I have a long term school ‘friend’, let’s call her S. I hear from her very sporadically and most recently, when she wants something: sponsorship money from me for one of her ‘challenges’ to stay in my central city home (!)… but folks, I give you the best one to date today…

Text out of the blue.. not even a ‘how are you’.. can I pick her son up from the airport (!) on Wednesday as he’s flying in alone (he is 10) from his dad’s abroad. You’re thinking wtaf, right?

The text goes on.. she can’t and her new DP are holidaying in the south of France and their flight doesn’t get in to airport until 5pm.. so the wee mite is alone for 4 hours after travelling alone. At 10. Jesus!

It ends ‘would obviously be great to see you too!!’

AIBU to think cheeky fucker and never speak to the self centred cow again?

generally people just walk off the plane, no meeting required, and no one will know he is being met or not surely

I don't know of any International airline that lets 10 year olds fly alone without being part of an unaccompanied minors program (which will insist on handing him over to the named adult they have been told will be meeting him).

Not with children. There are lots of protocols with Unaccompanied Minors as they're called.

FYI, My grand daughter is 13, she can travel alone on Air France, (domestic flights anyway)
The unaccompanied service cost extra, & is not obligatory

Lalliella · 19/10/2021 08:41

So, what happened @Peanutbuttermandms?

Alwayscheerful · 19/10/2021 08:54

A 10 year old would travel as an unaccompanied minor and would have their passport and ticket held by airline staff, they would be signed for by a named adult at arrivals, possibly held in a secure area with toys, play-stations and computers until the named adult arrived,

A slightly older child , eg 13 or so, would hold their own passport and would travel as a young person travelling alone and the crew would keep an eye on them.

Just NO.

DiamondBright · 19/10/2021 08:56

I think the majority of us, me included, would send a very short clear message back confirming we are unable to assist and then not reply to any further messages, just to ensure there's no ambiguity.

That said, you are under no obligation to do so and that's your choice.

I would also assume you're not the only one being asked, and by responding early I'd hope to be off the list of potential helpers with her attention focused elsewhere.

honeygriff · 19/10/2021 09:27

Oh to be posh, you really can do what you want can't you? If she can't get anything in place I'm expecting you to get a call from airport security.

A 13 year old child is very different to a 10 year old Most airlines insist on UMS for 5-12 year olds, some up to 14/16 years old dependent on that specific airline. It will very likely be obligatory UMS for a 10 year old. Anecdotal talk of what an airline did with an older child is rather unrelated to OPs thread

This thread is INSANE. Every day this place becomes more and more like the Stanford Prison Experiment.

Every time I look at the usernames of the contrary posters and those who always attack the OP, whatever the thread content and situation, you see the same names. Absolutely hilarious. I’d so love to see some of you in real life, because I hope you’re not the way you portray yourselves on here. 😂

"generally people just walk off the plane, no meeting required, and no one will know he is being met or not surely"

Not when they are ten and are flying as an unaccompanied minor.

Yes Air France will allow children to travel alone (without the UM service) from 12 years of age. I don't know any airline that would allow 10-year olds to do that.

And? She will just say that she is not responsible for the child and has never agreed to any arrangements to pick the child up. Considering that according to OP, she doesn't even have the flight details, how could she in the first place?
Imtryingveryhard · 19/10/2021 18:06

OP hasn’t commented since Sunday so I think she is blanking mumsnet like she is CF. Silence is king after all. I would have replied to also say no, just for certainty (probably phrased LOL no!) but that wasn’t the OP question. I agree that OP shouldn’t speak to this CF again. If this is true. Not troll hunting but after the forceful OP and replies I’m surprised by the silence leading up to pick up day tomorrow. If it’s true I hope a lone 10 year is looked after/collected by someone as it’s not OP’s responsibility. Clearly.

CherryBlossomWinter · 19/10/2021 18:10

@NormanStangerson you are not far wrong! Why are we still here?! I think perhaps it’s time to step away… Shock

BEST COMMENT FOR SURE!!
14spanners · 19/10/2021 21:42

I AGREE!

SueblueNZ · 19/10/2021 22:48

Just to digress...
I'd you block a person's phone number, do they get a message to that effect if they try to call or text?

GrandmaAli · 19/10/2021 22:51

I think it says message unsent. Not sure about calls.

SueblueNZ · 19/10/2021 23:13

@GrandmaAli
Thanks. Fortunately I have never needed to use it.

Biancadelrioisback · 20/10/2021 09:06

I hope we get an update today!

whynotwhatknot · 20/10/2021 13:53

any frantic phonecalls op?

MyOtherProfile · 20/10/2021 14:59

@Biancadelrioisback

I hope we get an update today!
We are not likely to hear anything. Didn't OP block the CF?
Lunificent · 20/10/2021 15:06

I’ll eat my hat if there’s an update to this.

WhereIsMumHiding3 · 20/10/2021 20:29

If it is all worked out, OP won't hear a peep

So this is one of those situations where no news is good news. CF made alternative arrangements for her son to be collected & CF didn't try to lie to airline staff that OP was going to collect him. (As an unknown airport number wouldn't have been blocked )
