To think this kitchen is lovely and not too girlie?

We are thinking about getting our kitchen done and looking for some inspiration. I've found one that I absolutely love, but my husband thinks it's minging and too 'girlie' for a man to live in.

AIBU to think this is gorgeous and not too feminine?

I hate it . The worksurface is wood (which in my experience means it will look awful in a couple of years and will be high maintenance and covered in protective surfaces eg mats to protect from stains. Wood also looks thin and cheap.

shakehandswithdanger · 14/10/2021 04:33

I'm not surprised he thinks it's feminine. I'd suggest another colour to replace the pink. I don't think your husband's opinion is outlandish or unreasonable.

Canigoonroblox · 14/10/2021 04:47

I think the kitchen is lovely. I have just ordered pale blue tiles for my kitchen. Now I’m worried it’s a boys kitchen and that I can’t like both pink and blue. Painted walls in kitchens are great as you can change the colour to update easily.

Shoxfordian · 14/10/2021 06:06

He sounds a little problematic
Any other things real men should or shouldn’t do?

Marvellousmadness · 14/10/2021 06:50

Its not too " girlie" for a man
But the pink is very specific. And overpowering. I dont like it all all. So i could imagine him not liking it either. But saying it is too girlie is just immature.

esloquehay · 14/10/2021 06:52

The pink is hideous. The rest of the kitchen is fine.

MiddlesexGirl · 14/10/2021 06:56

@Runkle

YABU to think it's gorgeous. That paint colour is awful. There's much better ways of doing pink like on these pics. We have Dulux Perfectly Taupe in our kitchen which is kind of pinky/brown in a certain light.
Those tiles look awful to me and a bugger to keep clean!
Glitterybug · 14/10/2021 07:04

It looks like a Barbie Dream house kitchen. Not in a good way. Why shouldn't he get a say in decorating the kitchen? Presumably it's his house too

martingrowler · 14/10/2021 07:30

I don't understand the kitchen in the OP. It doesn't look done to me. So you've got the white vinyl cupboards and oak tops, then rose gold handles added to the cupboards. The chairs, floor and surfaces all clash. The two separate sets of light fittings clash. None of the appliances match and the black chopping board looks out of place next to all the delicate muted colours.

Saying all that, actually really like it, it looks homely and cosy. But I can't see it as a kitchen that I'd pick out to replicate as it's all over the place in terms of style.

I guess it's the pink walls your husband doesn't like. Is there a darker, more dusky pink that you like? Or how about a sage or pistachio green?

BatshitCrazyWoman · 14/10/2021 07:34

I don't like it, if you're going to the expense of redoing a kitchen, integrated dishwasher, washing machine etc look 'cleaner' to my eye. I don't like pink at all, but it could easily be painted another colour.

Why don't you pick out what it is you love - the units, the island, the colour, and have him pick out what he doesn't like. See if you can compromise. (I live on my own, so I don't have to!)

I think that's an induction hob, not a chopping board.
Dojacatpaws · 14/10/2021 07:36

To be fair I'd probably use the phrase 'too blokey' or too masculine to describe decor

Procrastination4 · 14/10/2021 07:37

I’d object to it for three reasons (and none of them are to do with the pink/rose gold colours, of which I’m not a fan) :

The floor and worktop are dreadful together as they are different colours of wood. If you are going for a wooden worktop, opting for a different floor covering, and vice versa would be the safest bet.

The room isn’t big enough to take an island and is far too cramped as a result.

Biggest negative by far though is the planning-no work triangle there. What’s even worse is the fact that the hob and the oven are so far apart. So, look at the amount of walking you’d be doing to move from sink to hob to oven to fridge.

A kitchen is an expensive investment. You want something that is practical, user friendly and won’t date. I’d be going back to the drawing board again if I were you.

He's a knob. Also it looks a wee bit like our kitchen which my husband picked. What is "girlie" about it? can you only operate it if you have a uterus?

pussycatlickinglollyices · 14/10/2021 07:39

@Miraloma

As in he's worried his penis will fall off if he goes into it?
😂😂
Wazzzzzzzup · 14/10/2021 07:43

My barbie house kitchen and bedroom had same pink. So while not necessarily girly, it's like a doll house pink in my mind. I don't like pink. I wouldn't want this one. I am with him in a way

MimosaFields · 14/10/2021 07:44

He has to use it as much s you and it's an expensive investment so you'd better find a colour you both like

^I agree

What a tenuous grasp of identity your husband has

Disagreement over a kitchen should be least of your worries OP

It’s not to my taste, and dusky pink and rose gold is very ageing, it’s already had its day. However, I’ve got very strong ideas about interior design, but always run schemes past DH. After all, he lives there too and pays half (or more) of the decorating costs. You may have to compromise! How about a more toned down pink, such as F&B’s Dead Salmon or Sulking Room Pink, and swap out the rose gold for antique brass? I love more feminine and romantic shades for areas such as bedrooms, dressing rooms etc. but I’d go for something which reflects both your personalities in a more public room such as a kitchen.

That said, DH has yet to disagree, but I always discuss it with him and if he said a flat no, I’d look for something we both like Smile

Reallyimeanreally2022 · 14/10/2021 08:09

But I can’t imagine being attracted to a man who says a kitchen is “too girly” 🤮

RockinHorseShit · 14/10/2021 08:18

I think the girly bit is him just trying to justify his dislike of it when you aren't letting him.

It's grim, I'd never walk into that & think you'd just spent a fortune on a new kitchen. It looks unfinished & cheap

So he’s thick as well!

Can’t articulate to his wife sensible reasons to dislike.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 14/10/2021 08:20

Omg what is it with these stupid kitchen designers putting hobs on the island? This is the second design I've seen like this on Mumsnet. Even a 2 year old could foresee the multiple issues with that!
