My friend won’t let me bring my gecko to her house. Aibu?

I’m going to visit my friend for the weekend soon with my kids.

We have to look after the school gecko for half term, so I asked if we could bring him with us. He’s very small and his tank is only shoe box sized so this seemed quite reasonable to me.

She responded in an extremely abrupt way to say that I couldn’t bring him and would need to find another arrangement. She was particularly irate about the idea I would need to bring live crickets to feed him with. I reassured her that feeding geckos crickets is totally ethical, and that they are in an escape proof container but she was resolute. Tbh I think she was drunk.

I feel really hurt that she wouldn’t allow what seems like quite a small request! If she wanted to bring her gecko to my house I would be totally okay with that. It’s very inconvenient for me too, I think that she just doesn’t value my time or friendship. I’m already having to make arrangements for my dog and chickens when we go to visit so the gecko is just a step too far.

Aibu?

This is such a brilliant thread it should go in Classics.

So has she already got her own gecko? Maybe she's nervous about a breeding situation that could get out of hand?

shash1982 · 14/10/2021 18:33

Surely this is a wind up!

But if you're being serious OP then no, just no.

Seriously?
SpicyTool75 · 14/10/2021 18:34

or she just has boundaries and doesn't want a gecko in her house!

That too

AutistAwayWithUrConditionalLuv · 14/10/2021 18:34

Are you joking?

That's a 'no' from me, dawg!

LemonSwan · 14/10/2021 18:34

Tell the school you cant take the gecko as going away?

Anoisagusaris · 14/10/2021 18:36

It’s not even your gecko. Just tell the school you will take it another weekend.

SudokuWillNotSaveYou · 14/10/2021 18:36

@MedusasBadHairDay

If she wanted to bring her gecko to my house I would be totally okay with that.

.. has everyone been issued with a gecko except me?

You didn’t get issued your gecko @MedusasBadHairDay? Yeah, that’s a huge oversight. You’re going to want to log it with 101, and then probably write your MP.

You know what this honestly sounds like though? The super soaker mum all over again, who completely refused to believe it was unreasonable for her DS to take his super soaker, and be the only one WITH a super soaker, at a birthday party.

MareofBeasttown · 14/10/2021 18:37

Yes, I find it very funny. Especially the casual line "If she wanted to bring her own gecko to my house..." Maybe I am easily pleased in the pandemic.

ThinWomansBrain · 14/10/2021 18:39

It’s very inconvenient for me too
so don't go, stay home with the children, dogs, gecko, chickens...

WHy can't whoever is going in to look after the chickens bung some crickets to the gecko?

iklboo · 14/10/2021 18:44

Have I fallen down the rabbit hole again?

And it should be called Gordon.

dustofneptune · 14/10/2021 18:44

I will take the gecko. He sounds cute.

hotmeatymilk · 14/10/2021 18:45

I think we need to hear this one from the perspective of the gecko to be able to judge properly.

Asleanna · 14/10/2021 18:46

This has got to be a reverse LOL. Of course she isn't unreasonable!

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/10/2021 18:46

My dd was asked to bring the school goat home once.

TwinklyBranch · 14/10/2021 18:49

I wouldn't let anyone bring a gecko or live crickets into my house either. Now if it was the class guinea pig that would be a different story...

It must be a slow day.

FYI, reverses are shit. Just post properly, it's not like people wouldn't agree with you on this one.

But as the post stands, you're so very unreasonable.

thisplaceisapigsty · 14/10/2021 18:51

I want a gecko now.

@vodkaredbullgirl

Ds1 once bet dh that, by the time he was 40, he would have owned a goat for a year. He still has 12 years, but no sign of goat acquisition yet.

I’m not sure if we’ve told his fiancée that she’s getting a goat, at some point! Grin

HemanOrSheRa · 14/10/2021 18:53

@ilovesooty

Actually I once had a service user whose parents had smuggled a baby alligator in from abroad. I found out when his peers complained he smelled and wouldn't go in groups with him. He was told me no one in the house could keep clean as the alligator had grown and had reached the point of outgrowing the bath. They were worried about getting into bother if they sought help.

At least a gecko is a bit smaller and doesn't eat people.

We had similar with a service user. Except it was a snake. A huge snake. When we visited the property the lounge was crammed full of tanks with all sorts of snakes/reptiles and there was a snake in the bathroom Confused.

Anyway, what happened to the good old class Teddy bear?! A Gecko indeed!

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 14/10/2021 18:55

Oh what bollocks. I've friends who have a gecko and you can't keep them in such a small tank, it's cruel and there wouldnt be room for its equipment plus the tank has to be heated and has a special light. If this is true you deserve to be shot fined for keeping an animal in such conditions.

Grow up and troll somewhere else, God its not even half-term, don't you have homework or a street corner to hang out on or something?

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 14/10/2021 18:55

"If she wanted to bring her gecko to my house I would be totally okay with that"

Does she have a gecko?

"If she wanted to bring her gecko to my house I would be totally okay with that"

Does she have a gecko?

Perhaps she's worried the geckos won't get on.
