Washer dryer argument with DH

Magnoliamarigold · 05/10/2021 09:57

Me: We need a washer dryer, it saves space
DH: There is no such thing as a proper washer dryer, they all dry shit. We need a separate washing machine and a separate dryer. Everyone I know agrees with me.

Hate to admit it, but he's right.
My washer died, so I bought a washer-dryer, and gave away the tumble dryer. Then had to buy another tumble dryer, because the washer-dryer was so shit at drying.

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 05/10/2021 11:15

Your dh is right (sorry!)

magicstar1 · 05/10/2021 11:17

I had one and it took forever to dry. Basically if you put in a full load to wash, you need to take half of it out to dry at a time.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/10/2021 11:18

@Phalarope

We had one in a cupboard in a tiny flat. Not only was it shit, it also got so hot that all the buttons on the duvet cover melted. And yet the duvet cover remained damp.
To be fair, we have a standalone tumble dryer that does that. Indeshit condenser, how I hate thee. Although we only use it in desperation, and line dry most of the year, then the airer, with tumble dryer as a last resort because it makes everything a creased mess, generally ruins clothes and is bad for environment.
SiobhanSharpe · 05/10/2021 11:19

I think many people have unrealistic expectations of washer-dryers -- the drying function is not going to be as good as a stand-alone dryer IME.
BUT if you haven't got room for two separate machines then a good quality washer dryer is perfectly Ok.
I have a 12 year old Miele which washes extremely well and, as i said, the dryer function is perfectly adequate with the proviso that you need to split a wash load in two for drying.
On the plus side, it has a 'smoothing' function which is a short 8-minute drying cycle for almost dry clothes which does what it says. If you take clothes out of the dryer immediately the smoothing function has ended and fold them they won't need ironing at all. (Except cotton shirts. Of course. ☹️)
I know Miele is an expensive brand but they now come with a 10 year guarantee, and, as i say , mine is over 12 years old, bought in 2008. It has had a couple if minor repairs in that time, but overall it's been very good value for money.

DotBall · 05/10/2021 11:19

Separate is better.
Apart from anything else, you can be drying one load while the next is washing. Can do three loads from washed to dry in 4 hrs including the first wash/last dry.

Megan2018 · 05/10/2021 11:21

We have a great AEG one, but it was expensive (over £800). Cheap washer dryers are crap though which is what most people have experienced.

Dixiechickonhols · 05/10/2021 11:23

I’m with DH.

Megan2018 · 05/10/2021 11:23

I don’t split the load in ours either, it’s 9kg wash and 7kg dry technically, but I never pay any attention to the load and everything dries well.

TheWoleb · 05/10/2021 11:23

He is right. They always go wrong, they dont dry as well and they're just a pain in the arse.

Howareyouflower · 05/10/2021 11:24

My Mum bought one once. It was useless at drying, and tied up the machine for hours so she could only do one load. Very frustrating if you don't want to wash lights and darks together.

Maray1967 · 05/10/2021 11:28

Maybe they have improved but I would never have a washer dryer again. Mine didn’t take twice as long but three times as long as it only dried half loads. It took ages to do towels and bedding on wet days. Perhaps fine for a single person but for a family of four in our case it was bad, and I don’t regret using the space for separate machines.

KaptainKaveman · 05/10/2021 11:28

The main issue now is how the OP accepts her dh was right all along but manages to spin it so that she seems to be in the right....Wink.

OP we don't want you to have to listen to your dh mansplaining and pontificating about how he 'knew all along and you should have listened to my superior male knowledge' drone....what are you going to do? Smile

KaptainKaveman · 05/10/2021 11:29

BTW we have no drier at all. We hang on airers polishes halo

Bigeggsinapackoften · 05/10/2021 11:30

I have a new one it’s only a couple of months old. It’s a hot point.

I don’t tumble dry a lot so it’s only there for emergencies and it’s honestly fine.

But there’s only really me here and dd at uni so when she’s home and I have good drying space as
I have a pulley in the utility

MissConductUS · 05/10/2021 11:31

Your DH is correct.

noideawhatusernametochoose · 05/10/2021 11:31

OP I think the best solution is to feign inability to log into MN .

I hate to say it but adding to all the other "yes your DH is right".....
Sorry!

NewlyGranny · 05/10/2021 11:32

For once, somebody's DH is actually right. Shows how fair and balanced we are that we unhesitatingly say so!

The best washer/dryer on earth can still only do one thing or the other at any given time, so if yours is a household that needs successive loads washing, it will double the time laundry chores take and double the time you are looking at basketfuls of dirty laundry sitting around the machine.

If you are a SAHM and enjoy having laundry on your daily schedule, go for it, but buy the best you can afford.
We had a top make one years ago, so out of date info, and used it as seldom as possible in dryer mode and the b©¥π∆¶d thing seized up so it was only a washer anyway.

Marmelace · 05/10/2021 11:32

My mams went up in flames.

JanetheObscure · 05/10/2021 11:34

We have one and it's ok because we only use the dryer part occasionally, for towels and the few times when drying on the line/airer/radiators isn't possible. I use wool dryer balls and those do help.

I wouldn't recommend one if you do a lot of drying, though.

confusedlots · 05/10/2021 11:34

I have a washer dryer because we only have space for one appliance but it works really well, I never get why people moan about them, ours is a Beko if that makes any difference, but wasn't overly expensive, less than £400 I think.

I am looking forward to having space for a separate washer and drier when we move though. But that's really only because I can get through more washing by being able to have a wash on while another load is drying.

melonhead · 05/10/2021 11:34

I have a washer dryer and love it! It's so much easier and once you get used to it is loads less hassle.

Simonjt · 05/10/2021 11:35

@sashh

Can I ask those of you siding with DH, how many of you have used a washer dryer?

It's just that I have had people tell me not to get one but they had not used one.

I had one in my old flat, it was rubbish, the dry cycle could only ‘dry’ 1/5 of a load, it didn’t make things dry enough to iron etc, it was more like a poor spin drier.
wingingit987 · 05/10/2021 11:35

Your husband is right mind takes 4.5 hours to dry half a load! There shit. We're having a tumble dryer put in the garage

PheasantsNest · 05/10/2021 11:35

They are all shit. Don't waste your money and admit defeat.
