To have burst out laughing at movie quote DP?

OdettySpaghetti · 08/10/2021 06:34

DP has a habit of saying things as though he’s in a movie. He doesn’t do it jokingly - example:

He was telling me about when he was younger and spent the weekends going to car meets in car parks (boy racers 🙄) and he suddenly stopped talking, shook his head and said “man, that summer was immense” - I burst out laughing and started singing “the summer of 69” - it just sounded so American and movie like!

Another one - I was saying how much I’m missing Thailand (it’s been a while since I’ve travelled, first world problems I know) and he took my hand and stared into my eyes and said “we will get there again, believe me, we’ll make it back” 😂😂 he was being dead serious, I burst out laughing as it just sounded so out of context!

Anyway, last night - we’d gone to the local for something to eat. We were sat in the beer garden, it was lovely and warm. He suddenly stood up, held out his hand and said “walk with me?” 😂😂😂 I almost choked on my bloody drink, he said “what’s funny this time?” So I said “why do you keep talking as though we’re in a movie??” And he looked all embarrassed and laughed and said “I don’t, I just wondered if you fancied a walk!” So I said “so say that then! The movie quotes just make me laugh!”

Fast forward to bed time, he stood up, stretched and said “well, I’m going to hit the hay, tomorrow will be hard on everyone” 😂 I said “why will it??” So he replied “I just mean Fridays are always a ball ache as people just want to fast forward to weekend”. Ffs why the dramatic movie quote?? AIBU to find this so funny and cringey at the same time?

Does he realise he's quoting movies?

ikeepseeingit · 08/10/2021 11:14

Honestly, he sounds really sweet. He was probably trying to be romantic with the 'walk with me?' and the 'man that summer was immense' just sounds like an Americanism, as does 'hit the hay' actually. If he's always done it then this IS part of his personality and I find it quite endearing. Just smile inside at his quirks, we all have them.

Postitmug · 08/10/2021 11:15

He's not quoting movies is he? Sounds pretty normal to me, maybe a bit intense about the travelling, but lots of us feel like our worlds are very small these days.

Can't understand why you find it so funny. Do you never wax lyrical about anything?

LadyOfLittleLeisure · 08/10/2021 11:17

If I had never seen the sea before at the age of 33 I might react like that! Or did I read that wrong?

CounsellorTroi · 08/10/2021 11:20

He sounds cheesy! This would irritate the hell out of me.

knittingaddict · 08/10/2021 11:23
@knittingaddict, there is nothing in the OP's posts to suggest she is 'lacking in words, speech or grammar'. You, on the other hand, calling her 'nasty' for having a giggle at her husband..... Can your own vocabulary not stretch to something more appropriate?
She's not having a giggle at her partner. She is laughing at him and he seems confused by her laughing at him. At no point did the op say that he also found it funny or that they had any interaction about it other than her laughing. I think that is cruel.

If I realised that my way of speaking sometimes made my partner go wtf and come on mn and post about it I would be very hurt. It sounds like something he does without really knowing he does it. We all have our idiosyncracies and it's almost impossible to stop doing them. I can't imagine feeling the way the op does and still carry on with the relationship because being laughed for opening his mouth is going to have a negative impact at some point, if it hasn't already.

knittingaddict · 08/10/2021 11:29

Yes he does a bit, if the op has given us aa accurate picture. However much better to end it and find someone you are more compatible with than ridicule him and put in on the internet. The op's post just doesn't seem to be written out of affection, but out of unkindness and mockery.
Namechangeapologies · 08/10/2021 11:36

if he really is doing it totally subconsciously and not in a tone of irony/banter, it could be some mild form of schizophrenia?

Peanutbuttercupisyum · 08/10/2021 11:36

He’s sounds great!! I’d be laughing all the time!! Im shocked at how many people would be so offended by this stuff!! We laugh at each other’s weird quirks ALL the time!! I constantly laugh at my DHs terrible dress sense for example. I mean if you tease him in public in front if your friends then that’s harsh, but when its just the two of you.. I’m
just imagining all these serious couples taking each other very seriously, laughing only at high brow intelligent political satire and panel shows.

What the hell? Are you serious?
quitecontrary123 · 08/10/2021 11:49

You need to run with it OP! Life can be dull. Just imagine yourself as a glamorous actress when he talks to you like this. I love it.

OdettySpaghetti · 08/10/2021 11:54

He takes the piss out of me all the time! But then I’m not a snowflake 😂

It’s not just what he says, it’s the facial expressions and the mannerisms - example:

Beach in Ibiza - we get there, there are kids playing, people sunbathing, people drinking etc … dp dramatically walks ahead of me and collapses to the ground - stares out to see - takes a deep breath and says “you know … in all my years I’ve never seen the ocean”. He then turns to face me slowly, stares into my eyes and pulls the most movie clip expression ever, I swear it was like the Truman Show.

Same with the “walk with me?” He puts his drink down, stands up, reaches his hand out slowly and says “walk with me?” Whilst pulling the most dramatic expression! It’s bloody funny!! When I laugh he starts laughing too and often says “ok ok” so he knows full well what I’m laughing at! 😂

Soggychip · 08/10/2021 11:57

OdettySpaghetti. I’d not be able to keep a straight face if my DP or anyone else for that matter did this. Unless they were doing it deliberately to get a laugh or be ironic.

OdettySpaghetti · 08/10/2021 11:59

He’s seen the sea as he was brought up in North Shields 😂 never seen the ocean though 😂😂

😂😂😂😂😂 this is honestly one of the best threads, so sweet and funny.

I love a pp suggestion of replying out of context, pleease do this

slashlover · 08/10/2021 12:08

That's a bit different to

I almost choked on my bloody drink, he said “what’s funny this time?” So I said “why do you keep talking as though we’re in a movie??” And he looked all embarrassed and laughed and said “I don’t, I just wondered if you fancied a walk!” So I said “so say that then! minipie · 08/10/2021 12:11

He’s earnest, romantic and a bit intense

You’re irreverent, matter of fact and a bit cynical

Neither of you is right or wrong, but you may be incompatible if you find his traits irritating

I’m like you, had an earnest puppy dog type boyfriend once, it didn’t last…

RavensWig · 08/10/2021 12:14

So sweeeeet.

OP, in solidarity I just asked my DH (yeah yeah I know) to speak to me in movie quotes. He thought for a moment, then romantically grabbed his crotch and said,

"Do you feel lucky, punk."

Yeah, not quite the same.

MelKarnofskyCrane · 08/10/2021 12:17

Oh no I simply could not with this.

MelKarnofskyCrane · 08/10/2021 12:19

It’s like people who say mean, “dry” things because they think they’re in a sitcom

Sounds like you’re living in an old Elvis Presley movie. Has he started singing to/at you yet?
