No fb for over an hour now, literally just realised how much I am on there, hopefully this helps to let go a bit.

I'd quite like Facebook to go off a cliff never to be seen again, but I'm getting irritated with the lack of WhatsApp I must say. Still not back with me

RedToothBrush · 04/10/2021 23:10

@Evangelo

That's alright. Been wanting to go back to flip phones anyway.

Seriously, this is how much I don't know. I'm not on them but use WhatsApp (when there's something to say, so not a lot). Didn't realise this has happened till I started seeing the posts on MN.

Wonder what's happened? All 3 down at the same time? And so it has begun.

They all run off the same system as owned by the same company and some chipmunk did a live update that broke the lot.

Single point of failure.

Its why you have things like air traffic control and air traffic control back up that run on completely different systems as a safety measure.

FB effectively are doing things on the cheap rather than making sure single point failures can't go across a whole system.

BoredZelda · 04/10/2021 23:11

It takes all of 5 mins to sign up to Skype

Try telling that to my mother.

It may be cheaper from there to here. It is expensive from here to there. A 20 minute call across the Atlantic costs £12.40 with BT.

skahan · 04/10/2021 23:11

@Evangelo

Don't panic people. Do you think I'm here to predict something? Lol

Have no idea what's going on.

So why say 'And so it has begun'

🙄🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

BoredZelda · 04/10/2021 23:12

Goodness, are people actually having to talk to each other?

No, they are on MN, just as you are. 😆

alibongo5 · 04/10/2021 23:14

It's back.

Evangelo · 04/10/2021 23:15

So why say 'And so it has begun'

Really? Are you that frightened?

My little tongue in cheek 'and so it has begun' caused you to worry and wonder what I know? On mumsnet? 🤣

Evangelo · 04/10/2021 23:16

The facepalming should be for you. It's embarrassing that you'd take that comment seriously.🤣🤣

Billandbob · 04/10/2021 23:17

Face twat is working but not WhatsApp

Bizawit · 04/10/2021 23:18

I think Facebook is back?

WhatsApp still not working 😫

Wazzzzzzzup · 04/10/2021 23:19

Well no talking to each other when message services died😂
GrandTheftWalrus · 04/10/2021 23:26

I was more meaning all the posts I saw before it went down it was showing me them again as new.

Surprisingly few people have commented that it's back. On fb I mean.

Well, as I understand it (and I don't claim to be an expert). This particular problem would still have happened even if there were a backup system because the thing that failed would have needed to speak to the backup system but it couldn't have done that because the failure kicked it off the internet. I've no idea about the cheapness or otherwise of FB but Zuckerberg famously says no downtime ever. Given outages are far more rare on FB than anywhere else, you have to conclude that resilience is something they do spend money on and if this could be avoided they'd have done it.

Katyrosebug · 04/10/2021 23:28

Thought I was going mad, trying to send a message to my manager regarding transport tomorrow etc and no forms of communication were going through

BoredZelda · 04/10/2021 23:29

Maybe I'm doing Facebook wrong but mine does this is normal times! Often see "new" messages from 3 days ago.

BoredZelda · 04/10/2021 23:30

Yes, I was pointing out the irony of the luddite-esque comment.

Or alternatively you could have fb, whatsapp and insta on separate systems so when you do an update its only to one at a time rather than the whole lot.

My whole point is they are off the same base. Hence single point of failure.

RedToothBrush · 04/10/2021 23:34

Funniest comment I've read all night.

WhoIsPepeSilva · 04/10/2021 23:34

@Cornettoninja

Grin
Grin excellent!

I've had a conspiracy theorist family member on the phone tonight telling me his version of what's going on - fucking nuts Confused I'm kind of glad because FB was his main source of misinformation and he's mainly just easily frightened.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 04/10/2021 23:35

I blame the Mercury Retrograde.

Our washing machine died today too.

Fourinaroomboredmn · 04/10/2021 23:35

Mine’s back on but not letting me like anything or see notifications properly

catzwhiskas · 04/10/2021 23:36

I just had a fantasy that these channels were taken down so all the porn, the TRAs, the incels, the misogynists, could be removed and blocked for good. However I am now believing in all sorts of conspiracies about the end of civilisation ( ha) as we know it. Etc.

Why though?
RedToothBrush · 04/10/2021 23:38

Cos i know.
