Washer dryer argument with DH

Magnoliamarigold · 05/10/2021 09:57

Me: We need a washer dryer, it saves space
DH: There is no such thing as a proper washer dryer, they all dry shit. We need a separate washing machine and a separate dryer. Everyone I know agrees with me.

AIBU?

@Magnoliamarigold we changed from separate to a washer dryer last year just before lockdown. I wasn’t expecting much but to be honest it dries as well as a separate dryer, if you are drying though you have to remember it’s a normal load not a large load.

RestingPandaFace · 05/10/2021 18:37

Ours is 9kg wash only of 6kg if drying. It’ll dry 3 big bath towels in 90 minutes of a king sized bedding set in 2 hrs which is about the same as our old dryer.

Jaxx · 05/10/2021 18:46

If you have space DH is right.

I don’t have space. Bosch Series 6 is the best I have had so far. Very quiet and does dry clothes.

hangrylady · 05/10/2021 18:47

I have one. It's OK, not terrible but if I had the option to have separate I would. I'm the saddo who gets excited on warm windy days so I can hang the washing out.

chinashopbull · 05/10/2021 18:49

DH is right

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 05/10/2021 18:53

We had a washer dryer once. It was dreadful. Now we have a good washing machine and a dehumidifier in the room where we dry the clothes

Roominmyhouse · 05/10/2021 18:56

I’ve got a Zanussi washer dryer, was here when we bought the house 7 years ago. No space for separates. It’s fine, like previous posters have said it can’t dry as much as it can wash and the drying takes a while but it does what I need it to. Probably not good if you wash loads and loads and can’t wait for the stuff to dry in between loads.

ittakes2 · 05/10/2021 19:02

Gosh no - need separate

Looubylou · 05/10/2021 19:04

We have a hot point, no problems at all, however we don't use it very often - mainly for dog beds/towels. Not slow at all. Our last one was fine as well - that was used more often for uniforms

abbs1 · 05/10/2021 19:07

We have a zannussi washer dryer built in and its fab! Washes and dries really well. I was always sceptical of them but this one works so well.

ImustLearn2Cook · 05/10/2021 22:23

Magnoliamarigold
DH was actually like: Put it to mumsnet and show me.
Now I might have to admit defeat

@Magnoliamarigold Did you admit defeat? What was the verdict?

WhatAShilohPitt · 05/10/2021 22:25

Our Miele one was great. Two separate ones are better though as you can get the second wash load in while the first is drying. That’s what we have now.

BurntO · 05/10/2021 22:26

They are all shit. We’ve had three in 8 years. (All different brands and budgets) Our current washer dryer makes clothes WETTER on the dry cycle. I don’t know how it is possible. Dreading this winter with clothes airers and radiators. If you can fit both, get them separately!!!

Cheeserton · 05/10/2021 22:29

Washer dryers are a nightmare when they break. Go for simple, quality appliances for each job.

olympicsrock · 05/10/2021 22:42

Our washer dryer is great. No issues.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 05/10/2021 22:42

I like ours. Had it three years now.
I can, for example put school uniform in at 8pm and know it will be dry in the morning (indeed, its dry by midnight, but I'm asleep by then!)

If you want to tumble dry everything, it would be rubbish. But its our back up for when we can't line dry.

When we had separate, we still had to half a wash for drying.

Pices · 05/10/2021 22:49

We had one once...never again. It was in a tiny flat and it was so maddening I made DH fetch a dryer off eBay and I put it next to the dinning room table with a table cloth over it. I couldn't stand it even for 6 months.

Bobsyer · 05/10/2021 22:53

The only people I know that like them are single people or couples, so generally doing smaller washes and smaller drying loads.

We have a tiny tumble dryer which is shit in terms of rating but being able to dry sheets and towels when's it's damp out is amazing. Washing machine in the kitchen and tumble shoved into a nook under the stairs.

I'd be very careful running s machine overnight. My next door neighbour had a bad fire doing just that. Fortunately smoke alarm woke them and they only lost their kitchen.

GetMeOut22 · 05/10/2021 22:59

YABU. Washer dryers are shite and generally consume too much energy when drying, they're a terrible choice for the environment usually.

Mistressofnone · 05/10/2021 23:11

I really rated our washer dryer, although the clothes were never quite dry enough to put away, so went on the clothes horse to finish up.
We recently made room for a separate tumble dryer and I will never look back!

No more clothes draped everywhere. Everything comes out so soft and crease free - and dry! Smelling of the softener I used during the wash.

Justgorgeous · 05/10/2021 23:40

They are beyond useless.

Megan2018 · 05/10/2021 23:43

@ChargingBuck

That’s not always possible though. We tumble dry as little as possible but in wet weather, working long hours and with 2 superking beds plus toddler bedding, cloth nappies and clothes we do not have the drying space for everything. We tumble bedding, towels and underwear mostly. The rest is line or airer dried. But I can’t dry enormous bed sets in the house and we do 2-3 loads of laundry every day.

2-3 loads a DAY @Megan2018?
HOW? - are you taking in laundry for extra cash?
Do you have a dozen children?

& of course you can dry "enormous bed sets" in the house.
You just drape them over a door.

I have a toddler in cloth nappies/wipes and a horse. There’s 4 loads of nappies a week, 3 loads of bedding, 1 load of towels, at least 1 load of muddy horse clothes that need washing separately and usually 3 of normal clothes between us all. Then tea towels, cloth wipes, sometimes reusable sanitary towels. In winter we usually have a wool wash for jumpers. Then not every week there’s cat bedding too. It all adds up. DD gets very dirty at nursery and through a lot of clothes each day.

I don’t drape wet washing on doors for days to dry who on earth wants to live like that?! Terribly bad for health and house but would be filthy in minutes once the toddler and kittens have climbed all over it. No thanks.

We line dry as much as possible, but the big stuff is tumbled on wet days.

But we are a 2 EV car family with an eco house, home battery and solar panels so our green credentials outweigh our laundry volume.

4 hours ?? That’s crazy to dry school uniform

TheSoapyFrog · 05/10/2021 23:56

DH is right, they are shit. In our old flat I got rid of mine and bought separates. There was no room so the dryer was in my bedroom. Still better than having a washer dryer.
