Insulate Britain - a bunch of loonies or rightful cause?

EerieSilence · 13/10/2021 10:53

I'm watching the videos with Insulate Britain people blocking the motorists, people driving their children to school, hospitals or simply going to work.
I don't get the cause and the way they chose. I'm a leftist myself and participated at demonstrations but this, I really don't understand.
How is blocking normal people doing their normal business going to achieve anything?
If it happened to me, I would be pissed off and wouldn't care one iota about the cause. Why don't they protest in front of Boris's expensive nursery, blocking ways to Queen's residences and parliament but instead target people who didn't cause the problem?

@Generallystruggling

Modern day Suffragettes imo.
What a staggeringly ignorant thing to say 😧🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️😳

@QueenBee52

How does that make her a hypocrite? Do you think she can afford to insulate everyone’s home?

you honestly cannot see the hypocrisy in her stance and her husbands now ex job 🤣

Lol/s. No.

Or maybe because her activism stops people from using one of the services her very senior husband works for? Or the fact she doesn't have to work and can sit on a road all day, stopping ordinary people from going about their day to earn money, whilst only dreaming of the sort of income her household has?

I genuinely don’t see how that makes her a hypocrite. She’s protesting the government to insulate homes, specifically social housing and commit to contribute to private homes becoming insulated to meet targets already signed up to that will benefit both the environment, peoples budgets and general health.

Fuck all to do with transport really. Granted that’s another facet of concern from an environmental POV but that’s not what they’re protesting so she’s not a hypocrite as far as I can see. How much money any of them may or may not have doesn’t really mean much either. 🤷‍♀️

AnnaSW1 · 13/10/2021 18:47

Morons who haven't even insulated their own homes.

VladmirsPoutine · 13/10/2021 18:48

It doesn't make her a hypocrite. This is such a circular argument akin to when people suggest anti-capitalists with iPhones are hypocrites as if they should be sending e-mails by printing them off and training a pigeon in understanding the A-Z.

Well the iPhone thing does, you cannot take advantage of the products and services offered by the worlds biggest capitalist corporation, whilst at the same time saying they should not be allowed to exist, if you genuinely did not think they should exist you would find an alternative.

Okay, so let’s presume all of IB can afford to insulate their homes (and who knows maybe they sit around in yak hair jumpers with hot water bottles) how does that help the remaining millions that aren’t and won’t be insulated for a variety of reasons that the government could solve?
midgedude · 13/10/2021 18:56

I don't support what they are doing but

The sad state of affairs is that peaceful none disruptive action on its own wont change anything.

People have been advising the government for decades and fuck all has happened and the result is that our children's lives will be harsher , more dangerous, more expensive. My child is more likely to die young because of the state level inaction over the last 25 years

Look for example not just the suffragettes but also the Brixton riots , the mass trespassing

Cherrysoup · 13/10/2021 19:03

As a motorist this morning asked ‘Don’t you work?”

Idiots who have just pissed people off. Their actions will not change anything. Pointless. Their aim will not be fulfilled, they may as well just give it up now.

MamsellMarie · 13/10/2021 19:03

I can remember maybe 10 years ago people having their houses insulated - subsidised by the gov - I am in Scotland maybe it just happened there. They put foamy stuff in the walls. Turns out a lot of housing shoudn't have foamy stuff in the walls but still......

Religious zealots for the new age.

Neron · 13/10/2021 19:18

Different options, that's a wonderful thing, but i personally think it's hypocritical. This key woman is involved in a lot of disruption for both ER and IB.

The train issue - how did the protestors get there? OK for them to use the network at their convenience, with the use of the free TFL card she'd have, and the TFL income to allow her to swan off and create chaos and misery to ordinary workers of course.

How are they getting to the motorways? Why aren't these protestors targeting the people that can change things? Why not glue themselves to number 10, or the houses of Parliament, or outside their local MPs office/House. The government doesn't give a stuff about the little people stuck, or the now paralysed woman, or the stopping of emergency services. There is also an insulation plan, we got our loft insulated for minimal because of one of their schemes last year?

10yearwarranty · 13/10/2021 19:26

These inconsiderate wankers have been turning up at a large roundabout near where I live. Someone will get hurt soon. They can only hold up so many people trying to get to hospital, interviews, losing money on work before it explodes.

DoleWhipFloat · 13/10/2021 19:31

Lunatics. I was watching some videos on Twitter. They remind me of lemmings. Except, instead of walking off a cliff, they keep running in front of lorries.

EverExhaustedBudgie · 13/10/2021 19:36

@Dojacatpaws

It's pretty annoying but surely some people can change their mode of transport whilst the protests are on
It's really not that simple. They don't warn people when they are about to protest. They just appear at the side of the road. People would need to use alternative transport for the foreseeable future as no one knows how long they will continue.
EverExhaustedBudgie · 13/10/2021 19:38

I absolutely agree with their message, but I absolutely disagree with the way they are delivering it. They are causing issues (in some cases they are causing life threatening issues) for the very people they are expecting support from. They should aim their message directly towards the gov... inconvenience some MP's. The leader of the cause needs to take a a long hard look at they way he speaks to those he wants support from. Screeching his message and becoming defensive and condescending when anyone asks him questions, is sure fire way to lose listeners.

Oh it's been around in England forever, investment funds were set up to hoover up the government money, lots of cowboy double glazing companies went from fitting windows a few 100 houses a year to 10000s of cavity wall installs a year... Again switched on rich people got rich at Joe Public's expense
Jellykat · 13/10/2021 19:48

I completely agree with what they're saying, however pissing off Joe Public is not the way to go..

Neither is getting Joe Public to sign a nice neat campaign letter "urging the government" to tackle climate change, energy etc etc.

Change, and I mean real change, is almost always messy.

MyPatronusIsACat · 13/10/2021 20:08

I said this on another thread. (After someone had said 'what a time to do this, after the gruelling pandemic, peoples lives have been so hard and they add to the stress and sheer worry for everyone. I hate them.') And shall repeat it...

They are pure vile scum. Cruel, thoughtless, don't give a fuck about anyone, and probably don't even know what they bastard hell they are protesting about.

One of the rancid bunch doesn't even have insulation in his own house, and he admitted it on national TV. They are hypocrites, and real-life trolls. Just stirring the pot for attention. Vile, vile, VILE

Jellykat · 13/10/2021 20:09

Who said anything about a 'nice neat letter' VladmirsPoutine?
at the end of the day Joe public don't make the big decisions, we can individually do our bit, but its not going to be enough is it?
Target the big guys! is what i'm saying....

XingMing · 13/10/2021 20:26

Most of the worlds pollution does not come from China. China emits around 29% of global CO2, against having 18% of the world's population. It's per capita emissions are half of those of the US, China's are about 30% higher than ours, however that is direct emissions. What we have actually done in most of the West is to offshore our emissions, the majority of the emissions from China are actually them making stuff for us, everything from computers to bikes, car parts, clothes, toys, furniture etc. If we made those things in the UK, or we accounted for the CO2 emissions of our imported goods our per capita CO2 emissions would be far higher than theirs.

Actually, Australia has the heaviest carbon footprint on the planet, thanks to all the coal they dig out for the Chinese, who account for 59% approximately of all emissions.

Unless you are staying home, wearing wool and woad, and using the lumber harvested from your smallholding using hand tools....... I really don't want to be preached at.

My house is insulated, I use energy carefully (because I am thrifty) and we rarely get on a plane. But the eejits in Insulate Britain take idiocy to new depths. If anyone knows one, please pass my message along.

REDHERO · 13/10/2021 20:43

Most of the seem to be retired, educated people who have found their cause. I imagine they have learnt that writing letters and singing petitions doesn't work. I imagine that they see being on the news daily as getting their message across.
However, it turns off the person on the street who needs to get to work, children to school and people to hospital etc.
