To have burst out laughing at movie quote DP?

OdettySpaghetti · 08/10/2021 06:34

DP has a habit of saying things as though he’s in a movie. He doesn’t do it jokingly - example:

He was telling me about when he was younger and spent the weekends going to car meets in car parks (boy racers 🙄) and he suddenly stopped talking, shook his head and said “man, that summer was immense” - I burst out laughing and started singing “the summer of 69” - it just sounded so American and movie like!

Another one - I was saying how much I’m missing Thailand (it’s been a while since I’ve travelled, first world problems I know) and he took my hand and stared into my eyes and said “we will get there again, believe me, we’ll make it back” 😂😂 he was being dead serious, I burst out laughing as it just sounded so out of context!

Anyway, last night - we’d gone to the local for something to eat. We were sat in the beer garden, it was lovely and warm. He suddenly stood up, held out his hand and said “walk with me?” 😂😂😂 I almost choked on my bloody drink, he said “what’s funny this time?” So I said “why do you keep talking as though we’re in a movie??” And he looked all embarrassed and laughed and said “I don’t, I just wondered if you fancied a walk!” So I said “so say that then! The movie quotes just make me laugh!”

Fast forward to bed time, he stood up, stretched and said “well, I’m going to hit the hay, tomorrow will be hard on everyone” 😂 I said “why will it??” So he replied “I just mean Fridays are always a ball ache as people just want to fast forward to weekend”. Ffs why the dramatic movie quote?? AIBU to find this so funny and cringey at the same time?

That's really made me laugh! Thank your partner for

Somethingsnappy · 08/10/2021 09:52

@TatianaBis

Ffs he doesn’t have to be ASD 1000s of people talk in clichés, just look at this place:

Sat here in tears
I love the bones of him
Not my circus not my monkeys
Spidey senses
Poor boundaries
Needing space
Pick me dance

Clichés are a different to what is being discussed though......
Branleuse · 08/10/2021 09:55

I think it sounds quite mean to laugh at him. Id dump someone if they kept laughing at me and made me feel self conscious when I spoke

MacMahon · 08/10/2021 09:59

He sounds a bit corny but your response just seems unkind.

lazylinguist · 08/10/2021 09:59

think you should split and go and find yourself someone with no sense of humour.

Ummm... it's the OP who's having a sense of humour about this and the dp who sounds like he's taking himself seriously!

Sat here in tears

Needing space

Those are not remotely the same as the kind of thing the OP is talking about. They are just common, popular expressions. The OP is talking about dramatic statements that sound like they are straight out of a film script. I agree the ASD comment was off though.

OP, do you think he was embarrassed because he secretly does actually do this in purpose to try and sound more cool/interesting?

wtfisgoingon2021 · 08/10/2021 10:02

I actually think that sounds great.
Cringe as well.
But he's really romanising life and that would be lovely to be apart of.

lottiegarbanzo · 08/10/2021 10:08

Pastiche is I think what he's doing, rather than quotes or cliches.

But, not everyone can be as articulate or have such an excellent vocabulary as I have - which, while both tongue in cheek and a cringey thing for me to say - is precisely the point here. He's doing his best with what he has.

Take him or leave him, you are never going to change him. Wink

BoredZelda · 08/10/2021 10:14

But I also think you sound a bit mean and not half as funny as you think you are. I know which one I'd rather spend time with.

Yes, me too.

LadyOfLittleLeisure · 08/10/2021 10:14

@ofwarren

I thought of autistic scripting too!
Same!
Abhannmor · 08/10/2021 10:18

Not unreasonable but he sounds nice. Now you could sort of programme him with better quotes. Or would that be too controlling? Grin

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 08/10/2021 10:20

He does sound lovely so be careful he doesn't get pissed off with you laughing at him or you might find yourself dumped.

CaMePlaitPas · 08/10/2021 10:20

Are you dating my ex? This is exactly the type of thing he would do and it gave me the ick.

TatianaBis · 08/10/2021 10:23

His statements are not particularly dramatic nor do they sound like they’re out of a film. He just talks in clichés rather than expressing himself in his own words.

My list of expressions are popular precisely because so many people talk in clichés and stuff they’ve heard on the telly instead of their own expressions. It’s endemic.

herculesoffline · 08/10/2021 10:24

Autistic scripting Hmm (I know autistic scripted and staged communication is a thing but it doesn't sound like it here)

I mean how do we know what to say anyway? Surely everything we come out with is taken from somewhere/one else?

And it is exactly the same as the clichés above.

TatianaBis · 08/10/2021 10:29

Pastiche is I think what he's doing, rather than quotes or cliches

A cliche is an overused expression due to lack of thought/originality.

He’s talking in banal, unoriginal language that he’s heard from other people (it’s not really snappy enough to be movie dialogue).

Twinsmummy1812 · 08/10/2021 10:30

Wow, I haven’t seen a thread this divided before. Personally I would laugh because I’m not an ‘intensely staring into each other’s eyes whilst making love’ kind of girl. I would either be mortified or laugh. I think that’s okay? If he doesn’t see the funny side perhaps you are not on the same humour wavelength.

I don’t think you’re mean and calling you a bitch is bang out of order and says more about poster than you.

Somethingsnappy · 08/10/2021 10:30

@knittingaddict, there is nothing in the OP's posts to suggest she is 'lacking in words, speech or grammar'. You, on the other hand, calling her 'nasty' for having a giggle at her husband..... Can your own vocabulary not stretch to something more appropriate?

TatianaBis · 08/10/2021 10:34

Surely everything we come out with is taken from somewhere/one else?

To some extent but generally the more intelligent people are, the more original, the more expressive with language, the more they express themselves in their own words not other people’s.

The height of that are the great writers who express themselves memorably and like no-one else.

sashagabadon · 08/10/2021 10:41

Next time he does it you should reply as earnestly as possible “I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her”
See what he says

ohdelay · 08/10/2021 10:41

I think he's scripting as well. My son does this all the time with the exact intonation used in the film.

NursieBernard · 08/10/2021 10:47

So you openly laugh at him and mock him? Poor guy,

yourestandingonmyneck · 08/10/2021 10:48

The "tomorrow will be hard on everyone" cracked me up Grin

Tell me more, please Smile

yourestandingonmyneck · 08/10/2021 10:49

@OdettySpaghetti

It’s not a new thing, he’s done it ever since we got together but it’s definitely getting worse! The first time we went on holiday we went to the beach, he suddenly sat down on the sand, stared out to sea, shook his head and said “you know, in all my 33 years, I’ve never seen the ocean” 😂
GrinGrinGrin

I love him

yourestandingonmyneck · 08/10/2021 10:49

@mrcow

Just get up today and tell him, “I love the smell of toothpaste in the morning”.
😂
peruse · 08/10/2021 10:52

@RavensWig

Aww don't laugh at him he sounds very sweet. Just quote him right back with something out of context.

"Walk with me?"
"Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore."

LOL
