Insulate Britain - a bunch of loonies or rightful cause?

EerieSilence · 13/10/2021 10:53

I'm watching the videos with Insulate Britain people blocking the motorists, people driving their children to school, hospitals or simply going to work.
I don't get the cause and the way they chose. I'm a leftist myself and participated at demonstrations but this, I really don't understand.
How is blocking normal people doing their normal business going to achieve anything?
If it happened to me, I would be pissed off and wouldn't care one iota about the cause. Why don't they protest in front of Boris's expensive nursery, blocking ways to Queen's residences and parliament but instead target people who didn't cause the problem?

Absolute selfish morons. Blocking ambulances is beyond appalling, they should be arrested and held accountable. Or even better have their details recorded and when they ring for an ambulance they can be told where to go.

00100001 · 13/10/2021 10:57

They've ruined their credibility and impact by stopping/delaying emergency services.

Now everyone thinks they're selfish cunts and won't care about their cause.

Sirzy · 13/10/2021 10:57

There a bunch of idiots. I saw one interviewed on TV who doesn’t have his own home insulated or double glazed. I heard of another who has spent a summer a few years back driving around Europe.

Hypocritics and most of them are just jumping on a bandwagon

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/10/2021 10:57

loonies

Generallystruggling · 13/10/2021 10:59

Modern day Suffragettes imo.

orinocosfavoritecake · 13/10/2021 10:59

Well, from their perspective (and David Attenborough’s) we need to shift how we get energy and quickly, or we’re piling on misery for hundreds of millions of people and making the Earth a worse place for humanity for the rest of time. So the stakes are pretty high.

And it’s how protest movements work - the suffragettes and the US civil rights movement were widely regarded as a pain in the neck too - they got results because they were annoying. Trade unions strike because strikes make life harder and pile on pressure on employers.

hotdogsjumpingfrogs · 13/10/2021 11:00

Can't it be both?

Improving insulation in the UK's aging housing stock would improve health, reduce fuel poverty, and reduce carbon emissions/use of fossil fuels. Is ridiculous that it's not super high on the government agenda.

Tactics of insulate Britain are terrible. No idea why they think this is a good way to promote their cause...

EmeraldShamrock · 13/10/2021 11:01

Woke out of touch with RL somewhat privileged.
Their time could be better spent insulating actual homes instead of disruptive actions against the normal public.

ConcernedAuntie · 13/10/2021 11:02

Yes, we need to insulate our homes and give less well off people the means to insulate their homes. It will save energy and hopefully reduce bills.

However, the way these people are going about it makes me want to rip out our loft insultation and cavity wall insulation and go and burn tyres in their front gardens.

Soubriquet · 13/10/2021 11:02

A bunch of bloody loonies. They might have a good cause but the way they are going about it is not right and will just be putting people off.

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 13/10/2021 11:04

They aren't a pain in the neck, they are dangerous, kids have missed chemo, a lady is now paralysed, they don't let ambulances through, there was one poor woman begging to be let through to get to her elderly mother in an emergency.... it goes on and on.

Any point they had is lost when they don't even do the best for the environment themselves and their spokesperson is embarrassing as fuck.

They are doing more harm than good for their cause.

AnkleDeep · 13/10/2021 11:06

#dangerous loonies.

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 13/10/2021 11:08

They don't even have a plan AFAIK, they want "a meaningful statement from the government" what does that even mean? There are already insulation schemes, what can the government say that will appease them?

I think they are just narcissistic wankers who want to feel important and pat each other on the back and feel like they have made a difference with the least possible effort. Self important knobbers.

I really hate them

SusieBob · 13/10/2021 11:09

What they are actually calling for is perfectly reasonable. How they are going about it, on the other hand....

ChaToilLeam · 13/10/2021 11:11

Their aims are laudable. Increasing energy efficiency and reducing energy waste benefits everyone.

Their tactics are ridiculous and off putting. They come across as agents-provocateurs. Wouldn’t surprise me if some were.

EmeraldShamrock · 13/10/2021 11:12

They are doing more harm than good for their cause.
Probably had a lot of fancy holidays abroad, ate avocado regularly. the blood diamond fruit

^where most avocados for export are produced, avocado farming is especially water-intensive. In these regions, 320 litres of water are required to grow one avocado.^ Chile.

Watchingyou2sleezes · 13/10/2021 11:15

Zealots of the new religion spouting dubious platitudes as fact.

When challenged they consistently know F all about what they're talking about and, considering how important these matters appear to be to their lives, haven't actually bothered reading anything but the media releases for various reports that have got their nickers in a twist.

If they were truly concerned with deaths amongst the poor in winter due to heating costs - they'd be in favour "fracking".

Having had for too much of my time taken up during the last year with 3 companies involved in delivering an infrastructure project to several social housing areas- the idea that such dwellings can be insulated to their desire by 2025 is both ludicrous and a smoke screen. They don't care about insulation, these goons want to impose a pre-industrial age lifestyle on everybody

MatildaIThink · 13/10/2021 11:16

They are a bunch of loons. I agree insulating homes would be a worthwhile endeavour, but pissing by people off and blocking motorways, emergency vehicles etc. is not the way to achieve that.

Also the founder is a total hypocrite, claims to care about climate change, has not and will not insulate his own home, pre-Covid he few long haul regularly etc.

You don't get the people on side you need to make something happen, by annoying and attacking those same people.

YouTubeAddict · 13/10/2021 11:17

Selfish loonies.

MephistophelesApprentice · 13/10/2021 11:21

They're giving the wretched Tories the perfect excuse to reduce avenues for legitimate protest.

Whatever their purported motivations, that alone is unforgivable.

LittleMysSister · 13/10/2021 11:22

I think their cause is a decent one but the way they are going about it is poor.

They are making everyone hate them and essentially making it so the government doesn't have to respond because the will of the people is not behind them. Effectively rendering their own demos redundant.

Thevoiceofreason2021 · 13/10/2021 11:26

Dicks

Iquitit · 13/10/2021 11:29

Their cause is a good one, but making me miss or be late for work and therefore lose income isn't really going to help me afford to insulate my home is it? Even if I was allowed to do such things by my landlord.
And all those queued cars sitting there on tick over for ages, restarting their engines umpteen times and then still completing their journeys when able isn't exactly environmentally friendly.

ForeverSinging · 13/10/2021 11:41

I'm usually pretty easy going but these people are driving me mad. I am so angry every time I see coverage of it. I dread to think what would happen if they came around our way and I encountered them. I'm completely non-violent but I'd end up arrested if they messed with me.

todaysdilemma · 13/10/2021 11:52

They're not loonies, they're just incredibly stupid and entitled with no understanding of either basic human psychology (i.e how to protest effectively) or the real environmental challenges they are fighting to resolve. It's extreme privilege that makes them confident enough to disrupt the economy without even taking the time to learn the basics!!!

If they really wanted change, they could find ways to influence and work with home builders and the Govt to find solutions and bring about the change. These aren't vulnerable, put upon people fighting for basic human rights like the suffragetes and civil rights, where they had no access to the decision makers. They can use social media to complain to companies to get a refund, they can't find clever ways to lobby and influence and gain support for the cause, using the gamut of tools at their disposal?! Blocking arterial roads was really the ONLY way to force a Govt to doing this? Bollocks.

Lazy and stupid and entitled with no strategic or innovative thinking or plan behind the cause and how best to get action taken.
