To think this kitchen is lovely and not too girlie?

We are thinking about getting our kitchen done and looking for some inspiration. I've found one that I absolutely love, but my husband thinks it's minging and too 'girlie' for a man to live in.

AIBU to think this is gorgeous and not too feminine?

@TatianaBis

I don't think it's girlie but it's very tatty.
What a horrid thing to say about someone's kitchen. Doesn't look tatty at all.
TheEvilPea · 13/10/2021 23:31

@ConstanceGracy

I like it but the colour scheme is more feminine.
How can a colour be feminine? Does it have eggs or carry babies through gestation and give birth?

Baffling.

Staffy1 · 13/10/2021 23:33

I love that shade of pink, but it probably is a bit girly.

TheEvilPea · 13/10/2021 23:35

@BoredZelda

Loving people here trying to pretend pink isn’t a feminine colour.

It’s his house too OP, if he doesn’t like it, find a compromise.

Again, what is feminine about it? What have colours got to do with sex? Confused

Are you aware that colour associations are purely cultural phenomenons, varying across both time and countries? In some countries brides wear red. In Victorian times in the UK baby boys wore pink and girls wore blue. There is nothing innate about a colour related to someone's sex, and people who think there is are bonkers.

TheEvilPea · 13/10/2021 23:36

Having said all of that OP, I think the kitchen is ugly. But that's just personal taste.

Offmyfence · 13/10/2021 23:37

@FatBettyintheCoop

DH loves our pink and grey kitchen and he’s a rufty tufty Glaswegian. Grin
That's awesome!

Sorry OP, not liking your one!

fashionSOS · 13/10/2021 23:38

I don't think the kitchen itself is girly, but the colour choices are.

It's the combination of the pink walls, the cream units and those lights in the middle - it's very warm, and stereotypically feminine.

If you changed the colours to something either more neutral or bolder, you might find he doesn't object to the kitchen units - it might just be the colour.

I don't think @FatBettyintheCoop's kitchen does look overly girly and that one has pink - but it's a stronger shade of pink, and it's backed up by dark grey. The colours in your picture are paler and warmer.

End of the day though, it's just personal taste.

GreyhoundG1rl · 13/10/2021 23:38

Yes. And very few men would choose a pale pink kitchen. Probably because of said cultural conditioning, but there we are 🤷🏻‍♀️

TheEvilPea · 13/10/2021 23:39

@Staffy1

I love that shade of pink, but it probably is a bit girly.
Lol! Another one. What about it shouts "vaginas!" or "mestruators" (Angry) at you? I don't understand. If anything a darker pink or blood red would be more appropriate as an association. Grin
Runkle · 13/10/2021 23:39

YABU to think it's gorgeous. That paint colour is awful. There's much better ways of doing pink like on these pics. We have Dulux Perfectly Taupe in our kitchen which is kind of pinky/brown in a certain light.

Very few people would choose one because it doesn't look very nice. Still don't understand what this has to do with whether someone has a penis or vagina. I mean, I guess more men have colour blindness than women so would see pastel shades as grey so not like it on that basis, maybe? But that's a reach.
GreyhoundG1rl · 13/10/2021 23:43

Yeah, you've said. You keep saying. Bet you don't know any man with a pink kitchen, though Grin

FWBNC · 13/10/2021 23:45

@Miraloma

As in he's worried his penis will fall off if he goes into it?
Is he not allowed an opinion on one of the main rooms in his house?

As it is I think it's very 'girlie'. I like the vibe for a bedroom, but not a kitchen.

As for people saying you can choose your own paint, I'm sure she knows that, but she's asking what people think of it how it is. The OP is asking what people think of that kitchen, not just the cabinets!

OzziePopPop · 13/10/2021 23:53

I like it, but then my kitchen is that colour. DH’s manhood is still (mostly) intact. I have cupcake blinds and clock and pastel kitchen bits so it fits together nicely

Lullaby88 · 14/10/2021 00:02

The person who cooks more should decide.Grin

PrincessNutella · 14/10/2021 00:07

Um, yes, it is quite girly. And a bit clashy, in my opinion. In any case, he doesn't like it, so there's no use arguing why it's good. Find something you both like. After all, don't you WANT him to want to spend time in the kitchen?

TheEvilPea · 14/10/2021 00:24

Tbh I have my own house so don't have to consult anybody on their opinions on interior design. I've never thought to ask any of the men I know what they think about pink as part of a kitchen colour scheme. I've also never asked any of the women know that question. It's not something that tends to come up. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Derbee · 14/10/2021 00:32

I think the pink walls, and all the rose gold accents are a bit twee. Surely it doesn’t matter why, if he doesn’t like that style then you both choose something else, that you like

LaurenKelsey · 14/10/2021 00:50

My kitchen is all done up in pastels, including the appliances. I live alone so I can happily choose whatever I like. I love pink.

TedMullins · 14/10/2021 01:03

Is he worried he’ll catch the gay from a kitchen?

Derbee · 14/10/2021 02:37

@TedMullins grow up. Maybe he just doesn’t like the look of a pink kitchen with chintzy accents everywhere. Doesn’t make him ignorant or homophobic.

ElizaDarcysDeeds · 14/10/2021 02:48

It's too pink for me.
I could see it having a 'girlie' marketing campaign because ads rely on stereotypes.
I also wouldn't choose a kitchen my DP hated. Kitchens need to be a joint decision in our house.

NiceGerbil · 14/10/2021 02:51

Have what you like OP. It's your kitchen do what YOU would like. Obv as long as it isn't totally arrgh to any DP etc.

I think hating pink usually is grown out of by the time you're the age to buy kitchens?

It's just a colour.

I get the association with little girl, I really loathe the pretty much universal now, enormous divide between stuff 'for girls/ boys' that starts at birth now.

The negative associations though are, I suppose. Pink = girls = awful. That doesn't happen with blue does it!

OP just get whatever makes you happy!!

I'm a feminist of the apparently crazed type and me and DH bedroom is a dusky pink. He was not keen. But it's north facing and everything we tried felt so cold.

He grudgingly agrees it's the only colour (we tried s lot!) that makes it feel warm and cosy.

Go for it! I like it btw. Bit different. Nice.

wombat1a · 14/10/2021 02:55

Design looks okay, the don't like the colours.

SunShinesBrightly · 14/10/2021 03:39

What a ridiculous comment. Straight from the Bernard Manning school of ‘comedy’.
