AIBU?

My friend won’t let me bring my gecko to her house. Aibu?

I’m going to visit my friend for the weekend soon with my kids.

We have to look after the school gecko for half term, so I asked if we could bring him with us. He’s very small and his tank is only shoe box sized so this seemed quite reasonable to me.

She responded in an extremely abrupt way to say that I couldn’t bring him and would need to find another arrangement. She was particularly irate about the idea I would need to bring live crickets to feed him with. I reassured her that feeding geckos crickets is totally ethical, and that they are in an escape proof container but she was resolute. Tbh I think she was drunk.

I feel really hurt that she wouldn’t allow what seems like quite a small request! If she wanted to bring her gecko to my house I would be totally okay with that. It’s very inconvenient for me too, I think that she just doesn’t value my time or friendship. I’m already having to make arrangements for my dog and chickens when we go to visit so the gecko is just a step too far.

Aibu?

No it isn't a 'small request'. No animal big or small is allowed in my house. I respect people's love for pets and I expect some respect for my dislike of pets.

You wouldn’t be bringing it and it’s crickets go my house either OP. If this is real, I’m astounded you’re in any way surprised at her reaction.

Lol good one. Why can whoever's looking after the chickens not chuck a few crickets to the gecko?

Hang on - the school gecko??!!

Anyway, what happened to the good old class Teddy bear?! A Gecko indeed!

Oh god, you don't have to write a diary for the gecko too, do you OP?

Dear diary,
I'm two days into my stay and I've already managed to eliminate the dog and the chickens from the household. I'm also in the process of isolating IndraOnTheMountain from her friends, so she will have no-one to turn to when I take over her Mumsnet account. Next, it's the rest of her social media, and then it's only a matter of time until Geckos rule the world. I wonder how Dave's doing wrecking the lives of the parents of class 3B next door...

You don't take reptiles with you to other people's houses.
Lenny needs a bigger viv.
Crickets will escape.

I’d be ok with the gecko. However, live crickets ?! Shudder

A tank the size of a shoebox sounds cruel.

Which is why this thread isn't remotely amusing.

OP I am sympathetic and cant believe how icky posters are being over the crickets. They are just wee harmless critters. But we often leave our leopard gecko for a week with lots or water and worms and he is fine. I would be very welcome to any friend’s pets if
small and encaged! Iwould not be judgemental or fussy in the least. Your pets need looking after. Its use of electricity is also tiny.

Crickets get out all of the time. And a viv the size of a shoebox (I’m guessing a leopard gecko) is animal cruelty and inadequate. Not to mention lack of lighting etc. Let me guess it’s substrate is calci sand

I don't see the issue. It's not like he'll be pissing and shitting all over the place, he'll be in a glass tank the entire time.

That’s disgraceful.
I’d be reporting the school.
‘School gecko’ teaching kids to look after animals yet keeps it in a shoe box? Disgusting Hmm

Wouldn’t bother me. Wish our school gave us something other than lice to host.

@joborplay that's easy for you to say. But when DP was sat there in the Cabinet Office and 'lett go' they started all getting a bit shirty with him and frowning and whatever.

Whether you were being reasonable or not you would not be bringing a reptile and a bunch of live crickets to feed it to my house.

Invite her and her gecko to yours first then, so she can hardly refuse when you go to hers.
