Washer dryer argument with DH

Magnoliamarigold · 05/10/2021 09:57

Me: We need a washer dryer, it saves space
DH: There is no such thing as a proper washer dryer, they all dry shit. We need a separate washing machine and a separate dryer. Everyone I know agrees with me.

I could easily have a school uniform done within an hour with separates. I don’t personally feel comfortable to have a dryer on when I’m in bed or out of the house.
I don’t disagree that if it’s possible to line dry you should do that instead but putting your heating on to dry washing is hardly an ‘eco’ option and the excess moisture in the house is unhealthy and can cause damage.

borntobequiet · 06/10/2021 09:06

Excess moisture in a house for any reason is not good and can be dealt with by using a dehumidifier, which can also reduce heating bills because it takes energy to heat all that water in the air. I’m often surprised that people don’t realise how damp and humid their houses are and how unwilling they are to address the problem (sometimes even while complaining about condensation and mould).

You should NEVER leave washing machines, tumble dryers on unattended night or otherwise. Do you not remember all the recent recalls! Apart from that,if I have to use the tumble dryer in bad weather,I want the clothes straight out, hung up. Had one washer dryer 4 kids. It was Ok but this was 30 years ago. Everything seems to break down give up a lot quicker now. Separate now.dryer is in the shed. I would go separate. As for space issues, you can get a kit which will put the dryer on top of the washing machine
Ironically, just this week, because my fuel has rocketed per month,no cheap deals,I have bought a heated dryer. I have Economy 7,am all electric. I have a de humidifier with the clothes drying facility.you are correct about damp air, mould, condensation, the UK has high humidity levels anyway, especially in the winter months

nannybeach · 07/10/2021 06:32

I mean I have bought a heated airer.

SpeckyWithTheGoodHair · 07/10/2021 06:38

I'm with your husband. They dry very poorly, and whilst it's drying it can't be washing!

Sumlove · 07/10/2021 06:44

I have a washer dryer, 6 years and still doing a fabulous job. I did lots of research. It's an AEG one. I don't have space for both so had to get one. Just do your research - don't buy a cheap one!

NatalieH2220 · 07/10/2021 06:49

I have a washer dryer and it's fine.. does what it's supposed to.

I've never had a separate dryer though so maybe I don't know what I'm missing 🤷‍♀️

20thCenturyGhosts · 07/10/2021 06:50

I've had both, your DH is right I'm afraid!

Houseofvelour · 07/10/2021 06:50

Your DH is 100% correct.
We had a washer dryer and it was awful. Nothing dried properly and it always came out with a weird burning smell.

xprincessxjanetx · 07/10/2021 20:34

I agree with your DH, I had one once and wouldn't get another.

user1493494961 · 07/10/2021 21:00

We've had a Zanussi washer\dryer for 15 years, it's been brilliant, dries really well.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/10/2021 21:07

@Whycangirlsbesonasty

John Lewis own brand. Paid £800-ish 10 years ago. I pay no attention to how heavy the washing is, just fill the drum 3/4s full set it off and 5 hours later out pops clean and dry washing.
Hoover washing machine (£269) and Indesit dryer (£159 at the time), 2 and 10 years ago.

Wash 1 - 15-45 minutes depending upon type of load, up to 9kg of bedding. Whole load goes into dryer, comes out at exactly the same time as the second (59 minute) long wash for towels/heavily soiled items finishes.

The initial outlay was less, the electricity used is less, the time spent in getting things clean and dry is less.

That's why I have separate ones.

Daphnise · 07/10/2021 21:10

Your DH is right, and it is just not worth it to save space.

Perhaps you might listen to him more!....

Wrenna · 07/10/2021 21:11

Sorry my in-laws had one and it was awful!

catsandhens · 07/10/2021 21:29

If you accept your DH is right you only have to be wrong once, if you get a washer drier and it doesnt dry well, you will be reminded you were wrong on a regular basis. Accept they are shit now Grin

Rosamultiflora · 07/10/2021 21:32

The person who does the washing should have the greatest say in the decision.

Spyro1234 · 07/10/2021 21:36

DH is right. Sorry lol

RVN123 · 07/10/2021 22:08

Have to agree with your DH.
Never had a washer and separate dryer before we moved into our new house last year, which has room for separate ones. When our washer dryer broke down for the umpteenth time we got separate machines and I can't believe the difference. The amount of water collected by the dryer is phenomenal! I can never believe when I empty it just how much water had been sucked out of the clothes, and its so fast and quiet too. It has a huge drum too.
The old machine always took forever and just seemed to make things hot but still wet or damp.

I am a convert to separate washer and dryer now, and I say if you have the room, its far better.

Thevoiceofreason2021 · 07/10/2021 22:28

He is right, they are shite

nocoolnamesleft · 07/10/2021 22:31

Having had both (various rentals without space for separates), I was so glad to be able to go back to separates. Work so much better. Combined don't do either job as well.
