Washer dryer argument with DH

Magnoliamarigold · 05/10/2021 09:57

Me: We need a washer dryer, it saves space
DH: There is no such thing as a proper washer dryer, they all dry shit. We need a separate washing machine and a separate dryer. Everyone I know agrees with me.

AIBU?

You are both wrong.

Tumble dryers are a major source of plastic pollution, as well as the obvious environmental/energy issues.

Do without, & dry your clothes by hanging them up.

Your DH is right. But if you only have space for one appliance they have their uses.
I have one so speak from experience!
LG one was dreadful. Can't remember the one before that, but it was better until it broke. Currently have a Haier and it's actually pretty good. Washes well and dries well too. Unless you do a small wash load, you do have to reduce the amount in there before drying but other than that it's proving to be our best one so far.

just fill the drum 3/4s full set it off and 5 hours later out pops clean and dry washing.

5 hours to do 3/4 drum of washing? Nightmare

My thoughts exactly. 44 minutes to do a load of washing and then I load it onto the airer or in the tumble dryer. The next load can then start. In 5 hours, I can do all of our washing and it be drying.

I have two excellent washer/dryers. One in a flat I rent out - no complaints (and no outside space to dry clothes or room fit a separate dryer). I have one that came with the house I've just bought. Work very well and clothes come out perfectly dry. The only reason for separate machines is you obviously can't be washing one load while drying another with one machine, so if you do a lot of laundry, separate machines may be necessary.

woodhill · 05/10/2021 12:16

No your DH is right

Cas112 · 05/10/2021 12:18

Washer/dryers are infamously poo

Gothichouse40 · 05/10/2021 12:23

I agree with your husband. If you have the space buy them separate. The biggest issue with combined washer driers are if one breaks, nothing works. My friend hated hers, got rid of it and went back to separate machines.

Blendabrethin · 05/10/2021 12:34

Yabu.

I have a washer dryer that we paid 800 poumds for 3 years ago. It has had 6 parts changed since we had it. On the rare occasion it's working, it washes and dries well. However, there is no filter for the dryer. When dryer fluff builds up, it goes into the washing machine filter. You have to take off the front of the machine and undo the washing machine filter pipe thingy and flood the blooming floor!

What brands may I ask?

That’s not always possible though. We tumble dry as little as possible but in wet weather, working long hours and with 2 superking beds plus toddler bedding, cloth nappies and clothes we do not have the drying space for everything. We tumble bedding, towels and underwear mostly. The rest is line or airer dried. But I can’t dry enormous bed sets in the house and we do 2-3 loads of laundry every day.

JoborPlay · 05/10/2021 12:58

We've had 2 washer dryers. They are shit compared to separate machines. Particularly if you like to do multiple loads a day - the machine is in use for twice as long as usual.

user1477249785 · 05/10/2021 13:02

He's 100% right

LampLighter414 · 05/10/2021 13:07

2-3 loads a DAY @Megan2018?
HOW? - are you taking in laundry for extra cash?
Do you have a dozen children?

& of course you can dry "enormous bed sets" in the house.
You just drape them over a door.

footiemum3 · 05/10/2021 13:07

Washer driers are generally rubbish. If you have space def get separate.

Billben · 05/10/2021 13:13

I’m also with your DH 😀

LemonKitten · 05/10/2021 13:16

Agree with DH

moreshitandnofuckingredemption · 05/10/2021 13:17

Your DH is right
It kind of depends how much tumble drying you want to do though
If you mostly hang washing, and you just want to be able to dry stuff when it's too cold/wet outside but the heating isn't on yet, then you can probably manage with a washer dryer
But you'd be "managing", it wouldn't be great. At all.
If you're a die-hard tumbler, I wouldn't even consider it

GalaPie · 05/10/2021 13:22

I stayed in a rather posh cottage last week where there was a very bling high tech washer/dryer. Due to the weather and our activities we had washing everyday. I used the 5kg 40 degree wash and dry, it took 4 hours 11 minutes.
It was a good job there was also a top notch heating system in our accommodation as the drying part of the machine was nothing more than a glorified spin dryer, and I needed all the radiators to hang the washing on.

ShuddaBeenMe · 05/10/2021 13:25

DH is to right

I've used loads and they take hours and are shit at drying clothes

FusionChefGeoff · 05/10/2021 13:31

Oh @Magnoliamarigold I really feel for you having to climb down from this Grin

Iwishiwereamillionaire · 05/10/2021 13:31

They’re dreadful!
I’d rather spend a bit more on a higher spinning washing machine eg 1400+ and a heated airer instead… it would definitely workout cheaper to run plus you wouldn’t have to wash OR dry you could do both!

bg21 · 05/10/2021 13:36

DH is right washer dryers are shit lol total waste of money x

MrsClatterbuck · 05/10/2021 13:41

Years ago a guy who came into work who repaired washing machines told me never buy a washer dryer. I don't think they have changed much. We moved recently into a new build and they were going to put in a washer dryer but we declined and brought our old washing machine and separate dryer from our old property. Both still going after 12 and 25 years.
