My friend won’t let me bring my gecko to her house. Aibu?

I’m going to visit my friend for the weekend soon with my kids.

We have to look after the school gecko for half term, so I asked if we could bring him with us. He’s very small and his tank is only shoe box sized so this seemed quite reasonable to me.

She responded in an extremely abrupt way to say that I couldn’t bring him and would need to find another arrangement. She was particularly irate about the idea I would need to bring live crickets to feed him with. I reassured her that feeding geckos crickets is totally ethical, and that they are in an escape proof container but she was resolute. Tbh I think she was drunk.

I feel really hurt that she wouldn’t allow what seems like quite a small request! If she wanted to bring her gecko to my house I would be totally okay with that. It’s very inconvenient for me too, I think that she just doesn’t value my time or friendship. I’m already having to make arrangements for my dog and chickens when we go to visit so the gecko is just a step too far.

YABU, it's her house so it's up to her what gets brought through the door. Not everyone likes reptiles, crickets, etc, a lot of people are frightened off them, and so doesn't want them in her house.

So tell the school you can't have the gecko for half term and anther kid can look after it.
And why the hell is a gecko being kept in a showbox sized tank - that's cruel they need way more space. I don't believe it for a minute anyway because they need heating and humidity - so its bollocks its in a shoebox sized tank there wouldn't be room for its gear.

We have had geckos for years. They don't need feeding daily, for a weekend you will be fine to leave him home. The vivarium sounds too small though if only shoe box size, they like to climb up so thay would be very shallow for him.

A tank the size of a shoebox sounds cruel.

One of my school friends had a gecko when we were kids, one night while I was there on a sleepover the crickets escaped - that was a tense night, apparently she was still finding them weeks later.

Feel sorry for the gecko being in such a small tank to be honest!

But no, you can’t just take your gecko along with you like a spare child.
