Not a wish list btw.
I'm mid thirties and I think I will see the end of:
Petrol and diesel cars
Cows milk (majority drinking soy/oat)
Pork being eaten by most
Smoking (that's hopeful)
People casually throwing around comments about people's weight
Royal family
Legacy benefits :(
Landline telephones
Desktop computers
A lot of pubs :( :(

Whoops - forgot to add, air conditioning is no good if you have an outside job.

PeapodBurgundy · 08/10/2021 06:17

The ability to live life without a smart phone. I don't have one, and I struggle already. I can't:

-pay for anything online with my debit card,
-re-set my own password at work
-login to the HR system to book any annual leave, check pension etc
-Access the referral I've requested three times in another format from my GP for a medical assessment I need

(And many other things I can only do from home, not the computer at work, because the 2 step authentication is my home number)

I imagine the list will grow!

I have a samsung, much cheaper and does most things

I'm confused - cheaper than what? The poster said they didn't have a smartphone, not an iPhone. Presumably if your Samsung can do most things it is a smartphone?

@Dizzywizz

Why space travel *@PermanentTemporary*? I thought we were all supposed to be going on holiday to space soon!!
Only the very very wealthy...

House phones. I don't know anybody that still uses one.

I do. We don't get a mobile signal where we live!

PeeAche · 08/10/2021 09:09

Within our lifetimes:

The polar ice caps will cease to exist during the summer months. This will probably happen within the next decade.

Areas we once knew as habitable will become uninhabitable. At first it will seem "far away" and a problem that doesn't affect white people. Ie: India. But eventually it will be California, parts of Australia etc.

Meat and milk will still exist but many, many people will switch over to lab cultivated versions of both.

I agree with this and paying tax and insurance for a car to sit unused for a chunk of the day. Also it would solve parking car storage issues if they were banked and flexible. I car share with 3 households but that is city living . I used to have a dog that I paid someone to walk whilst at work once he was departed I now only walk other people’s dogs. It just makes more sense to share things which with texting makes it very possible :-)

Barmychick · 08/10/2021 13:35

Hopefully dickhead leaders like Boris! I'm praying for someone with real intelligence to lead our country not someone who lives in an ivory tower!

Non-populist politics, perhaps?

PeapodBurgundy · 08/10/2021 18:13

@Ddot it's not an expense thing, I just don't like Smart Phones. I would happily pay for a Smart Phone if I actually wanted one.

FWIW I don't like my mobile either, it's only ever on and with me when the DC are at school/in childcare in case something happens, and only the childminder, school DM and OH have the number.

Ddot · 08/10/2021 18:37

Killing animals for meat (hopefully!)
In that case goodbye grass fields that help to balance the environment and much more flooding as these green spaces are concreted over
Strokethefurrywall · 08/10/2021 23:39

Factory farmed meat doesn’t require green fields… because the animals don’t see grass.

I should rephrase my original point to “the end of factory farmed meat…”

Chocolate boxes with individually wrapped chocolates inside.
Cars with manual gears.

Landlines are already officially out in 2025 anyway and new cars with internal combustion engine by 2030.

Insert1x20p · 09/10/2021 02:26

@PeapodBurgundy if your friends don’t have your mobile number how do they contact you? Do they ring the landline?

user6598 · 09/10/2021 07:12

Openreach will need to get their act together, we still only have FTTC at our house, maximum speed 41 Mbps at the cabinet, we get about 35 which is usable but no good if you have a houseful WFH or streaming/gaming, no hope of getting FTTP anytime soon, cabinet space is getting limited and moving home can cause you to lose your spot and end up on ASDL in some areas if no Virgin Media.

If people stop eating meat they aren’t going to pave over all the fields. People will still need to eat plant based food so we still will need land for crops. And a grass field ain’t exactly optimum anyway. Rewilding would be the aim if there was suddenly lots of ‘spare’ land,

That may be the plan but there'll be delays, as there were with the switch from analogue to digital TV.

We are also many years past the "deadline" where the analogue radio would be switched off and everyone would have to buy digital radios.

As deadlines get closer, it becomes apparent that we're not ready to switch, so the deadlines move back and back.

Deadlines are little more than a kick to the vested interests (suppliers, infrastructure etc) to make progress, without deadlines things would be too slow, but they're never cast in stone and there are always alternatives anyway. I.e. you can still buy old fashioned light bulbs and high power vacuum cleaners despite them being banned.

You can't plant crops on hill sides, marshland, etc, and it's not viable on small fields. I'd love to see people try to plant and grow crops on the lake district hills that are home to sheep because they're simply not suitable for anything else (except goats).
