To think this kitchen is lovely and not too girlie?

We are thinking about getting our kitchen done and looking for some inspiration. I've found one that I absolutely love, but my husband thinks it's minging and too 'girlie' for a man to live in.

AIBU to think this is gorgeous and not too feminine?

I'd really advise against the copper. Total fad which I now regret!

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 13/10/2021 22:28

@wheretherainblows have you gone onto Pinterest and searched the sort of kitchen you’d like?

I can’t believe you have, if the pictures you’ve posted in your OP are the best you could come up with.

@midsummabreak

I agree with *@MrsTerryPratchett* its not ok to use ‘girlie’ as an swipe
I don't like DMs new kitchen as I think it looks too Scandi. Why is Scandi somehow derogatory or a "swipe" just because it's not my taste. That's exactly how he's used "girly".

It's too girly for him.
Hers is too Scandi for me.

That's describing the style, not being offensive. You're allowed not to like retro, or minimal, opulent, girly, scandi, futuristic...

Why?
DoYouLikeOwls · 13/10/2021 22:35

It is girly - like a 3 year old girls dolls house kitchen.

Who is offended?

PanicBuyingSprouts · 13/10/2021 22:36

There a lot that I don't like about the kitchen, the colour of the walls is probably the easiest to sort out.

BloodyTinaNextdoorAgain · 13/10/2021 22:36

There are some nice parts of it separately but altogether it looks a bit of a mess. Like bits have been added over time. Not designed to be part of a whole.
The pink clashes with the worktop and the splashback too so it all looks a bit too unmatched there for me. The shade of pink is a bit cheap looking too, like a kids bedroom shade.
I know a lot of people are saying having appliances hidden is silly but if you're designing a kitchen and can make it look more planned and tidy then why wouldn't you?
The fridge doesn't look right where it is and that oven looks like a big old filling in a mouth full of cabinet teeth where it is.
I love the wood but none of it looks quite right with those cabinet fronts.
Take the idea to a proper kitchen designer and they'll probably be able to come up with a compromise that you both like by understanding fit, latouts and colour wheels properly.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/10/2021 22:36

Pink is fine. But that pink is pretty much the same colour as the kitchen in a student let I once lived in in the late 80s.

As as for the monstrosity all pink kitchen a few posts ago. I have no words.

People will always find a way Grin
Classica · 13/10/2021 22:37

I wouldn't be fussed with him saying something was 'too girlie'. The shabby chic aesthetic of 10 years ago, Cath Kidston prints, bunting etc. always felt too girlie for me. Similarly stainless steel kitchens feel too sterile and morgue like. And framed football shirts for eg. feel too blokey.

Classica · 13/10/2021 22:40

If a man said talking about your emotions was too girlie that's another matter. But on paint choices it's fine!

QueenBee52 · 13/10/2021 22:40

@FatBettyintheCoop

DH loves our pink and grey kitchen and he’s a rufty tufty Glaswegian. Grin

we call that purple 🤣

dogsrock15 · 13/10/2021 22:43

similar to my kitchen. I have blush pink ( a lighter pink than the pic) on one back wall stretching from kitchen to extension. The rest off colour white. oak worktops with matching floor and white cupboards. Oh likes it too. I have a few blush pink accessories too to bring it together.

Blacksheepcat · 13/10/2021 22:46

Who does the majority of the cooking? Their choice.

Lilymossflower · 13/10/2021 22:48

I think it's a beautiful kitchen, you should get it but trade the pastel pink walls for bold flamingo pink Wink

Dousnt he know that pink used to be the default masculine colour for boys anyway ? Apparently because its a bit like red which is a strong colour for men Wink and blue was for girls because it is more soft and dainty Grin

toconclude · 13/10/2021 22:50

Not to my personal taste but not "girly" whatever the hell that means. What does he think a suitably butch kitchen should look like?
Sounds like you have a good ( by which I mean bad) ol' fashioned sexist on your hands

midsummabreak · 13/10/2021 22:52

It does sound like Op’s Dh was using the term ‘girlie’ in the way it is so often used, with a strongly negative intent and infantilising

Voice0fReason · 13/10/2021 22:55

It doesn't matter why he doesn't like it.
It does matter that he just doesn't like it.

Look for something that you both like.

Feedingthebirds1 · 13/10/2021 22:58

Girlie or feminine, whatever - it's not just the pink, it's the several itsy bitsy lights which aren't actually doing much in the way of actually giving out light, so not much use for a kitchen. A good overhead light and possibly good spot lighting over the area where you'll be chopping, peeling etc. is more my idea of kitchen lighting.
Plus the candles on the middle bench and the orchid.

I don't think he thinks his bits are going to drop off, and I wouldn't like a kitchen that resembled a man cave either. But to me that's a kitchen for more show, less cooking.

Hydrate · 13/10/2021 22:59

The pink walls are probably why he sees it that way
Photoshop the colour to a sage green or grey and see if he likes it then maybe?

GreyhoundG1rl · 13/10/2021 23:05

It's a Barbie kitchen, tbh. Doesn't look like it's intended for grownups.

TableFlowerss · 13/10/2021 23:05

He’s clearly put off by the pink as he sees that as ‘girly colour’. People can disagree that it’s a ‘girly colour’ and argue it’s not, but that’s irrelevant in this situation. He thinks it is girly and it’s very unlikely his mind will be changed.

TatianaBis · 13/10/2021 23:14

I don't think it's girlie but it's very tatty.

MiddlesexGirl · 13/10/2021 23:16

Looks lovely to me .... though on my phone it looks more like a slubby lavender than a soft pink so that could be colouring my opinion. Love the lights too.
Agree the appliances need to be integrated. Other than that it looks a fairly modern design, easy to keep clean, stylish and just a little bit different.

MiddlesexGirl · 13/10/2021 23:17

And I can totally understand why you wouldn't want sage green or grey - very drab. So that may be a battle to be had with dh!
