpaper.

Clear all the accessories and throws out. Turn the mirror the correct way and take the pic again. It'll look totally different.

If Oscar Wilde was there he would say "either that wallpaper goes or I do"

DeJaDont · 20/10/2021 19:33

Hun-believable

Funnylittlefloozie · 20/10/2021 23:00

I stand by it. Its fucking ugly and looks tatty. Of course I wouldn't say it to someones face, but I'm not saying it to "someone", am I? The (anonymous) OP said it wasn't her house, and I said what I thought.

And for the person who scoffed at me never having seen a squat... dearie, I have raided encountered a number of such residences in my time. They don't all look like what you think they look like.

MrsRobbieHart · 20/10/2021 23:17

In other words, some of the squats you’ve seen were well kept and decorated. Not sure why you’d use squat as an insult then Confused

frazzlesmore · 20/10/2021 23:19

I'm not sure what your definition of a squat is but I would think that image doesn't represent what most people would think of when imagining a squat.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/10/2021 23:26

What I really don’t like is the diamond shaped mirror/ picture. It just looks like it’s been knocked to one side.

Otherwise it’s just, well, a sitting room. Lived in!

MrsRobbieHart · 20/10/2021 23:28

How is that relevant when you, the squat expert, have told us that it looks like some of the squats you have been in? So clearly, some squats are well kept, and it’s not an insult to say a place looks like a squat, when you know a squat can look lovely. So calling it a squat is meaningless.

MrsRobbieHart · 20/10/2021 23:29

Apologies, I mistook you @frazzlesmore for squat expert @Funnylittlefloozie

frazzlesmore · 20/10/2021 23:31

phew!

@iamnickiminaj

I don't know why some people need to be so rude on here as stated up thread. It was put on Pinterest for the world to see and had called it retro. I don't think it's retro so was just looking to see how others would describe the style.
I can see where they're coming from with 'retro'. My immediate thought on the photo was 'feature wall' - one wall papered in a pattern and all others painted a plain colour. And 'feature wall' to me screams 1980s.

TBH it's really not got any discernible style at all. Not saying it's horrible, just that it looks like the normal mish-mash of stuff that you acquire over time, rather than stuff that's been put together deliberately for an effect.

MrsDThomas · 21/10/2021 07:06

It looks like someone is trying too hard with copying a design they have seen on Pinterest and then buying at B&M.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 21/10/2021 07:15

It’s tasteless shit thrown together, no articulation needed for a basic “describe this living room”

HeronLanyon · 21/10/2021 07:30

Looks to me like a sitcom TV set.
Ie trying to look messy but actually the mess is very surface, nothing is lived in, alla bit of a mish mash. Doesn’t look ‘real’ somehow.
If it is someone’s room then fine - that’s what they’ve chosen to do.

Laiste · 21/10/2021 08:10

@GlitterBiscuits

I would rather live there than in a sea of grey with the ridiculous karate chop cushions
Grin karate chop

This thread is gold.

My twopence worth - i hate rugs on carpet. That's what jumped out at me first.

secondly i believe it's OP's room

NashvilleQueen · 21/10/2021 08:16

Someone has obviously tried to make the place homely. It's not my choice but it's better than people not caring about their environment.

Laiste · 21/10/2021 08:26

Why are some posters worrying about who's being polite about a random picture of a room posted by someone who said it isn't their's and they just got it off the internet and want opinions of it. This image could be years old!

I love to hear what people really think unrestrained by social constraints - having to be twee and polite. This is the place to hear blunt opinion and it's what's great about AIBU Grin

thebabessavedme · 21/10/2021 08:41

It looks like someones home but just not stylish enough to warrant a post on pinterest, it has nothing interesting in it and looks cheap.

NearLifeExperience · 21/10/2021 09:01

'Pastel noughties', I'd say.
It's not retro; well the wallpaper is, but not the whole look or vibe.

And the colours are pretty joyless!

HintofVintagePink · 21/10/2021 09:37

It’s very dated and looks a bit grubby.

ClinkeyMonkey · 21/10/2021 09:48

I agree. And the most hypocritical of all is the OP herself, who described it as 'god awful', then proceeded to criticise other posters for using what she considered more objectionable language. What the hell did she expect in AIBU?

Whattheschitt · 21/10/2021 09:54

I can see where they were going with it. Modern with a vintage twist and obviously a colour palette of pink and grey. I think they've just got a bit lost in it all.

As a title for it? I'd probably say Modern Vintage?

brokenbiscuitsx · 21/10/2021 10:11

I think it’s muddled up a few styles. There’s the pink which feels quite 80s, in a Seinfeld, American 80s sort of way. The boho style rug and macrame feels 70s but the other bits are more 2000s glam and don’t seem to fit iyswim.

Amazingblossoms · 21/10/2021 10:32

Modern baroque

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 21/10/2021 10:37

@lawofdistraction

Wherever that picture is from, I don't think the OP found it on Pinterest. I have spent more time than I should have looking at Pinterest interiors over the years and have never, ever seen a picture that looks like that (messy presentation)
You do realise anyone can put pictures up? There are pictures of messy rooms.

What does it matter anyway? The point of the thread isn't is the OP lying about where the picture is from and if it is her living room or not. It really doesn't matter.
