Not a wish list btw.
I'm mid thirties and I think I will see the end of:
Petrol and diesel cars
Cows milk (majority drinking soy/oat)
Pork being eaten by most
Smoking (that's hopeful)
People casually throwing around comments about people's weight
Royal family
Legacy benefits :(
Landline telephones
Desktop computers
A lot of pubs :( :(

@JudgeJ RE: The middle class.

I live in London as see a large void between the haves and have nots, and it seems to be getting wider. You might see what I have called the "have-nots" as middle class by some metrics / standards, however the point of my post is that society is polarising and splitting in a way that is against trends from 30 years ago.

What worries me is that I don't want the UK to be like developing countries where the richer people live in gated communities and move to security protected shopping malls and offices, never really mixing with the 'others'.

I see property ownership being the biggest example of this divide (although know well off people who don't won property so they can use that money to invest - so even that isn't perfect!)

@vickyp0llard I’d be absolutely fascinated to hear how intensive almond farming is better for the environment than drinking milk produced in Britain? Of course taking into consideration soil health, biodiversity and carbon sequestration.

@Rollercoaster1920 DH's mother bought a north London terrace in 1997 with some help from family but on a single modest income. DH and I bought our london flat with a combined income of £70k in our late 20s- i fear we are a dying breed and I think the reason why we didn't move out of london is cos we are Jews and most Jews live in London (DH is a 4th generation Londoner). Certainly I would think most people on middling or even good incomes would not stay in London long term, leaving only the rich, poor and young. Maybe also new immigrants/expats (you move to london by default when you first move to the country as you don't know any other place- that was the case for me) and some ethnic minorities like Jews/Indians who have a close knit family network in London. But the result of this is a very polarized community and most shops either catering to the very rich (designer brands and artisan bakeries) or the very poor (poundland.

@elbea literally every data source says this, animal agriculture is by far worse than any plant agriculture - because animal agriculture also requires a lot of plant agriculture to make animal feed. Whether it's local or not doesn't really come into it.

Disagree about desktop computers - possibly in most workplaces, but I think gamers will always want the addition processing power of a bigger unit.

derxa · 07/10/2021 16:23

@MoreStuffingMatron

Beef and diary farms (replaced by sheep grazing underneath banks of solar panels).
Confused

Almond trees grow in vast acreages in California and use precious water from the mountains so there's little downstream in the south and Mexico

What things do you think will cease existing in your lifetime?
PattiPritell · 07/10/2021 16:27

You can't make yoghurt and cheese from nut milk.

elbea · 07/10/2021 16:35

@vickyp0llard those sources all talk exclusively about carbon emissions and nothing else?

Almond milk production is an unmitigated ecological disaster, but at least carbon emissions are less than cows right.

On the other hand without livestock farming there will be no suitable land left in Britain to farm in 30 years for arable and fresh produce.

Copy and pasting random news articles from the internet isn’t showing you the full picture. Ironically there will probably be no almond milk in our lifetime due to the desertification of the farming land in California. There will be cows milk though.

PattiPritell · 07/10/2021 16:36

The south of Scotland high ground is being swathed in conifer plantations with the highest ground for wind farms. Be careful what you wish for - take away the sheep and cattle , how do you make a profit? Conifers. Landowners want to make money from the land if you don't want farms or pheasant shoots this is what you'll get, images of bluebells and ancient woods are not the way it will go.

Exactly, I can’t imagine a world without cheese, it wouldn’t be a place I would want to live in 🤣

Cows milk? No that’s going to be drunk forever. I know no one who drinks plant based milks. Cash will disappear so will paper birth certs

Graphista · 07/10/2021 17:46

@SomersetDreams I wish! Re tories but they've been around almost 200 years and unfortunately I don't see them going any time soon.

Much of this depends on what age you are now.

Definitely! Why I think i said my age in my post?

I'm 49 so even if I live to a good age that's only another 40/50/60 years

Dd is only 20 so has maybe 80+ years left a lot I think will change in her lifetime, although I'm the "home computer/microchip" generation so I think we had a LOT change already in our lifetime.

@Spiindoctor you're right re power but also the energy companies are doing some work to minimise power outages and keep them as short as possible. But yea when I have a power cut I do tend to panic a bit as it means no wifi etc and as I'm basically housebound I'm VERY dependent on deliveries and being able to order online and also phoning drs/pharmacist etc last power cut was when my Tesco delivery was due and I did get in a bit of a flap I must admit as I was worried about the fridge/freezer items it was ok in the end as the power came back on just as delivery chap was leaving.

Nice people being nice to other people. Frankly, society nowadays baffles me everyone seems intent on being nasty all the time and looking for reasons to be offended. Not talking about myself in particular but what I see and hear really bothers me.
