To have burst out laughing at movie quote DP?

OdettySpaghetti · 08/10/2021 06:34

DP has a habit of saying things as though he’s in a movie. He doesn’t do it jokingly - example:

He was telling me about when he was younger and spent the weekends going to car meets in car parks (boy racers 🙄) and he suddenly stopped talking, shook his head and said “man, that summer was immense” - I burst out laughing and started singing “the summer of 69” - it just sounded so American and movie like!

Another one - I was saying how much I’m missing Thailand (it’s been a while since I’ve travelled, first world problems I know) and he took my hand and stared into my eyes and said “we will get there again, believe me, we’ll make it back” 😂😂 he was being dead serious, I burst out laughing as it just sounded so out of context!

Anyway, last night - we’d gone to the local for something to eat. We were sat in the beer garden, it was lovely and warm. He suddenly stood up, held out his hand and said “walk with me?” 😂😂😂 I almost choked on my bloody drink, he said “what’s funny this time?” So I said “why do you keep talking as though we’re in a movie??” And he looked all embarrassed and laughed and said “I don’t, I just wondered if you fancied a walk!” So I said “so say that then! The movie quotes just make me laugh!”

Fast forward to bed time, he stood up, stretched and said “well, I’m going to hit the hay, tomorrow will be hard on everyone” 😂 I said “why will it??” So he replied “I just mean Fridays are always a ball ache as people just want to fast forward to weekend”. Ffs why the dramatic movie quote?? AIBU to find this so funny and cringey at the same time?

Grin that's so funny and endearing. You've made my morning, OP!

KingsleyShacklebolt · 08/10/2021 09:21

I think you need to look up the word "quote" and compare that with "speaking in the style of".

Laughing at him is just nasty and rude. Poor guy.

Morgantowers · 08/10/2021 09:25

Please tell us more I literally have tears in my eyes from laughing.

Claudethecat · 08/10/2021 09:28

I think he sounds lovely, a bit eccentric.

backoffice · 08/10/2021 09:29

I don’t get it. You just sound horrible. He’ll become really insecure.

Unless he’s speaking in a weird accent, these just sound like nice thoughts he’s sharing with you.

Catflapkitkat · 08/10/2021 09:29

It's sounds a bit try hard to me - but if it amuses you, all good

TracyLords · 08/10/2021 09:29

But what if.... you are in a movie and you don’t know it?????

lottiegarbanzo · 08/10/2021 09:29

He sounds quite sweet and rather childlike. Does he actually think like this? In simplistic technicolour scenes with a single track narrative?

Or is it just in occasional moments, when it feels to him that things are beautifully simple and he 'celebrates' that by taking pleasure in expressing it as a one-liner?

HuckleberryJam · 08/10/2021 09:30

If he mentions it's raining say "Is it? I hadn't noticed" as you stare into his eyes like andi mcdowell from 4 weddings

Practicebeingpatient · 08/10/2021 09:32

I know a girl whose 'friends' have set up a Twitter account called ShitKatieSays to post some of her quirky comments. She takes it in good part and will occasionally post on it herself to be seen as a good sport but I know that deep down it hurts her.

Don't be that person to your DP.

Excited101 · 08/10/2021 09:34

I would have thought he’s ND, it sounds quite sweet but I can see how it could give you the ick… don’t laugh at him though, he’ll get a complex!

HappyDays101010 · 08/10/2021 09:34

I also find it sad that this guy is being laughed at whenever he tries to be more expressive to his partner

This. Was really surprised to see so many LOLZ type responses.

CyclingIsNotOuting · 08/10/2021 09:35

Live and let die, I say.

Booboosweet · 08/10/2021 09:36

He's just talking? Technically you could say any sentence sounds like a movie quote.

SoupDragon · 08/10/2021 09:39

it’s definitely getting worse!

Or maybe you've become less tolerant.

maddening · 08/10/2021 09:39

He sounds lovely, cherish him

HarrietsChariot · 08/10/2021 09:42

I think you should split and go and find yourself someone with no sense of humour.

golddustwomen · 08/10/2021 09:43

This is brilliant Grin he sounds brilliant Grin

Can we have more please?

Bluntness100 · 08/10/2021 09:43

Personally I think you’re prone to it a bit yourself. Missing Thailand? Seriously? I’d get it if you were Thai or lived there for an extensive period, but if you like a holiday there then the pair of you are perfectly suited. Especially when you count in this thread about such a minor thing and all the emoticons.

lottiegarbanzo · 08/10/2021 09:43

I do think the important question is whether you find it sweet but funny, or really cringey. Laughing with, or at.

knittingaddict · 08/10/2021 09:44

Also to those saying quote things back at him, please don't. He isn't actually quoting real film scripts. The op just thinks he sounds a bit pretentious. If the op's posts are accurate then the boyfriend doesn't know that he sounds like he is quoting from a film and it's not deliberate on his part. Making it into a game is not going to make this man feel better about himself and it will come across as mocking.

Have some compassion. He might not suit everyone, but laughing at him or playing games with him when he doesn't even know he is playing is just plain nasty.

I'm not even sure that the op is painting a real picture in any case. Perhaps she's just a bit lacking in the vocabulary department and can't keep up.

SunnySideDownBriefly · 08/10/2021 09:47

Ooh, he's not gearing up to propose is he? How long have you been together? Sounds like he's practicing lines.

I think it's funny and I would totally take the piss out of him. You need to do this as a responsible partner...he can't go around thinking he can speak like that seriously Grin

KurtWilde · 08/10/2021 09:48

OP would love it in our house then, laugh a minute between me and my Yorkshire colloquialisms, DD11 sounding like she's making a YouTube video every time she talks, toddler thinks he's a dinosaur so makes raptor sounds when he's playing. Not to mention all the actual movie quotes me and my my older DC throw into every day conversation 😂

Soggychip · 08/10/2021 09:50

think you should split and go and find yourself someone with no sense of humour.

But from what the OP says he isn’t doing it ironically or to try be funny.

knittingaddict · 08/10/2021 09:50

Yes this.

Just proves my point that the op may lack an appreciation of words, speech and grammar and perhaps they aren't compatible.
