To have burst out laughing at movie quote DP?

DP has a habit of saying things as though he’s in a movie. He doesn’t do it jokingly - example:

He was telling me about when he was younger and spent the weekends going to car meets in car parks (boy racers 🙄) and he suddenly stopped talking, shook his head and said “man, that summer was immense” - I burst out laughing and started singing “the summer of 69” - it just sounded so American and movie like!

Another one - I was saying how much I’m missing Thailand (it’s been a while since I’ve travelled, first world problems I know) and he took my hand and stared into my eyes and said “we will get there again, believe me, we’ll make it back” 😂😂 he was being dead serious, I burst out laughing as it just sounded so out of context!

Anyway, last night - we’d gone to the local for something to eat. We were sat in the beer garden, it was lovely and warm. He suddenly stood up, held out his hand and said “walk with me?” 😂😂😂 I almost choked on my bloody drink, he said “what’s funny this time?” So I said “why do you keep talking as though we’re in a movie??” And he looked all embarrassed and laughed and said “I don’t, I just wondered if you fancied a walk!” So I said “so say that then! The movie quotes just make me laugh!”

Fast forward to bed time, he stood up, stretched and said “well, I’m going to hit the hay, tomorrow will be hard on everyone” 😂 I said “why will it??” So he replied “I just mean Fridays are always a ball ache as people just want to fast forward to weekend”. Ffs why the dramatic movie quote?? AIBU to find this so funny and cringey at the same time?

Yup that would have me bursting out laughing too. Is this a new thing?

pumpkinfan · 08/10/2021 06:41

This sounds hilarious. But don't make too big a deal of it, he might stop!

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 08/10/2021 06:43

Omg that would crack me up!!!!

ComDummings · 08/10/2021 06:43

He sounds kind of intense! Maybe reply as though you’re in a film too Grin

Balonzette · 08/10/2021 06:44

😂😂😂

HelloDulling · 08/10/2021 06:46

I love it. You need to up your movie-speak game though.

Nobranothanks · 08/10/2021 06:46

😂 I'd be replying in a similar style whilst peeing myself laughing.

Sounds hilarious

CarryOnNurse20 · 08/10/2021 06:46

I would just enjoy these weird quotes. I’d definitely laugh though!!

OdettySpaghetti · 08/10/2021 06:46

It’s not a new thing, he’s done it ever since we got together but it’s definitely getting worse! The first time we went on holiday we went to the beach, he suddenly sat down on the sand, stared out to sea, shook his head and said “you know, in all my 33 years, I’ve never seen the ocean” 😂

Reply with actual movie quotes?

Or, Robert Redford, I'd love to walk.

He's an earnest man, they can be hard to take seriously when they pull it out in normal situations. But I'll bet you, if things get tough, he'd be the only person who you would want to get you though it.

Sunseeker90 · 08/10/2021 06:47

He sounds lovely and it must irk him when you laugh at him. Especially as he said what funny now.

mrcow · 08/10/2021 06:48

Just get up today and tell him, “I love the smell of toothpaste in the morning”.

Auroreforet · 08/10/2021 06:48

You've got a keeper.
He sounds lovely.

EarringsandLipstick · 08/10/2021 06:51

I mean, I get what you are saying and it is a bit cringe but I think you sound kinda mean.

You know he does this & you keep laughing at him. I'd feel horrible if I was being laughed at by my partner.

Fdksyihfd · 08/10/2021 06:54

I get what you’re saying but if it’s how he’s always talked then I think it sounds quite mean to laugh at him and make him feel embarrassed. It’s just the way he talks.

Wilkolampshade · 08/10/2021 06:54

Yeah, he sounds OK. If its not a recent affectation and just who he is... don't laugh at him.

Changednamehere56 · 08/10/2021 06:54

Could be autistic scripting.

ofwarren · 08/10/2021 06:57

I thought of autistic scripting too!

OdettySpaghetti · 08/10/2021 07:00

Here’s the thing, it’s funny because he’s not like that!! The movie quotes seem so far removed from his actual personality that it’s hilarious! If he spoke all the time as if he was in a movie then yeah, I could understand it but these quotes just come out of nowhere and do NOT match his personality!
He goes from Rik Mayall to Robert Redford just like that

This made me very happy. Sounds a bit like my best friends partner. These moments are hilarious for sharing!

Northernparent68 · 08/10/2021 07:01

Laughing at someone is rude, and apart from the first and last one none of them are really movie quotes.

Saying walk with me is funny ? We’ll get there is hilarious?

BreatheAndFocus · 08/10/2021 07:14

Nothing wrong with movie quotes, but if it’s because he’s having to fake a personality, that’s bad. Is he ever just normal? Some people have a persona and very little underneath.

Merrylegs87 · 08/10/2021 07:20

Yes it’s quite cringey but it feels a bit mean to laugh at him for it.

lobsteroll · 08/10/2021 07:23

Aww, he sounds very earnest 🤣🤣

It would crack me up too but I do think it's quite sweet.

The "walk with me" sounds like he was trying to be romantic 🤣

Watchingyou2sleezes · 08/10/2021 07:23

@Auroreforet

You've got a keeper. He sounds lovely.
😂🤣
