Washer dryer argument with DH

Magnoliamarigold · 05/10/2021 09:57

Me: We need a washer dryer, it saves space
DH: There is no such thing as a proper washer dryer, they all dry shit. We need a separate washing machine and a separate dryer. Everyone I know agrees with me.

AIBU?

Sorry your DH is correct - all washer driers are shit.

MujeresLibres · 05/10/2021 13:51

Not RTFT but your DH is correct. Washer dryers are great if you only use the dryer occasionally, I had one in my tiny flat. But not a patch on a separate dryer. Anyway, everything needs to be taken out and given a good shake between the wash and dry, so I wouldn't advise using the cycles that go straight into drying after washing.

saleorbouy · 05/10/2021 13:54

Most washer dryers will not dry a full washed load well.
I had to empty half the drum out and to two dry cycles for each wash. It defeats the object really as some clothes were on airers on in baskets and it was messy.
I'm with your hubby get two machines eached designed to do the job well.
Plenty of compact laundry room ideas in Pinterest.

Are they really that bad?

Currently have a washer and dry on racks but have no central heating so it is difficult to dry towels, bedding and jeans. No space for a separate dryer. I was thinking a washer dryer would be worth it for bedding, towels and occasional use in wet weather or when we need something dry quickly but this thread is making me think there's no point and I should save my money 🤔

I know they aren't as good but it sounds as though they are worse than I thought!

fumfspos · 05/10/2021 14:23

DH is right. Absolute crap.
I have one. It worked quite well for the first few months but it's total shit now.
It's absolutely great at washing but the drying is just ridiculous. It takes hours and hours to dry anything. Waste of electricity. It also won't dry the whole load of washing you've done anyway so you end up with half of it on a washing line, the other half in the dryer and the stuff out of the dryer is dry faster.
I knew it wouldn't be great but I got one as we previously had one which was shared by all the flats down in the cellar. When that went tits up the others didn't want to pay to replace it as they all have gardens to dry stuff in - so I thought ooo I'll get a washer-dryer and hope that at least I could use it to dry stuff that I needed urgently.
But no... stuff I need urgently now dries on a radiator.

Total and utter load of crap. Don't get one.

2bazookas · 05/10/2021 14:38

He;s right, you aren't.

Kleptaklunky · 05/10/2021 14:43

I'm with your husband we have a washer/dryer and the dryer isn't great

starfishmummy · 05/10/2021 14:46

I think if you are a single person household you might manage. Add in a second person and/or kids then forget it.

Talipesmum · 05/10/2021 14:56

We have a John Lewis washer dryer, 8kg wash / 6kg dry. It’s absolutely great. Of course you can’t tumble a whole load - you need far more space in the drum for tumble drying compared with washing. But it works just fine given we don’t have the space for separates. I’ll wash a full towels load, then fish out the smaller / thinner ones and hang them up, and tumble the rest. I have to put it on the “dry it to the max” setting, but they come out perfect.
If you get one with good reviews from reputable place, it should be fine.
If I had enough space for separates, I’d do that as it’s clearly more convenient. But I don’t, and it’s a totally fine trade off.

Cuck00soup · 05/10/2021 14:57

How much washing do you do?
The machine in your link does a 10 litre wash, but only a 7kg dry.

It's OK for a couple who don't make much washing, but if you have a family you will regret not having a better dryer. Especially if you have the space.

I’d say go for it! I mostly use the drying on ours for towels and bedding and kids / our undies. I would never tumble clothes anyway as even with separates I find it can shrink things and I don’t trust it :-D It absolutely takes the edge off all the towels and sheets everywhere. I pair it with Lakeland heated aired and we’re all good. Family of 4.
Talipesmum · 05/10/2021 15:01

(When I say “takes the edge off” I mean it does dry them v thoroughly, just I can’t tumble the whole load at once so I still have a few things hanging around waiting to dry)

Buttons294749 · 05/10/2021 15:04

Hate our washer / dryer
Wish I could launch it into the sun!

wanttomarryamillionaire · 05/10/2021 15:06

They are absolute shit! Take absolutely ages to dry anything. Had one for 6 months and got rid as soon as I could afford separates.

LondonTTC · 05/10/2021 15:10

Our washer dryer is a necessity due to space and it's great! I use both functions every day and I love it. Game changer

MilduraS · 05/10/2021 15:13

DH is right. Ours could only dry a half load and everything came out badly creased. Ironed shirts used to crumple back into a mess over the course of a day.

With our proper tumble dryer most of the clothes don't need ironing, just shirts and the odd pair of trousers.

Congressdingo · 05/10/2021 15:14

I have recently been in a holiday cottage that only had a washer/dryer.
It was spectacularly shit. I put towels in to wash and dry, only 3 or maybe 4 so it shouldn't have been a problem weight wise.
It took about 5 hours and the towels actually came out hard like cardboard with the imprint of the drum on them. And still a bit damp. I don't even know how it managed to get from soft towels in to damp cardboard towels out?

Couchbettato · 05/10/2021 15:55

I bloody love my Samsung ecobubble washer dryer. 9kg Wash 6kg dry, but I never put more than 6kg in any way.

Had her 7 years and she still gets my clothes dry, warm and clean.

Dagnabit · 05/10/2021 17:28

I agree with your husband - I had one when I lived in my flat; total shite.

bigbeatmanifesto · 05/10/2021 17:51

Washer dryers make everything smell damp
& don't work imo.

LaikO · 05/10/2021 18:09

Our washer dryer is brilliant, but I seem to be in the minority...
