Prof Stock & disgraceful, disrespectful, disingenuous and disillusioned students!!

I’m so angry that a handful of students and fanatical activists are deliberately silencing an academic over her very justified views on biology. Professor Stock, by her title alone, is an incredibly well read academic who has studied and researched her topic but because this doesn’t align with a small majority she could lose her job and has been advised to seek protection and put up CCTV. WTF Angry

What she has written-
Womanhood and manhood reflect biological sex, not gender or gender identity;
The claim 'transwomen are women' is a fiction, not literally true
Sexual orientation (being gay, being lesbian) is determined by same-sex attraction, not attraction to gender identity
Spaces where women undress and sleep should remain genuinely single-sex, in order to protect them;
Children with gender identity disorders should not be given puberty blockers as minors.

I personally agree with all these points! You CANNOT change chromosomes, you CANNOT change your sex organs and reproductive systems, it doesn’t matter what you identify as.
Why is she being silenced and threatened and why isn’t more being done by the university’s, police and government???

I spent my whole childhood watching my mum being beaten up and tortured by my dad and I passionately believe in safe spaces for women… toilets, changing facilities, refuges etc. Recently on MN for example a lady commented on finding a man using the Ladies toilets with the door open when the Gents toilets were operational, this behaviour is indefensible, he knew what he was doing and got a kick out of it! What is happening in this country that a woman can’t feel safe to use a public toilet!

I feel scared for women and I am hugely concerned about people being silenced in favour of this indoctrination!

Do others feel as strongly as I do??

YABU - the students are right
YANBU - Professor Stock is right

I wonder how long this will be allowed to stay in AIBU.

CreepingDeath · 17/10/2021 09:30

Interestingly, I participated in a debate recently for a course I’m doing, and my debate team mates were late teens/ early twenties.
We were discussing debating in general, and controversial topics, and many of them stated that they would be unable to debate in favour something they didn’t agree with.

Even though I said that the whole point of debating is that it’s not about what you really think, but the ability to step outside your own view point and critically analyse a topic from all sides, but they just kept saying that they wouldn’t or couldn’t go against what they believed.Hmm

I think they see this as conviction and strength of mind, but in fact it’s the opposite.

I keep going back to maturity, there is a complete lack of maturity and common sense in all this. And yes I know that’s patronising, but many of these young people just don’t have the life experience to understand any viewpoint but their own.

So far so normal, but the fact that established institutions are not challenging them is causing real harm.

Waitwhat23 · 17/10/2021 09:30

Why don't the university and the police deal with their behaviour? Threatening, unpleasant and unfair? Why can't her "critics" ever be clear on what the actual problem is, and give actual examples rather than parroting the same weird vague accusations over and over with no actual evidence? It's so bizarre that no one has stepped in and just said, "stop!".

They give vague answers because they know that if they said, openly and outright, 'we disagree with Professor Stock because she says human beings can't change sex', the vast majority of the general public would say 'well she's right. They can't'. There has never been any credible evidence to show that human beings can change sex so as a pp says, its very much flat earth territory, just with an inexplicable amount of influence and power behind it.

GoldChick · 17/10/2021 09:33

@CreepingDeath not sure any of them are cut out for academic life then.

Phyllis321 · 17/10/2021 09:33

Just bought her book, sending a card to her department ASAP.

AmanitaRubescens · 17/10/2021 09:36

@ufucoffee

The university should stop being worried about being dammed if they do and just do the right thing and tell the batshit students to shut up, stop threatening people or they'll be out.
That's it in a nutshell!

Why aren't Sussex University providing security so KS can be in campus?

FOJN · 17/10/2021 09:37

The students wore masks to remain anonymous because:

No one wants to lose their place at university, but we don't want to sacrifice our right to defend ourselves with our words.

Apparently they don't understand irony.

It's absolutely disgraceful that an institution of higher learning would indulge this kind of bullying. She's not the first Professor to need additional security either, Selina Todd at Oxford had to have security guards to give lectures if I remember correctly. How can anyone claim they are the ones being made to feel unsafe when their behaviour leaves someone else needing to take extra security precautions.

I'm sure this thread will be sent to the naughty step PDQ. Women discussing being silenced and subjected to threats isn't allowed on MN if it's related to a certain topic.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/10/2021 09:38

YANBU.

If these students had valid objections to her work or words, they should be able to do it in a civilised, non threatening manner.

Apart from the scientific illiteracy etc, their behaviour is astonishingly hypocritical.

RAFHercules · 17/10/2021 09:40

UseTheRakeDear
I completely agree with you, in no other arena of life would this level of intolerance (extremism) be pandered to. It is quite terrifying, how are our DDs not seeing what is happening under their noses?

CreepingDeath · 17/10/2021 09:43
@CreepingDeath not sure any of them are cut out for academic life then.
Well exactly, but I guess they haven’t figured that out.
I suppose when you operate in a mostly online world - which many of these people do - you can augment and edit and photoshop, and manipulate your ‘reality’ to only reflect back what you want. You follow only people that agree with you and reinforce your existing ideas.

But in the real world, that doesn’t happen. That’s why I think many of them get so angry when faced with reality, they can’t delete or block, so they lash out.

CityMumma78 · 17/10/2021 09:43

What card can I send to her and her department? Is this a card sending best wishes and support?

Also why would MN take this thread down?!?! Or is it for the same reason Prof Stock is being cancelled, i.e. people being silenced for the vocal minority! Surely MN is the perfect platform for this type of discussion, to share views, ideas and debate.

It should be, but a special naughty step corner has been created for anything related to this topic because so many people complained that they didn't like it being discussed.
Pinkfairylights · 17/10/2021 09:51

YANBU at all.

sst1234 · 17/10/2021 09:53

@mustlovegin

It's as if we woke up one day and found our youths and institutions had become rabid flat Earthers who will hound anyone for saying the Earth is not flat

Yes, it's Galileo all over again

It’s worse than that. It’s a sinister left wing agenda to re write history and biology. They’ll try Math next and tell us 2+2 is not 4 and if you think it is, you should check your privilege.
AlfonsoTheDinosaur · 17/10/2021 09:53

YANBU.

orangejuicer · 17/10/2021 09:54

@mustlovegin

Thank you GCAcademic

I do object to my taxes being used in this way

^This

Complain to the Office for Students if you feel that strongly (England only though).
TheKeatingFive · 17/10/2021 09:55

This is an appalling turn of events, the universities in question should be utterly ashamed of themselves.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 17/10/2021 09:55

Yep justback. I imagine as we speak it’s being mass reported by the monitors with complaints that it doesn’t belong in AIBU And “don’t we have a place for these conversations in FWR”

andweallsingalong · 17/10/2021 09:56

Does anyone know if any pressure is being put on the police to take action on the threats or any arrests made? Scandalous if not...

CreepingDeath · 17/10/2021 09:58

I know, which is incredibly depressing on a site that is mainly for women.

We are discussing women’s viewpoints being attacked and shut down, and in doing so we are told to shut up and go into the naughty corner.

Larabananas · 17/10/2021 09:59

I'm shocked.. Whatever happened to freedom of speech and rational debate? I thought that that was an essential part of further education. I clicked on this expecting some extremist views, not someone being bullied out of their job by cancel culture and hatred for trying to have an informed discussion on a very complex issue. Awful

justbackfrombangkok · 17/10/2021 09:59

Lisa Nandy has just been on AM talking about rape and death threats against women via social media. No sense of irony at all.

GoldChick · 17/10/2021 10:01

@CreepingDeath that's really sad. The best way of getting a viewpoint heard is to consider the other sides of the debates I find. They are shooting themselves in the foot.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/10/2021 10:06

This subject isn't just about women's rights.

It's about free speech.
It's about aspects of the higher education environment which many parents will have considerable interest in.

This sort of mob bullying behaviour from the students would be unacceptable if they were targeting an academic for other reasons. It would be unacceptable even if the academic was saying something which was unreasonable or factually wrong (which is not the case here). It would be unacceptable if the academic was a man.

Igmum · 17/10/2021 10:07

Can't vote because I'm not on the website and the app doesn't allow it Hmm but YADNBU. This is appalling. Yes Police and campus security should have taken action. And most of those protesting don't know what she said.
