To be annoyed my mum says I’m a snob for this

It’s relevant to note that I am from a working class background and last year I moved into a flat in an actually “naice” area of the northern town I grew up in. The number of the flat has “A” after it because it was originally the upstairs of a single Edwardian townhouse and the ground floor has the number only.. for example I have 69A and downstairs they have 69.

I thought having the A just looked a bit rubbish and a friend suggested that I could instead give the flat a name and register it with the post office and so on to use it officially. So I went through this rigmarole and my flat is now called something along the lines of Brenda Tower then the road name etc (not exactly that name due to privacy!)

I thought it was quite a fun thing to do but when I told my DM she went berserk and said she was disappointed because she hadn’t brought me up to be so snobby about something like an address and that moving to this part of town has made me into a worse person. I thought she was joking at first but she is really holding me in contempt for it and makes annoying references to how “posh” and “too good” I am at family gatherings and things. Other than having a nice flat in a nice area and giving it my own name, Am I actually being unreasonable?? Lots of people with cottages and things have house names so why can’t my flat?

OP posts:
pelosi · 05/10/2021 20:38

It is a bit Trumpian 🤣

Peoniesandpeaches · 05/10/2021 20:39

It makes me cringe so hard seeing that. It’s very weird naming a flat and not so much snobby but massively pretentious especially calling it ‘towers.’ If you were my daughter I wouldn’t be able to resist taking the piss but I wouldn’t fall out with you for it.

WeAllHaveWings · 05/10/2021 20:41

Naice country or rural houses that dont have street names have house names instead of numbers.

Naming a house in a street is pretens

WormYourHonour · 05/10/2021 20:42

"Towers" for a 2 up 2 down conversion?.
No wonder your mum's taking the piss.

Unless you have a couple towers.. Or it's an unusually tall building, you probably should.have called it something less pretentious?

WeAllHaveWings · 05/10/2021 20:42

sorry hit enter....

Naming a house is pretentious, naming a flat is just hilarious!

bestsoupintown · 05/10/2021 20:43

I don't think it's snobby but it is tacky and a bit weird.

Yesitsbess · 05/10/2021 20:43

Brenda I bloody love that. And I really hope your actual name is Fawlty because that would make it even funnier!

The number is there, jobs a good un.

BitterTits · 05/10/2021 20:43

But OP is taking the piss calling it Brenda Towers. I think it's funny.

Diversion · 05/10/2021 20:44

Name your house as you wish, however living in a house with only a name has caused untold issues for us. All of the houses where I live have (similar) names only and nobody can ever find the right one. We get constant phone calls from delivery drivers, supermarket drivers and I often feel like handing out some kind of reward to those who can find it without having to phone first. I seem to spend half my life rearranging deliveries or standing out on the road looking for a delivery person to flag them down.

category12 · 05/10/2021 20:44

@BrendaBubbles

do you have problems with deliveries or do you just write above number 70 or whatever

I had a sign made up with the name as I’m the only one up the stairs. It’s not a block.

Grin No, really? Seriously?! Grin

Were you doing it ironically?

I could see it as a bit of a laugh.

I think your mum is reacting poorly, but if you've done it non-ironically, it is a bit umm hilarious.

FangsForTheMemory · 05/10/2021 20:45

I think it's fab.

Bombaloorina · 05/10/2021 20:45

For the love of God, Hyacinth - change it back to 69A.

People are laughing at you - and it’s not for being ‘snobby’ - believe me.

Yes, some properties are named - but surely you can see the difference between Chatsworth and 69A Brown Street.

category12 · 05/10/2021 20:45

Oh sorry, re-read and you were doing it as a bit of fun.

RosiePosieDozy · 05/10/2021 20:46

It is strange to name a flat. I wouldn't have done it. 69A is fine and easy to find, it's next to 69.

Your mum definitely has a chip on her shoulder regarding snobbery.

Change it back now.

julieca · 05/10/2021 20:46

They don't have to be nice houses, a remote rural crumbling unsanitary house can have a name. It is simply that it is remote and not on a street with numbers. A large detached house in a street with numbers being named is also naff.
But OP it makes you happy so who cares.
But either your mum feels threatened. Or you are looking down on her and she is reacting to that. None of us can know though which it is.

rainbowmash · 05/10/2021 20:46

I agree that it's extremely silly - names are traditionally for whole buildings, not a flat in a building.

If you've given your flat a pretty name because you want to embrace the silliness and bring a smile to everyone, then go ahead! It's your house and the world needs more individuality and fun.

rwalker · 05/10/2021 20:47

Tacky and screams delusions of grandeur .

Anonymouslyposting · 05/10/2021 20:49

Really pretentious thing to do. I always think people who name their houses are pretty up themselves - even worse with a flat! It just sounds like you’re trying to pretend your property is better than it is. It’s not the same as cottages etc. as they would frequently have had names rather than numbers when they were built so the owner has not decided they are too good for a number…

That said, it’s silly but it’s not the crime of the century. Your mum is being very OTT if she’s actually annoyed about it. I’d laugh at you but don’t see any reason to actually be annoyed by it.

Anonymouslyposting · 05/10/2021 20:50

Oh, and towers for a flat? How many turrets do you have???

julieca · 05/10/2021 20:50

Whole buildings in a street of numbers is just as naff. Except some people seem to think if a house costs a lot that makes it not naff. They are wrong.
Tilltheend99 · 05/10/2021 20:51

I was thinking about this today as personally I think it should go 61 to 61B as it makes more sense to me.

I think your mum is being unreasonable considering you are living in a flat and not a whole house. Is she one of these people that think having an avocado and a costa coffee is decadent?

Blackberrycream · 05/10/2021 20:52

This is reminding me of a very strange garden furniture thread a while ago. Class is such a strange issue here and people get het up about such small issues.

Laiste · 05/10/2021 20:53

I'm afraid i think it looks like a joke. Like someone putting a sign on their typical 1950s/60s council house which says Buckingham Palace, or something. Is it meant to be funny, the [name] Towers?

Your mum? Very dramatic! I imagine she'll calm down.

Yesitsbess · 05/10/2021 20:53

I think the whole point of the joke is that flats don't traditionally have names?

The "pretentious" bit is part of the joke?

Maybe I've missed something.

Tilltheend99 · 05/10/2021 20:54

Now this is snobbery
