To think this kitchen is lovely and not too girlie?

We are thinking about getting our kitchen done and looking for some inspiration. I've found one that I absolutely love, but my husband thinks it's minging and too 'girlie' for a man to live in.

AIBU to think this is gorgeous and not too feminine?

I'm totally confident in my identity as a woman (I am a woman, for clarity). I hate pink.
I'd describe it as too girly for me too Grin

But why is pink associated with being “girly”? My son loves pink!!
GreyhoundG1rl · 14/10/2021 08:26

I don't know really... Maybe because it's associated with fluffy, feathery things?

And is fluffy and feathery girly?!
FindingMeno · 14/10/2021 08:32

It's gorgeous, but perhaps negotiate on the paint colour.

GreyhoundG1rl · 14/10/2021 08:33

Well, too girly for me 🤷🏻‍♀️ Pink is just too insipid.

Insipid? Sure “Girly”? No
TwinsandTrifle · 14/10/2021 08:36

But why is pink associated with being “girly”?

I love these people who pretend they've got no idea that pink is associated with girls. It's so tedious. What? Me sir? No I've never been in a shop and seen the rows of girls clothes in pink and and the rows of boys clothes in blue. I've never seen such a thing, honest guv. Grin

Then usually someone will do the "actually pink used to be a boys colour"

Stop pretending to be so woke that you're shocked that pink is seen by anyone as a "girl's colour." You know it is. The shops are full of it. And being professionally offended by that, is not what this thread is about.

And by the way, there's nothing wrong with something being girly. So if we could lose the pearl clutching at the idea anyone has said that. It was used as a description. Some of the posts on here are laughable. Only on MN....

Reallyimeanreally2022 · 14/10/2021 08:42

I know it associated with being girly

Why I don’t like is the suggestion that being “girly” is a negative.

Reallyimeanreally2022 · 14/10/2021 08:43

This is women
Describing something they don’t like as “girly”

They were once girls.
Many will have daughters

It’s odd

MilduraS · 14/10/2021 08:46

I agree @TwinsandTrifle I don't understand anyone who doesn't think it looks girlie. It's a bit like a doll house kitchen. I kind of like it but it's not a popular kitchen colour and I know my husband would object.

daffodils123 · 14/10/2021 08:47

Find it weird when men's opinions are dismissed like this - it's his kitchen too. Find a colour you both like/love.

Regardless of what we all pretend, pink has been turned into a stereotypically feminine colour over the years, so yes the kitchen does look "girlie".

It's really not. Girly is not their taste. It's as simple as that.

I don't like my mother's kitchen which I find too Scandi. It's a descriptive word. I don't like that style. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with Scandi stuff. It's not my taste.

First you do the faux confusion:

But why is pink associated with being “girly”?

Then admit:

I know it associated with being girly

Maybe pick one? Hmm

Why I don’t like is the suggestion that being “girly” is a negative.

No one's suggested that. You've come up with that yourself.

Good point

RantyAunty · 14/10/2021 08:59

It's interesting that in the 19th century pink was for boys and blue was for girls.

I like the kitchen.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/10/2021 09:00

Not keen on the pink. But it's otherwise a lovely kitchen.

Marmelace · 14/10/2021 09:07

It's just rather bland and adds nothing to the rest of the kitchen.

MrsToothyBitch · 14/10/2021 09:08

Not my taste and I think it will date fast. However I don't think it's too girly colour wise, it's just the walls, not everything- I think it's the plant that tips it tbh.

I don't think my partner would have an issue with the colour although he might urge me away from over doing it and getting pink integral appliances etc as it's a bit marmite. I know someone with a pink kitchen though and it's gorgeous.

knittingaddict · 14/10/2021 09:14

Not for me, but I've seen pastel coloured walls that look great in a kitchen. For some reason I don't think that kitchen looks at all good with pink walls. It could be the lighting or the combination of the units and the walls, but it really doesn't go together that well. It wouldn't inspire me either.

@Reallyimeanreally2022

Because it’s been ingrained in society for so many years that pink will always be associated with girls rather than boys.

It’s getting better in that it’s now seen cool for boys to wear pink and with the whims woke movement, but there will still be a majority of guys older than say 40 that would agree with the the OP DH.

TableFlowerss · 14/10/2021 09:15

whole

Flickeringgreenlight · 14/10/2021 09:22

Definitely girly 👍🏻 it's not a negative though, unless you don't like girlie, then it is 😂

CrackersDontMatter · 14/10/2021 09:23

@MrsTerryPratchett

Oh and if he uses 'girlie' as an insult, I'd think twice about him.
Quite.

I don't really like pale pink personally, I do like deep pinks but it's not my kitchen. I wouldn't choose it but neither do I think it's awful or overly feminine.

boobot1 · 14/10/2021 09:36

The beige splashback and pink walls really clash

Ticksallboxes · 14/10/2021 10:39

It's very pretty but screams Barbie kitchen to me. I think YABU to expect your DH to just allow you to get it.

Can't you get something a bit more neutral and just add some pink, girlie accessories?
